    3. Jackie, Wanted to know if the 4 Brunson's might be listed as children of Brunson's old enough to be their parents. The James Brunson that you mentioned in one of your e-mails today shows married Elizabeth (?) Cantey. Cantey is correct and they named a son James Cantey Brunson, he was in St. Peters Parish, Beaufort District from about 1800 to 1820 (my dates could be incomplete). He had several children, his wife died and he moved to FL (Columbia Co., I think) and married Sarah Ann Smart, believed to be daughter of Moses Smart as they lived close to gather in SC and FL. The reason I know this is because I corresponded with Vince Bronson, a descendant of James C. Brunson (who changed his name to Bronson) when he moved to FL. Isaac and Amos Brunson were sons of James C. by first marriage and both went to Decatur Co. GA. My great grandfather was Hampton Brunson and we have searched for years for the parent of these Brunson's. 1. [SCSUMTER-L] Jenkins, Deas, Green, Miller in Scott book
    2. There is mention of the Greens, Deas, Miller and Jenkins. Jenkins: " The school house, built of logs, had a stand at the Eastern end, that served for a pulpit whenever a stray Methodist preacher happened to call and hold divine service, which was done by at least one of them in my time, who dwclared that he was not ashamed to be called "old Bawling Jenkins" He was widely known as a zealous Christian, had been a faithful soldier in the Revolutionary War, and bore an excellent character in every respect, which together caused him to be elected doorkeeper of the Senate in his extreme old age." 1865: "Returning from Winchester by way of Staunton, I arrived at Culpepper Court House in a furious snow storm. There Gen. Kershaw, Gen. Jenkins and Gen. Anderson furnished me such information as I desired." This, during the burning of Columbia: "Left them to get a guard for the place, and meeting Mr. Dovilliers, heard that Major Jenkins at Nickerson's Hotel, was Provost Marshal for placing guards........After waiting till near night I got speech of Maj. Jenkins and stated conditions of things at the bank-females occupying the rooms overhead and vaults from floor to ceiling filled with valuable property of private citizens - begging him to send guards for their protection. he replied "I cannot undertake to protect private property." Deas - Camden 1811-1817: "The leading citizens were the Canteys, Chestnuts, McCraes, Kershaws, Langs, Deases, Nixons, Abbotts, Douglasses, Dobys, Carters,Reynolds, Whitakers, Blandings, Boykins, Kennedys, Warrens and others." I will finish with the Greens and Millers tomorrow. Blanche

    2. Also Lonne, I just saw where you spelled Elizabeth's last name as Caney. It is Cantey. I would guess that you know that and that you spelled it wrong by mistake. Jackie

    1. Re: [SCSUMTER-L] "S" in Scott book
    2. Lonne, that is not the correct Elizabeth. Your Elizabeth is the daughter of John Cantey and his first wife "unknown". The other Elizabeth is the daughter of Josiah and Susanna Cantey. Josiah is the son of William. William is the child of John and his second wife Ann. You can see Elizabeth who married Elmes on http://Singleton Family.org/ You can also see Elizabeth in the Cantey line but there is something wrong with that line. I will try and fix it but it will be a while before it gets corrected on the web pages. Jackie

    1. Re: [SCSUMTER-L] "S" in Scott book
    2. Marie, I think that I understand. According to this book, and I have found many errors and incomplete information says that James Brunson (b. 1716), son of Isaac I and Margaret Brunson, m. Elizabeth Cantey (?). They did have a James but it just says D.1 James, Jr. (was said to have 100 acres on Black River at one time). He possibly had more, since most of the early Brunson settlers had much land. D.2 Isaac Brunson m. Suzannah (?) D. 3 Peter Edhea Brunson (d. 1836) m. Helena_______ which we have decided should be Winnifred. Cantey is such a good name for this area. I have another book called Kershaw County Cousins by Charlotte Boykin Salmond Brunson On page 125 It says, "The children of Josiah and Susanna Cantey were: Elizabeth Cantey married James Brunson, etc. " It gives no further information on Elizabeth Cantey and James Brunson. Josiah Cantey's parents are William Cantey of Craven, second son of John Cantey and Ann, and Arabella Oldys, dauther of Joseph Oldys. William and Arabella married before 1703. William died in 1729. Also Josiah, born before 1708 married first Elizabeth Boswood and second, Susannah___________. John's parents are George Cantey and Martha Cantey. George was the son of Teige and Elizabeth Cantey. You could go to http://SingletonFamily.org/ and look at the Cantey line. However, I just realized that there is a generation off. I would change it so you could get the real thing but I have to mail it to my son first. He has to make the change on the web page and then do whatever else he has to do to get it on the web. I don't know when that will be. I will try to get it straight tomorrow on my computer however. If you want to ask questions I will try to answer them. Jackie

    1. [SCSUMTER-L] South Carolina Female Collegiate Institution
    2. Judith, This is what Scott says about the Female Institute: "Dr. Marks' Female Institute at Barhamville was in a very flourishing condition and he built, rented and sold houses on the hills around." This was in 1840 and he was talking about how few of the ones he remembered who were still alive in 1884 when he wrote the book. Of them all he wrote: "How truly may I say while walking our streets----- When I remember all the friends so linked together I've seen around me fall like leaves in wintry weather I feel like one who treads alone Some banquet hall deserted. 2. J.C.R. Hutchinson
    3. Lonne: >From the 1860 census of Clarendon District I found the family of Charles Manning Richardson and Mary Ann Mercer: Their Children: Dorcas (female, 1847-1926) who m. a Mr. Connors Randolph, b. c 1849 Richard, b. c 1852 Patty, b. c 1852 James, b. c 1854 Charles, b. c 1857 Ann L.E., b. c 1859 The family apparently were Baptists, for Charles is buried at Calvary Bapt. Cemetery near Paxville (p. 576 of Sumter County Cemetery Book # 2, Clarendon County) and Mary Ann and Dorcas are buried at the Baptist Cemetery at Taw Taw Swamp, Summerton (p. 576 of same book). I have not followed this Richardson family, since they are not "my" Richardsons, who are the descendants of William Richardson and Ann Magdalen Guignard of Bloom Hill Plantation. There are lots of lawyers and doctors in my Richardson family, but only one Governor that I have seen, who actually was married to a Richardson and was not himself a Richardson (Thank goodness! His tenure as Governor was full of scandal, and his wife eventually divorced him.). Hope this helps. Judith Reesor Hutchinson

    1. Re: [SCSUMTER-L] "S" in Scott book
    2. Peter is D.3 on page 54 of The Brunsons of South Carolina. His parents are James Brunson (b1716), son of Isaac I and Margaret ????????, m. to Elizabeth Cantey (?). I guess the question mark means her last name is unknown. James is C.3 on page 54. James parents are Isaac Brownson (1672-1739), second son of John and Hannah Brownson, was born in Weatherfield, Conn., in 1672. He first married Thankful Dibble while he was still living in Connecticut and they were said to have had two sons--Samuel and Joseph. He then came to South Carolina where he remained for some time, imporving his land and building a house. When he returned to Connecticut, he divorced his wife and married Margaret (whose last name is not known). Isaac is B.3 on page 9. John Brownson, born in Connecticut in 1645, was married to Hannah Scott (b. 1651), daughter of Edmund and Hannah Bird Scott. John is A.1 on page 7. That's all the further that the book goes back. I have other information but it isn't in the computer yet and there's way to much to get into right now. Jackie
