Judith, This is what Scott says about the Female Institute: "Dr. Marks' Female Institute at Barhamville was in a very flourishing condition and he built, rented and sold houses on the hills around." This was in 1840 and he was talking about how few of the ones he remembered who were still alive in 1884 when he wrote the book.
