Blanche, Would you be so kind as to do the Dr. Thomas Cooper and wife reference? Bob Robert Cooper Manning, Jr Atlanta rcmjr@aol.com rmanning@dhr.state.ga.us
Dear Blanche. I almost hate to bother you because you are hearing from so many people. I have a Scott ancestor that I have been able to find nothing on. Her name was Mary Elizabeth Scott and she married either James or William Yarborough from the Old Darlington District. It was possibly late 1850's I think she most probably at one time lived near Sumter, Florence County. Some family members say they think she was from Macon,GA but neither of the Yarborough's mentioned lived in Macon so I think maybe they married in SC, near Lynches River area and then maybe moved to Macon. Would appreciate it if you could help me fill in this missing information in my Yarborough search. Thanks, Kay Yarborough Goff Formerly from Sardis,SC. Now in Lancaster,SC
Does anyone have access to the 1860 Clarendon County Census? I need a look up for John William Hodge. He would be 23 at the time. It is possible that he was still living in the home of his father James D. Hodge. Thanks for any help. Faye
Thank you Kathy I appreciate the info very much I am still trying to knock down a brick wall. Can't find anything on Catherine ackerman and her Father Jacob Ackerman.Catherine bn abt 1806 supposedly married James Holladay bn 1792. Of that union My great Grandfather John Smiley Holladay was bn 1846 , the last son. I know somewhere there is someone with the information that I need. Out of the blue I will receive it. Thanks again Betty
Hi, Betty--- My guess is that you have probably already started hearing from other Sumter, Clarendon Holladays. I will answer you off of rootsweb on my Holladay line, but others may want this info on Dr. Alvis Holladay's book "Holladay Family". His son Robert Holladay has been a tremendous help to me. He has always (like most of the Holladays that I have met on line) been generous with his information and always ready to help (with a great sense of humor.) His E-mail address is Senor@bellsouth.net Kathy Holladay/Howell

Bet, As you can see most of these references are not startling genealogical "finds" but rather stories of how and where our ancestors lived. Both William and Dr. Tom were mentioned in the chapter about early businesses on Main St. in Columbia: "At the corner across Lady Street was then, or soon after, a drug store owned by Dr. Sam Green and kept by Dr. F.W. Green, recently deceased, and still later by Dr. Samuel Percival. Dr. F.W. Green's wife was the daughter of William Briggs, the builder of the Columbia Bridge, and her sister was first married to Hugh McLean and afterwards, to Henry Davis." "On Lady Street, near to Main, was a public house owned by Col. Claiborne Clifton, a club-footed lawyer and Methodist preacher, and kept by Chestine E. Williamson, whose wife had been the widow of Dr. Hendrix, and after Williamson's death married William Hilligas, who soon died, and she then continued the business there, as also at a later period in John O'Hanlon's new hotel and at the corner now kept by Mrs. Wright. Col. Tom Campbell and McNary succeeded Mrs. Hilligas at the corner long after known as Hunt's Hotel, which was carried on for some time by Dr. Thomas Briggs, and then by A.M. Hunt. When burned by Sherman's army in 1865 it was in possession of T.S. Nickerson who soon after opened in the Female College building"
Blanche - thank you in advance for giving us so much of interest to read. To go back to the B list - you had my ggggfather listed and I'm curious - Would you give me the information on Dr. Thomas Briggs - And William Briggs tho I don't know him! Thanks - Bet
There is a campground on the Canal between Lake Marion and Lake Moultry Just cant remember name We just always called it Santee Cooper. Betty
Sorry, there is no mention of the name "Lavender" in the Scott book. Blanche
Hi! There is not much on these names but little blurbs, but might provide a window or amusement for you. Busby was mentioned as Scott travelled to Lexington and on to Dutch Fork. He spoke of the familes living in that area and one family was the Busbys who evidently lived close to a man who had just come from Ireland. On one occasion he was "savagely attacked and disabled for some time by a neighbor's bull, and his constant cry was "Oh, that iver I should come ah the way from ould Ireland to be killed by Busby's bull."' In speaking of the community Scott wrote "At Spring Hill the favorite amusement was throwing long bullets or rolling small cannon balls by hand. The leading families in the neighborhood were the Riveses, Williamsons, Freshleys, Eleazers, Slices, Lindlers, Busbys, and others." The name Baldwin was mentioned in connection with the Exchange Bank in Columbia. Mr. C.H. Baldwin was Receiver for that bank.Mr. Scott, who had a bank, had been robbed and some of the money was recovered (these were bills that Mr. Baldwin had placed in Mr. Scott's bank so they were evidently marked) After the Civil War Scott and Baldwin went into business together and in 2 years had a very good profit and went on to other things I guess. Bryan was only mentioned in the early days in Columbia when Scott listed places of business in Columbia.Mr. R. L. Bryan let his palce of business to Plant's, the booksellers. I posted the Browns yesterday for someone else.. If you didn't receive it let me know. Have a good one!! Blanche
The address that Gloria gave evidently has been changed. I checked it and found that I could get it at www.familytreemaker.com/users/w/a/t/Alton-J-Watts/index.html If this doesn't work someone let me know and I'll redo it. I'm still very low on my learning curve. Bo

Lake Marion would be great. That is great for fishing. That area is close to half way in the middle of everywhere you want to go. Jackie
