    3. They were a group of people that lived in the Privateer section...they were not black or white---but from writings by McDonald Furman it seems they were not accepted as whites by they white community....they were nor never had been slaves....where they came from Furman was not able to determine....they did not have a school....they had their own church....(Bethesda---still there) ---According to Furman some went with the men from Privateer to Virginia during the War (1861-65) but were sent home as the soldiers from other states thought they were black.....Furman wrote letters all over the country to determine something about these folks and the Smithsonian took an inerest at one time.....One of the Redbones named Smiling who was a Magistrate at Paxville moved his family to North Carolina as they had a school there that would educate his children.....all this is from my memory without me consulting my file..... Who are the redbones??????Wrote a story for the paper but could not answer that question---so it was not published.....( another name for these folks is "old issues"----don't know where this one comes from????? If any of you all have any information---please contact me at [email protected] -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Wednesday, September 23, 1998 2:13 PM Subject: Re: [SCSUMTER-L] Mapping >What are "Privateer edbones"?
