    2. Thanks Kathy for your reply I am from Douglasville, GA, Just west of Atlanta, Ga. I have heard of the Book recently from Mary Fondren, but she wasn't sure if it was available. I do want a copy if I can find it. Mary has been a great help to me. However we are having a hard time connecting our James Holladay bn 1792 spouse Catherine bn abt 1806 to Daniel Holladay bn 1752. We think Catherine is an Ackerman Father Jacob Ackerman from Edgefield, SC. His estate was setttled in 1820- 1826. Maybe you can shed some light on that aspect.? I did find a connection in Montgomery, Ala to Benjamin Hickman Brunson bn 1 15 1807 and Matilda Winnie Brunson bn 3 23 1822 , Her parents are Manning D Brunson bn abt 1793 and Epsey Richardson bn abt 1769 . Any Help would be greatly appreciated. This is My connection Please let me know how you are related. I got this info from Bo Watts page on Family Tree Maker. The address is: http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/w/a/t/Alton-J-Watts/ODT1-001.html I don't think he would mind that I'm telling you this. 3. This is Bo Watts (Alton J. Watts). I'm not a Hodge descendant. I'm descended from Thomas Watts of Kershaw County (1742) Eliza Jane Watts' Parents were Julius B. Watts (Died During Civil war) and Esther Jane Evans. They were my g grand parents. If you are a researcher of Hodges you will find that the Watts, Evans, Hodges, Harringon, nd Buddins married in each family frequently. 3. I would like to share info with you. This is the same family but there is some confusion. I have two John Williams but neither with the date you gave. The John William that is in my line married Julia A. Morris. He died in the war and his only child was Henry Thomas. I would have to look at both our documentation to learn which is right. I would love to add to the file what you have on your line. I don't have much on the later generations and that is what makes it easier for everyone to connect. To see the file I have on line with all my Hodge info just visit my web site http://www.geocities.com/heartland/village/9828 Click on Hodge to go to the page of Hodge links. From there click on ged com file. I am not familiar with Bo Watts. Is he also a Hodge researcher? I have exchanged info with lots of people from Sumter but his name in not familiar. There is also a Hodge list (just like this one for Sumter). I am looking forward to hearing more from you. I am always happy to add another Hodge. Let me know what you have that gives the facts you gave me. I have most of the older Hodge info from the Sumter area. 2. Hi, Betty-- I too am researching the Holladay family. As you probably have already found out, there are a bunch of them in the Sumter area. Please give me more info on which family you are researching. And, are you aware of Alvis Holladay's outstanding book on the Holladays? I came upon it years ago and it has been a tremendous help to me. Alvin has died since publishing his book, but his son continues to sell the book and is also online...he, too, has been a wonderful resource. Incidentally, I am doing my research from California... MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii John, Evidently the Beards were in the confection and bakery business. Mr. Scott first mentions one, Capt. Henry Beard, in his description of businesses in Columbia in the early 1820's, which changed hands in the years following. This is what he writes "Crossing Lady Street,we find on the North a boarding house by James Cammer, from Charleston, which afterwards passed into the hands of George Shiell, and still later was kept as a confectionery and cigar store by Capt. Henry Beard." The second Beard he mentions is Thomas Beard. "Off of Main Street there were no stores that I remember. On the South side of Camden Street, Thomas Beard, the ancestor of the large and respectable family that bear his name, had a baker shop. He attained a great age, and in his last years became quite deaf and partially insane, but, being harmless, was allowed to go at large." In Oct. 1862 the Central Association for Relief of South Carolina Soldiers was formed in Columbia. They supplied the wants of the troops, within their means. Scott mention a few of the ones who worked with this group, including John Beard. "The Rev Mr. Martin and Mr.Leiding superintended the packing and shipping department with the assistance, occasionally of John Beard." They took charge of the goods that were going with the trains to their respective destinations. Mr Scott, when he wrote this book,in 1884, had a remarkable memory for detail and evidently a great love of history. Blanche ------End forward message---------------------------

    1. [SCSUMTER-L] Browns in Scott book.
    2. Claudia, You sound like me...my mother and father both had SC Andersons as ancestors. The only mention of Browns may or may not help but they are interesting anyway. 1) This was in Columbia 1817-1822 "On Main St. next below Barrett's, now Stanleys, stood the jail some distance back from the street. It was kept by John D. (Dictionary) Brown, Deputy Sheriff, a man of strong "contribution" who once made a statement the he had taken a defendant with a casement, but he had broke customary and was lying out in ambition.(He sounds like Casey Stengel or Yogi Berra! this is my observation because I have no idea what he meant) He had a son, a jack-leg Methodist exhorter, and several daughters, one of whom was the wife of Henry McGowen, who still lives here (1884) and another was first married to Passmore, a clerk in Hall's show store: and after his death to Mr. Bauskett of Newberry." The son who was a Methodist preacher was tongue tied and had trouble with his sermons. 2)In Lexington.SC on July, 1852, there was a great "freshet" (a large stream overflowed its bounds) and a Col.Wm. Spencer Brown was washed away when the Greenville Railroad Bridge washed away. His body was found one week later near Columbia. Cheers! Blanche

    1. [SCSUMTER-L] McKenzie in Scott book
    2. Elsie, The only McKenzie mentioned is a James McKenzie family who lived about "ten miles from Camden". Scott was sent to live with them after his mother died in 1815. Blanche
