    3. A few years back (two or three) a gentleman came down from Charlotte and brought an extensive history of the China Family....I can remember part of it....the first person that they were decended from was a man named Norton....he had a plantation that was straddled Turkey Creek on the Eastern side of the city....this land was the China Dairy Farm whne Dr. China was killed by Mrs. China in l924 (25?)....the City shops are there today......Think if you will contact the Sumter County Museum you will find genealogicl charts and pictures of many in the family......there were two China's here....one Dr. A. J. China was doctor and also druggest....on Main Street....(have Post Card of this) and the other was his son Dr. Archie J. China of the famed Sumter murder......Also have picuture of China residence on Main in l901......Musuem Archives is best source for most of this......I rember a black officer named Robert China....he was not the first black officer on the Police force but the second....a man named Burns was first.....I have met Officer China that is currently on force ....he has nice manners and had nice visit with him talking about his Mom and Dad.....Mrs. China helped us get her street (Gates) in the City when I was Mayor and we were trying to bring cities services to the black community in South Sumter......This was not the first annexation in this neighborhood...but was second and it came at a good time to be a plus in our goals......hope all this helps......regards....bubba -----Original Message----- From: Robin Gray <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Monday, June 22, 1998 5:11 PM Subject: Re: [SCSUMTER-L] AFRICAN AMERICAN CHINAS Thanks anyway.
