    1. [ARGYLL] A question of semantics
    2. D & S Tryk
    3. Dear listers, We have a problem defining where an ancestor worked. He worked in several big "hotels" in Oban in the 1880s. Australian rellies assume that's a pub. American rellies assume it's a place to stay overnight. Cosidering that the man in question worked in a Temperance hotel, and was married in the Temperance hotel in Perth, I don't think that a watering hole is the right assumption. But what WAS the difference in Scotland in the nineteenth century? What are the nuances of the term? Can anyone give us a clue? Sheila in Missouri

    3. Hi List The Southend in (Essex) England is properly called Southend-on-Sea. Southend in Argyll is, as it says, at the south end of the Mull of Kintyre : http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=165000&Y=615000&A=Y&Z=5 Regards Les

Do you know what province in Canada they settled in ? ? Would you like me to do some Canadian research on this family ? ? If so, give me whatever Canadian info. you have on them & I'll see what I can find for you. John Shoemaker, Ontario, Canada.

    1. [ARGYLL] A Wee Bit of Genealogy Humour!
    2. Ron & Mary Harris
    3. Hello & Happy New Year! Here is something I got from another rootsweb list. Just picture this ... It is New Year's Eve 1852 and John Smith sits at his desk by candlelight. He dips his quill pen in ink and begins to writes his New Year's resolutions. 1.No man is truly well-educated unless he learns to spell his name at least three different ways within the same document. I resolve to give the appearance of being extremely well-educated in the coming year. 2. I resolve to see to it that all of my children will have the same names that my ancestors have used for six generations in a row. 3. My age is no one's business but my own. I hereby resolve to never list the same age or birth year twice on any document. 4. I resolve to have each of my children baptized in a different church -- either in a different faith or in a different parish. Every third child will not be baptized at all or will be baptized by an itinerant minister who keeps no records. 5. I resolve to move to a new town, new county, or new state at least once every 10 years -- just before those pesky enumerators come around asking silly questions. 6. I will make every attempt to reside in counties and towns where no vital records are maintained or where the courthouse burns down every few years. 7. I resolve to join an obscure religious cult that does not believe in record keeping or in participating in military service. 8. When the tax collector comes to my door, I'll loan him my pen, which has been dipped in rapidly fading blue ink. 9. I resolve that if my beloved wife Mary should die, I will marry another Mary. 10. I resolve not to make a will. Who needs to spend money on a lawyer. 11. I resolve to not clutter up the good farm pasture's with headstones, that will just get broken or fade with time anyway. 12. I resolve to protect my family and friends privacy, by giving false names and places for events. 13. I resolve to never give the correct accounts of miss deeds in the family, so when Uncle Lem shot that guy and was tried for murder, my kids will be told he stole a cow. 14. I resolve to never trim the family cemetery of brush and tangle weed,to keep out any one doing that silly Genealogical work. 15. I resolve to always alternate my kids and wifes first and middle names when the census taker comes around, just to give him practice with his spelling. 16 I resolve to come from Ireland (where there are no records or if there are they can only be examined by visiting the exact village, pleading with the local clergy (who is hostile to anyone not of his belief which of course you are) and/or handing over a fee equal to or exceeding your yearly income for one hour's research which may not find anything.) 17. I resolve that not only shall I NOT die in my country of birth but that nor shall my children (yea verily) unto the sixth generation. 18. I resolve that I shall call my children by odd names which the enumerator shall spell incorrectly. 19. I resolve that I shall be absent on the night of the census. 20. I resolve that if unable to be absent on census night I shall endeavor to be enumerated twice. 21. I resolve that when I die my children/wife are instructed to give the wrong details for my death certificate. 22. I resolve that I and most of my family shall die suddenly just before death certification is brought in, in a parish where easy access to the records ceases the previous year.

    1. Re: [ARGYLL] mc gregors

    3. Hi Luis, Alma & everyone, My great great great grandparents were Hugh MCGREGOR (1802 - 1874) & Mary HOUSTON (1809 - abt. 1890) who married in Balquhidder, Perth in 1832. As far as we can tell, his parents were John MCGREGOR & Janet MCGREGOR & her parents were Peter HOUSTON & Mary Stewart from Trinity Gask, Perth. Hugh & Mary had sons John 1833, James 1834 & Robert 1836 in Balquhidder, then the next 9 children were born starting about 1839 in Argyll. Hugh was overseer at Inverneill & at Taynish - both CAMPBELL owned properties. Even some of the children had CAMPBELL middle names. I think there was a very close, likely family, relationship between my MCGREGORs and the land owning CAMPBELLs. Hugh was likely hand picked to come to Argyll to run these farms. I've not been able to sort out Hugh's siblings back in Balquhidder. There were so many MCGREGORs there at the time, all with the SAME given names! I do know of 1 brother, Duncan MCGREGOR, who at 10 years younger than Hugh would be born about 1812. We only know of Duncan because he came to Argyll with them, but I don't know what became of him. The next generation on, Dugald Cambell MCGREGOR (b. 1849 at Taynish, d. 1929 at Balihourgan) married Margaret MCMILLAN (1862 - 1932) in Govan in 1883 (was just looking at the children's births & it seems Dugald, as informant, didn't know his wedding anniversary - he gave 4 different dates over the years!) The only Kilchrenan MCGREGOR I have in my files is one I gathered by mistake & paid for at scotlandspeople, but kept because I paid for it! lol I have a 1892 birth for a Jessie MCGREGOR d/o Gregor MCGREGOR & Jessie QUINTON??? b. May 5, 1892 at Sonorhan?? Cottage. Many of my MCGREGORs migrated to Govan & Greenock. Mary in Canada

    1. [ARGYLL] McLARTY family research
    2. Jenni Gibson
    3. I am interested in researching my ggg grandparents. JOHN McLARTY was born ca 1812 in Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland. He married AGNES CURRIE (or CURRY) in 1844 in Campbeltown, Argyll. AGNES CURRIE (or CURRY) was born ca 1820 in Argyll. She was the daughter of SAMUEL CURRIE and GRACE unknown. JOHN and AGNES McLarty had a son JOHN CURRIE McLARTY born ca 1844 in Argyll and a daughter ISABELLA McLARTY born ca 1848 in Argyll before coming to Victoria, Australia around 1848/49. I am quite new to genealogy and have recently subscribed to Ancestry.com but have not been able to locate this family on the 1841 Scottish census. Any help at all would be most welcome. Much of the information I have so far has come from the IGI and I realise this may not be entirely accurate. Perhaps there is someone else out there researching this McLARTY family?? Thank you, Jenni Gibson Melbourne, Australia Send instant messages to your online friends http://au.messenger.yahoo.com
