Hello Sumter District list members, I thought that I should let you know that Rootsweb will have some outages in the very near future. You can read the messages that I received today. They are pasted in below. This outage will affect the Sumter, Clarendon, and Lee pages and possibly this list. Any mail sent will not be lost. It will just be held until the servers are back up. Rootsweb is growing in leaps and bounds. Have a super weekend. Cindy Hi all - We'll be moving www.rootsweb.com (and hence usgenweb.org, usgenweb.net, worldgenweb.org, ... ) onto a bigger Internet connection within the next week. Unfortunately, because this requires the coordination of a cast of players which may include RootsWeb, the admins at another site, Pacific Bell, two or more computer components vendors, Federal Express, a locksmith, and our next-door neighbor's mother-in-law, it is virtually impossible to predict exactly when things will happen. But here's what you'll see from outside RootsWeb. Over the course of the next week, the main Web server will be down about 5 times for 30 minutes each as we upgrade various subsystems. And the Web server will be down 1 time for about 3 hours as we shift to the new T1. Ordinarily, we do this kind of work at two in the morning, but because of the coordination problems some of this is probably going to happen dead in the middle of the business day and possibly right in the middle of peak hours (Pac Bell likes evening work. go figure) Anyway, I apologize for a little rockiness during the next week. By next Friday we'll be running a much bigger and faster Web server that has at least two T1 pipes all to itself. The bad news is that we'll be down for about 3 hours dead in the middle of the day today. We expect to go down at about 12:00 noon Pacific, and return to service at about 03:00p Pacific. The mailing lists, the USGenWeb Archives search, and all other parts of RootsWeb will *NOT* be affected by this move. As I mentioned earlier, there will be an additional 5 or so 30-minute downs over the next week as we upgrade the Web server's hardware.
