MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Nola, There is a good part of one chapter devoted to the Barretts. They were all merchants and very successful ones before the Civil War. Isaac is mentioned in Charleston at the time and Judah and Jacob (his brothers) in Columbia. Mr. Scott (the author) worked for them for awhile. I cannot write it all here but I will type it up and send. it to you if you would like to email me your address . As I said he wrote so wonderfully of things he remembered so well that it is almost a "living history". ------End forward message---------------------------

    1. [SCSUMTER-L] Boatright in Scott book
    2. His mention of members of the Boatright family all have to do with the merchants and homes of Columbia,SC in the 1820's. 1)"Near the middle of the square was a range of mechanics' shops, reaching almost to the corner of Washington Street viz.,John Glover's, coachmaking;Middleton Glaze's,blacksmith; and James Boatright's, cotton gins, the latter toiled unceasingly at his trade until it made him one of the richest men in the place, his gins being in great demand, without competition, as far South and West as Louisiana." 2)This was on Camden Street - "The building was converted into a hotel by John W. Clark, who erected the pillar on which stood the famous bronze horse as a sign. After Clark's time it became the property of James Boatright, and was kept by his daughter, Mrs. Sarah Fleming and her son, James T. Fleming. At the celebration of Washington's birthday in 18-- a party of young men were carousing there till near daylight and on leaving the house ran over old Mr. Boatright, who was an early riser,on the pavement, dislocating the bones of his hip joint and making him a cripple for life. He knew the parties, but refused to tell their names, saying it was merely accidental and he wished no ill feeling toward them from any of his family." 3)"Dr. John H. Boatright, the third son, had for his wife, Miss Mary Freeman, who, after his death, removed to Wilmington, NC. Mr. Boatright and John Glover married sisters of the Faust family, above Columbia." 4) Scott is describing the dwelling places in Columbia in the 1820's "After Colonel Chappell's removal to Mississippi, his place was bought by Dr. John H. Boatright, in whose hands it remained till it was burnt by Sherman's army in 1865. His father was a faithful Revolutionary soldier."

Scott, son of Roxanna Anderson and William Scott. It was published originally in 1884 and chronicles his long life. He was born in Sumterville in 1803 - in 1811 moved to Manchester, then to Camden, then to Columbia. In it he mentions many names and places. I will be happy to do any lookups for a mention of an ancestor. Blanche >>

    1. [SCSUMTER-L] Edwin J. Scott book
    2. Hello, I have heard from so many of you searching for names and I have found very few of them so I will begin listing the names - a few at a time. Mr. Scott moved around so much he talks of places and the history and economy of the areas of Sumterville, Manchester, Camden and Columbia according to his recollections. Some of these are just a fleeting sentence and others are lengthy. The people are mentioned in passing with some very interesting stories accompanying the names! I hope that some of these stories and anecdotes can fall into the hands of descendants who might find them more exciting than just the names and dates that we so often have to settle for in our research. Here are the names beginning with "A" listed in the index of his book: Abbott(family and Henry),Adams(Gen. James H., John, John Quincy, family), Prof.Adamson,J.A.Addison,Agnew(John),Agnew's store,J.Duncan Allen,Amick family,Mrs. Acrum, Anderson (James F.,R.M.,Gen. Richard H., William J.),Bishop James O.Andrew, Warren Andrews,Billy Ann,Mrs. Betty Ann,Arthur (Edward J.,Friday, Gen. Henry,John,Thomas,Arthur family),Asdell,J.A. I will list the "B's" tomorrow. There are many more of them so I will list and not preface with any remarks. Blanche

    1. Re: [SCSUMTER-L] Scott Book (Joseph, John, Joseph, William, Mary Elizabeth)
    2. Jackie, Sorry, I listed all of my Scott's and the only connections I have with them are the Montgomery's and the Cooper's. I am virtually certain that I am related to none of the South Carolina Manning's. My Manning line begins in Mass. and New Jersey in the early 1600's and I can track about 2500 descendants. My grandfather Frederick Claude Manning was a principle in the Sumter Telephone Company in the early 1900's. He married my grandmother Rosa Isabel Cooper from Wisacky in 1910. My uncle Frederick Claude Manning, Jr. and my father Robert Cooper Manning were born in Sumter in 1912 and 1914. The family moved to Chicago in 1916, South Orange, NJ in 1918 and Knoxville, Tenn. in 1930. My grandfather is buried at Brick Church near Mayesville with my grandmother and five generations of my Coopers. Bob

    2. Bob, do you know how you would connect to a Duncan McRae who married Mary Chesnut and Sarah Powell? From Sarah came Powell who married Mary Martha Singleton. How are you related to the Mannings who married into the Richardsons? There were three Richardson governors and three Manning governors, which were all related? Jackie

    1. [SCSUMTER-L] Snowing in Sumter and Palmetto State Roots Volume II
    2. Cynthia Ridgeway Parker
    3. Hello SCSumter List Friends, It's snowing here in Sumter. School is delayed for 2 hours tomorrow, unless it's canceled for the day. (They told us to watch the news reports and listen to the radio.) My 17 year old son is running outside to get more snow so that he can make snow cream. (He just brought me a snowball. and I started telling him about when I was a child we make snow cream. He wanted to know how, and then shot outside to gather a bowl of snow off of the car.) Opps, now he's back with the bowl, needs more sugar. I wanted to let ya'll know that I have 7 and a half pages of Volume II done. It's going to go a lot faster since I will have a laptop for the entire project. (I just go the laptop in early April, or it would have taken another year.) Oh, another item that I just though of. Dee and I will be at the Manning Archives on March 11 to sign books. I hope that I have some left by then. (I have number 54 ready to mail out. Seems like I get about one request per day now. For a while it was 2 and 3. If not, I will get Gamecock Printing, Inc. to do some more. As long as I get him to do it at the end of a month, he's not pushed. (Lots of regular accounts that he prints for the 1st week of each month.) Cindy
