    3. MacNeill of Carskiey was a landowner in Southend in the 18th century, and he kept a journal detailing the various transactions on his estate. The journal was transcribed and published in 1955 by Frank Forbes MacKay, a descendant. The book makes wonderful reading, and copies occasionally turn up on Abebooks, Amazon etc. The full details are: MacNeill of Carskey - His Estate Journal, 1703 - 1743 Frank Forbes MacKay Publ M McDonald, Edinburgh, 1955 To help researchers who might have relatives in the area, I plan to transcribe and post five pages from the book which list all the personal names and locations mentioned in the book. Mr MacKay's reasons for providing such a list are delightfully expressed, and I've extracted them below: "... I am aware of numbers of people now scattered over all the Earth who believe that their forebears come from the Mull of Kintyre. To such, should it meet their eye, this table may be of help in tracing their ancestry." Over the next week or so, I'll post five more messages which give all the details about the names mentioned in the summary. (Unlike last year, when I offered to do look-ups in another historical document, my contribution this year is confined to these posted messages.) Sarah Galbraith

    2. Joy Beaton
    3. Hello: We have ancestors who lived in Blaich, Kilmallie during the 1800's. I'm wondering if some one might be able to help me with information about Blaich, or direct me on where to look. - does Blaich still exist? - where would people be buried? My knowledge and understanding of Scotland's georgraphy is pretty limited, and I will be grateful for any help/assistance. The surname I am interested in is BEATON. - Joy in Canada. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! 1. [ARGYLL] Dugald-Daniel-Donald
    2. jeanc
    3. Dugald is not an alternative to Donald. Sometimes Dan or Daniel is used in place of Donald, particularly in Argyll, but not all Donalds are Daniels!!!! If I were looking for a Donald Cameron, I'd go for all the Donalds first. Sìne

    1. [ARGYLL] Donald and alternative names
    2. MARGARET KIPP
    3. Hi, I think we have two issues here, one is names which really are alternative names, such as John for the Gaelic Iain, or Hugh for Ewan. The other issue related more to official records keeping. Since much of our information is from census returns, we are dependent on what the census taker wrote down. English census takers were dealing with Gaelic speakers. In this day and age, we are also dependent on the ability of transcribers to read the script from the old censuses. I have two children just entering university and I have come to realize that they cannot read cursive handwriting with any ease. Many of my ancestors came to Canada in the 1800's and, while available Scottish censuses show Donald, Canadian censuses show Don'l which seems some time to have been picked up as a short form of Daniel. I would not look for any deep meaning where Donald has been replaced with any other name. Having said that, I am still wondering why my great uncle put his mothers name down as Helen Cameron on his marriage certificate, as opposed to Helen McPhee as she was known legally. Cheers, Margaret in Toronto

    1. [ARGYLL] Cameron's - records
    2. Sorry for the delay in replying to people regarding the Cameron records I put up. As I have had a number of requests off list about the records I will transcribe them and post them to the list. I would have done so sooner, but for christmas getting in the way!! I will do them in the next couple of days. Thanks also to everyone who has emailed me regarding alternatives to Donald when searching ie. Dugald and Daniel etc.. I haven't actually looked at alternatives. I think my best bet is to go to Edinburgh and just search through the death records!! I'm in Sussex, England & a sassanach but my folks & all my rellies are Scot's - gives me a valid excuse to go up there for a holiday rather than just a self indulgent record search!! Hope everyone had a good xmas and here's to a Merry Hogmanay!!! Morag

    3. Thanks, Les. On the website, it discusses the 1901 and 1911 Irish Census. It should be noted that this is a project in cooperation with the National Archives of Canada to put digitized versions of these census online, as was done in the last couple of years with the Canadian census for 1851, 1901, 1906 and 1911. Other Canadian years are coming as well. There are volunteer projects underway to transcribe 1901, 1906 and 1911, and these are largely complete: www.automatedgenealogy.com I suspect that when the Irish census come online, that a similar volunteer effort will be launched. 1. [ARGYLL] A few Records
    2. Have been having a sort out of old records that I have accumulated which are not relevant to me. I thought I might aswell offer up the details of them to the list, though they may not be of any use to anyone - with records being much more widely available. They are death records of Donald CAMERON's and one Sarah CAMERON nee HENDERSON. But do of course name other names. They might as well be of use to someone. If they belong to anyone, let me know and I will transcribe the full details of the entry. There are hopefully no errors in what I've written down. Parish of Strontian Donald Cameron d. 1893; aged 58. Parents: Archibald Cameron & Jean Cameron? Donald Cameron d. 1901, aged 95, Parents: Allan Cameron and Flora Kennedy Donald Cameron d. 1977, aged 83, Parents: Martin Cameron and Mary McMillan Donald Cameron d. 1883, aged 72, Parents: Hugh Cameron and Ann McKenzie Donald Cameron d. 1892, aged 81, Parents: Hugh Cameron and Jessie Cameron? Donald Cameron d.1875, aged 84. Parents: Not Listed Donald Cameron d. 1870, aged 75. Parents: Angus Cameron and Mary McMillan Donald Cameron d. 1885, aged 82. Parents: Duncan Cameron and Catherine McIntosh Parish of Acharacle Donald Cameron d. 1885; aged 91, Parents: John Cameron and Sarah Cameron Parish of Ardnamurchan Sarah Cameron (Henderson) who was married to Hugh Cameron. d. 1855, Parents John Henderson and Catherine MacEarchern. (Being a 1855 record this one contains slightly more info). You may have gathered by this point I was looking for a Donald Cameron! :0> I look him up now and again and these are the records i've accumulated over a period. Still no Joy..... *sigh* Best Wishes Morag P. S Still looking for any children of John Cameron and Sarah McEarchern / McKechnie in the above parishes incl. the ever elusive Donald!
