Bob, you have asked me questions I can answer only with great detail and documentation of details because they interest you, me, and other GUERRY - REMBERT researchers. Right now, I only have before me the two sources I used in my previous correspondence today on GUERRY-REMBERT, SC and your email questions. At the moment, I am thankful for this limitation since coping with these resources is confusing enough for me as I recover from the flu. First, I can't comment authoritatively on Andre Rembert's first wife Anne BRESSAN (spelling as recorded on p. 8, and in "A", on p. 10 of Rembert & McCall). I hope someone else can help us out. Second, re the date of death of Mary Anne LeGRAND (Rembert McCall, pp. 741, 756). In "Aif" entry on page 741, Rembert & McCall have marriage date of Pierre GUERRY and Mary Ann (sic) LeGRAND as 15 December 1757 (matches marriage date Robert Cooper Manning, Jr cites in his email) and her death date as 3 October 1764. Marriage date of Pierre GUERRY and Judith (REMBERT) CROFT is given as 30 July 1778. Third, in "Aif" entry on page 755, not page 756 as stated in their Index of Names, Rembert & McCall repeat 15 December 1757 marriage date to Mary Ann LeGRAND. Mary Ann LeGRAND's date of death is given as 2 October 1764, not 3 October 1764 as on page 741. The death date of 2 October 1764 for Mary Ann LeGRAND is open for question when we consider Transactions No. 67, 1971 listing of "Children of Peter GUERRY (3) and Mary-Anne LeGRAND on pages 77 and 78. Further verification of the dates of child "James" who may have "died young" may give us clues to death date of Mary Ann LeGRAND. Entries for children are: Magdalen, b. Nov. 23, 1758 (p. 77) Elizabeth b. Nov. 23, 1758 (p. 77) Peter (5) b. Mar. 13, 1760 m. Catherine REMBERT Nov. 12, 1782. Footnote: Peter (6) was son of Andre GUERRY. (p. 77) LeGrand (1) b. Jan. 28, 1761, m. Dec. 4, 1788 Dorothy, daughter of Peter GUERRY (4) (p. 77) James b. Dec. 29, 1766 (p. 78) Anne b. Nov. 11, 1763, m. Manasseh MICHAU, July 4, 1782 (p. 78)" I, Mary Jacques, observe these dates are different from the dates given on p. 94 "Births and Baptisms" of Transactions, No. 76, 1971. Need further verification by primary sources to confirm if these are the same children in both entries. Since Pedigree Tables in this article are "Prepared From Various Sources and Records", possibility exists for variation between sources in dates and spelling of name of the same child, as we know! Also, see below, for Rembert & McCall's listing of names and information on these children. In "Births and Baptisms", transcribed in Transactions, No. 76, 1971, p. 94: "Le Grand, son of Peter and Mary Ann (sic) GUERRY - Planter, born Feb. 6th, 1761, baptized June 28th, 1761" "Peter, son of Peter and Mary Ann (sic) GUERRY - Planter, born March 17th, 1762, baptized May 1st, 1762." "Ann, Daughter of Peter and Mary Ann (sic) GUERRY - Planter, born Sept. 10th, 1764, baptized Nov. 11, 1764." Rembert and McCall's complete listing of Peter GUERRY and Mary Ann LeGRAND's 6 children are: Aifa Mary Magdalen GUERRY b. Nov. 22, 1758; m. James WALKER on Oct. 5, 1786 Aifb Elizabeth GUERRY b. Nov. 22, 1758; d. before Oct. 1, 1780 Aifc Peter GUERRY, II b. March 13, 1760, d. Sept. 1800; m. Catherine REMBERT (Acdd) on Nov. 12, 1782 who was b. Feb. 20, 1761 Aifd LeGrand GUERRY b. Feb. 6, 1761; m. Dorothy GUERRY (Aicab) on Dec 4, 1783 Aife Anne GUERRY b. Sept. 10, 1764; m. July 19, 1782 Manasseh MICHAU Aiff James GUERRY b. died young Note: Peter GUERRY (3) -Mary Anne (sic) LeGRAND are parents of twin girls, Magdalen and Elizabeth, born 23 November 1758 according to Transactions, No. 76, 1971, p. 77. On p. 98 of Transactions, No. 76, 1971, Mary Anne (sic) LeGRAND is also given as first wife of Peter GUERRY, III. Also note, the same Peter GUERRY (3), also known as Peter GUERRY III in his second marriage is listed as father of another set of twins: "Benjamin and Floridia (sic), twin children of Peter and Judith GUERRY, born July 20, 1788, baptized 1788" (Transactions, No. 76, 1971, p. 95, "Birth and Baptisms" Fourth, all of us may be interested in another aspect of "Aif" entry on page 755 of Rembert & McCall's book. Here they note the will of Peter GUERRY (husband of Mary Ann LeGRAND) was probated on 30 April 1784. This Peter GUERRY (husband of Mary Anne LeGRAND and later the husband of Mrs. Judith REMBERT CROFT) also is known as Peter GUERRY III in some references. Fifth, in entry "Aifa", page 755, not page 756 as stated in their Index of Names, Rembert & McCall have Mary Magdalen GUERRY, b. 22 November 1758; married James WALKER on 5 October 1786 (Mary GUERRY's spouse and date of marriage same as Robert Cooper Manning, Jr cites). Rembert & McCall also have entry "Aifb" Elizabeth GUERRY, b. 22 November 1758 and died before 1 October 1780. Sixth, PLEASE CORRECT TYPO in second paragraph of my previous email: Sent Sunday, January 30, 2000 at 11:32 AM; Subject: (SCSUMTER-L) GUERRY-REMBERT connections. Marriage date for Peter GUERRY's second marriage to widow Mrs. Judith REMBERT CROFT should be on 30 July 1778 at Santee, S.C. and NOT the marriage year I gave in second paragraph as 1788. Date I wrote in my Footnotes is correct. This section of my previous email should read: I am researching the following two GUERRY-REMBERT connections: Pierre GUERRY II (b. Does the above information fit with what you're finding? 2) Does anyone have hypotheses, information, or documentation on how Mrs. Judith REMBERT CROFT's birth-family possibly fits into a REMBERT line? 3) Can anyone tell me where I can find the will reportedly probated 30 April 1784 of Peter GUERRY (husband of Mary Ann LeGRAND and Mrs. Judith REMBERT CROFT)? The 30 April 1784 date of probate of will (Will probate date in Rembert & McCall, "Aif", p. 755) is after the birth of Peter's two children by Judith REMBERT CROFT GUERRY-- Samuel in 1779 and Isaac in 1783 -- and before the birth of his twins Benjamin and Floride (sic) in 1788 (birth years of children cited in Transactions, No. 76, 1971, p. 99; birth dates of children with month, day, year in Rembert & McCall, page 767.). 4) What is the significance of 1 October 1780 to be noted as a point for marking time in this family as a "before" date for date of Elizabeth GUERRY? 5) In Burials, transcribed in Transactions, No. 76, 1971, p. 95, is a listing for " Elizabeth Mary Anne GUERRY, an infant child - Died Nov. 12, 1773." Who is she? In conclusion, I am emailing this information as a working document which may be changed by documentation. If you are interested in this line, please read this complex email with great attention to detail. Please let me know of any questions or typo inconsistencies, so I can either make corrections or look at other resources. Additions of (sic) within the text of this email are my own. hi janet - while doing some south carolina THAMES research, i ran across a book by a REMBERT. i remembered seeing that surname on one of my mailing lists and, when i saw your message tonight, thought the book might be of interest to you. it is: Remberts By Way of South Carolina/Sumter, S.C. by Sallie Henrietta Rembert, 1894 - it is item number 189 on a list of books that can be viewed at this site: <ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/roots-l/genealog/genealog.lc-sc> that is an unusual url to me. hope the site address works. if it doesn't, email me back and i'll pull up the page (i bookmarked it) and see if i've gotten it right. julie thames howell, jax, fla. surnames: THAMES and DUDLEY Janet Gardner wrote: > According to a modern day map, can anyone tell me where Sammy Swamp is or > was in 1778. Judith, You are right, Edwin J.Scott's mention of Major James Guignard (his only references were of him) were in connection with Columbia. The first was: "Major James S. Guignard (many years Ordinary and Clerk of the Court) had a large dwelling on the Northwest corner of Bull and Gervais Streets, and owned the entire Square on which he planted an orchard, nursery and vineyard. His progeny, mostly daughters, intermarried with the Gibbeses, Mayrants, and other prominent families. Many of his descendants still survive." The second was: "Robert Waring, another old settler, quit playing backgammon with Major Guignard because the Major laughed as much when losing as when winning a game, and thus deprived the victor of one half of his satisfaction." The third was: "In 1817 Simon Taylor was Sheriff of Richland; James S. Guignard, Clerk and Ordinary; Thomas Hutchinson, Tax Collector; and old Mr. Barillon, the French auctioneer, Crier of the Court, who always added to prescribed formula of "God save the state", at the opening of the term "and the crier, too"." He mentions that when he returned to Columbia from Lexington he went to work in the Commercial Bank as a teller and that James Guignard was one of the Directors. The last reference " At his (Captain Henry Lyons) suggestion an exhibition of fruit was got up in Columbia, over which he presided, and once a week in the summer season a fine collection was exhibited in the hall above Dr. Gibbes' printing office on Washington Street, near Newnham's present paint shop. He and Mayor Guignard had each a square of four acres mostly in trees, Mr. Crawford had two acres and Mrs. Mayrant and myself orchards of considerable size, and we also received contributions from others in town as well as from William Summer of Pomaria, Dr. Kirsh of Chester, Mr. Ventress of Greensboro,NC and from various other places." Blanche: Would you please post any mention of Guignard in the Scott book? I believe that Scott may have encountered them when he arrived in Columbia. Thanks. Judith Reesor Hutchinson
I am trying to find the burial place(s) of my gg-grandparents, Caroline B. Rich and her husband James L. Jones. ( Caroline was a granddaughter of William Richardson and Ann Magdalen Guignard of Bloom Hill Plantation, Sumter District.) Their daughter, my ggrandmother, was Eliza Annette (Jones) Epps (1850-1869), the first wife of William "Billy" Epps. She is buried in the graveyard of Andrews Chapel Methodist Church in what is now Clarendon County. In the 1850 census, Caroline, James L. and several of their children were enumerated in Sumter District. In the 1860 census, they were in Clarendon District (presumably the same home, but the District/County name changed). In the 1870 census, they were enumerated in Friendship Twp., Manning Post Office. Presumably this is the same home or area where they were before. According to some information I got from the Clarendon County Archives, James L. Jones was a Class Leader in the Methodist Church and attended a quarterly meeting of Santee Circuit at Andrews Chapel in March 1864. There is a James H. Jones buried in the Andrews Chapel graveyard, with his CSA record on it. However, it has no dates or family information on it. Eliza had a brother named James H. Jones, and Billy Epps was in the same CSA unit that is inscribed on the James H. Jones grave, so maybe JHJ is Eliza's brother. There is enough space between Eliza's grave and JHJ's grave to have two or three unmarked graves. Where would I write or call to see if there are any church records that would have the information on unmarked graves in this graveyard? Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church is on Santee Circuit. When I first went there, the sign said that a Rev. Leonhardt was the pastor, but the last time I visited the church site, his name was removed and no new pastor was listed. Would the records be in Manning? At a Methodist Church there? Who is the current pastor of Santee Circuit? Does Andrews Chapel have a telephone or mailing address? I couldn't find it on the internet telephone directories. Judith Reesor Hutchinson

Debbi, There is not much on the Hopkins family as such. Scott's reference is to the husband of a Miss Scott in Columbia.SC...don't know whether it is pertinent to your family research but here it is: "Where the post office now stands Ainsley Hall built a large store and dwelling and carried on the most extensive business in cotton and general merchandise in the town. He had been brought from the old country by the Purvises and, after serving them some years as a clerk, set out on his own account. Being a clear-headed and fearless speculator, at the close of the war and afterwards he became immensely rich. Of medium stature but elegantly formed, with the finest complexion I have ever seen, and always neatly dressed, he was the perfect pattern of a gentlemanly English merchant of the olden time. His wife, Miss Hopkins, belonged to one of the aristocratic families in Richland Fork, and the connection secured him the custom and patronage of that wealthy region; but they had no children." This was in Scott's description of Camden, 1811-1817 including the War of 1812: General Blair was the second of Hopkins in his duel with my former school fellow, the elegant and talented Henry G. Nixon, at Augusta where the latter was shot through the heart at the first fire, his second being Governor John Lide Wilson, author of the "Code of Honor," who had himself stood fire in a similar rencontre with a cigar in his mouth." Does anyone have a missing William JORDAN maybe from GA or SC abt 1819? I have a William JORDAN that was a witness to a Bedford Co, TN, deed in 1819. The deed transaction involved my Zachariah JORDAN b in the late 1700s in SC? who married Tabitha STOKES b 1790 in GA. They married in Clarke Co, GA, in 1807 and were in TN by 1811. The only known sons that I have for Zachariah would have been too young to be a witness to a deed. I am assuming William could have been a son by a first marriage or a brother or some other relative. Zachariah is the only JORDAN listed in the 1820 Bedford Co, TN, census. So....what happened to him? Where was he from and where did he go? Thanks for any clues no matter how remote! Sandra

Thanks for your information and concern, Melissa. Would you please expand on your concern to the SCSUMTER-L? What is the nature of: "One major error occurs in the very first generation." As genealogy researchers, we need to know the nature of concerns about Sallie Henrietta Rembert and L. A. "Brooks" McCall. Remberts by way of South Carolina. Charleston, SC: Privately Printed, 1979. Otherwise, the information provided in this book may get entered into people's charts as gospel and not as possiblities to be documented by primary and secondary resources. I haven't had as much experience with the format used in this book as I have with other formats. So, this book can be confusing for me to read, follow, and sort through generations of any one line. Each time I go back through the book, I learn more about how to read, interpret, and use it. Researching in the book is time consuming! References are not a strong suit for this book. I have found at least one error in page references given in the Index of Names -- don't take page references for granted. >From this book, I have learned a lot about possible GUERRY lines and how they may connect with the REMBERT lines. The information here has given me a lot of new possibilities to use to form my own hypotheses, and as a base-line to search for documentation. I certainly would not use this, or any other, book as the only source for documentation. I make mistakes transferring and recording information; I assume I'm not alone in this human condition. I try to find and correct my mistakes and hope I've done this critical piece of work before passing on incorrect data. Does the above information fit with what you're finding? Does anyone have hypotheses, information, or documentation on how Mrs. Judith REMBERT CROFT's birth-family possibly fits into a REMBERT line? I am emailing this information as a working document which may be changed by documentation. Thanks for your interest, any help, and any leads either to primary or secondary sources. Dear Blanche, You seem to be helping everyone. As I have told you before, my Cason Scott (of Swift Creek) had seven sons, all of whom migrated to Mississippi Territory from ca 1810 to ca 1820. So I have collected early Scott documents of Sumter Co. (previously Sumter District.) One of Cason's sons, a Mississippi or Louisiana document reveals, was William Dickson Scott. In shuffling through some papers (long past filing time, of course) I discovered I had a copy from a film of a deed of William Scott and his wife Rozanna dated 1806. I don't recall which deed book but the pages are 176-177. It is taken from LDS film 0355678. It is not as good as one you could get from the courthouse. But if you do not have it and would like this copy, e-mail me privately. E.W.Wallace hdanw@aol.com
Hello List Members, Some of that snow is still on the ground. I have never seen snow stick around so long here in Sumter, unless I count the year that I was senior in high school and there was the freak snowstorm of 24 inches. They were rescuing folks from cars trapped on I-95 that year. All of Sumter's and Clarendon's motel and hotel rooms were filled with snowbound travelers. We have ice today. Same storm that gave Atlanta the ice to mess up the Super Bowl travel. I wanted to let you know about some new items on line on the websites that I tend to. I've worked a bit while being housebound. I also have redone the look of the Lee County site entry point. Clarendon is next. Here are links to the new or changed pages. http://www.rootsweb.com/~scsumter/afamconf.html Sumter, Clarendon, and Lee County African American Confederate Pensioners http://www.rootsweb.com/~scsumter/documents.html Sumter County Documents (Thank Zane Perry. He has sent me two transcribed deeds just recently.) Next to work on are some postcards that were sent the other day. I will get busy on that and place them on the photo album page. Check there later on today. Hopefully, I will have them up. Cindy
I have had Rembert info in my computer for years; could you clarify the major error for us "Sumter List" watchers? Thanks so much! Ervin & Betty Shaw poptop@usit.net Lexington, S. As Mary Guerry's marriage to James Walker (1765-1815) was 5 Oct 1786 (15 years old), I suppose the birth date I have could be in error. I also have Peter Guerry's marriage to Mary Ann LeGrand as 15 Dec 1757. I am sorry, but I cannot reference these for you at this time. This information is from a pedigree sheet copied for my mother by my grandmother Rosa Isabel Cooper (Manning) in 1943 from her personal research, and I do not have her original material with me at the present time. I am offering these tidbits as "information to be checked". Can you or anyone on the list comment authoritatively on Andre Rembert's first wife Anne Bressan? My grandmother's u's and n's are identical in her loopy script, but on one page she prints this out as "Bresseau" Bob Robert Cooper Manning, Jr Atlanta rcmjr@aol.com rmanning@dhr.state.ga.us
