Mattie was the daughter of Susan Long and Franklin Challis Bonner. Mattie's sister Minnie Elnora Bonner married Henry Dearman. Her brother Homer Lee Bonner died at the age of twelve. James Wesley Stewart and Mattie Laura Bonner lived near the Alabama line in the township of Pensacola, Florida, which is now Escambia County. Six of their children were born there. In 1904, he sought work in Jacksonville, Florida. In 1905 he moved to Cades, South Carolina, where he worked with the Wilson Saw Mill and Logging Company. His family joined him later that same year, coming by train to Cades. They lived in Cades briefly before moving to the John Pressley house, a farm in Williamsburg County, South Carolina, near the communities of Bethel, Springbank, Mouzon, Hebron, and about 12 miles from the county seat of Kingstree. Later, they moved to an adjoining farm known as the Willie McElveen place. In 1912, they bought the nearby 189.5 acre Robert Smith farm. The original home burned about 1930, but a new one was built and stands to this date. In addition to farming, James Wesley Stewart took over the operation of a saw mill and grist mill from Alderman Lumber Company, located on the Arthur Cooper land. The saw mill blew up but he continued to operate the grist mill for several years during the winter months on Saturdays. Formerly Baptists, they joined the Bethel Presbyterian Church and were active members. He served as Elder, taught Sunday School and was Sunday School Superintendent. He was a Woodman of the World and also served as Magistrate for six years. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage in Columbia Hospital on September 28, 1941, while visiting some of his children in Columbia. He was buried in Burgess Cemetery which is near Bethel Church. After his death, Mattie visited among her children but made her home with daughter Effie.
