    2. Hello to all from Myrtle Beach, SC! Even though we are quite close to Sumter and have family there, I was very happy to see this list! Thanks to everyone who makes this possible! I have been researching my PRINGLES from Sumter District, SC, for more than 25 yrs., but continue to have trouble with some of the earliest ones. It is difficult to find people who are searching PRINGLES from Sumter. I do have a lot of info on the PRINGLES from the Mayesville area. Most of ours are buried at the Concord Presbyterian Church on the Brewington Road. I will gladly share any info that I have. Now for my dilemma! William PRINGLE had a will probated in Sumter, 1820. He was married to Elizabeth MCCOY, dau of Elijah MCOY. According to an old family Bible, William PRINGLE was the son of William PRINGLE who married Mary MCCOY, dau of Elijah. (I think these must have been daus. of Elijah, Sr. and Elijah, Jr. - making them aunt and neice.) I have a copy of William's (which one?) pension request as a soldier of the Revolutionary War. In it, he names John PRINGLE as his father. It also seems that they may have lived the Old Kershaw District before the Sumter District. I need proof as to the above or other info to disprove it. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Looking forward to hearing from PRINGLE searchers! Keep Looking UP! Best regards, Dolores PRINGLE Myrtle Beach, SC Also searching in Sumter and surrounding counties for: CHANDLER, MAYES, EPPS, BROWN, PLAYER, KENNEDY, MACKENZIE, MCCLAM, MCCOY

    3. News from Sumter: Hello everyone, I have had a busy weekend again. Last night I attended the grand opening celebration of the Clarendon County Archives and History Center. (I took my umbrella, so the rain held off.) Windy Corbett, archivist for the county did a wonderful job of organizing the event. (Windy and I are both in the same UDC Chapter.) There was a candlelight tour of the grounds with scenes from Clarendon County's past around every corner. There was a revolutionary war era scene, a Civil War hospital scene, an after Potter's Raid scene, a scary ghost of John Henry scene, and a modern scene of the authoress, Peggy Parish, writer of the famous Amelia Bedelia children's books. (We have everyone of her books in the attic. My children loved them when they were little and were thrilled that the author was from Manning. They even met her once at the Sumter County Library, years ago.) Anyway, the entire evening was wonderful. I had a fantastic time. Windy is great. Then today is the Oktoberfest, Southern Style here in Sumter at Dillon Park. My husband and I were there today when it opened at 11:00. We toured the exhibits, listened to a Blue Grass Band and a Christian Rock and Roll Band. Then we bought 2 Bar B Que taste off tickets and a blooming onion. Each ticket is $5 and entitles you to 5 minature B B Q sandwiches from any one or more of the many BBQ booths set up. (They really packed those little rolls with meat. All of the BBQ people had participated in the cook off and were from all over the state.) I managed to eat two sandwiches. Bruce ate 5 and we brought 3 home for Sean. Sean was already eating the lunch that he had cooked (soup and sandwich) and only ate one the the sandwiches. Bruce ate the other two. I don't know where he put them. That man loves his BBQ. All of the BBQ was good. All of it tasted differently. It was great fun. Right now, Bruce is over at the tennis courts at Palmetto Park participating in the Oktoberfest, Southern Style tennis tournament. (Running off all of those BBQ sandwiches.) Windy Corbett is out at the festival with her hoop dress on with her cart of Confederate souvineirs. (She and her husband participate in reinactments and he made this neat cart for her which is rather like a flower cart.) I took her picture and asked her if I can put it on the Archives web page. She said sure. I hope that it turns out. It was almost getting ready to rain this morning when we were out there. Ok, I am getting to long. Check the reference pages for new items. Robin Langley offered to have her reference books listed and she has a lot of them that some of you may be interested in. She recently had me list her surnames on the pages, and she is kin to a lot of you. Love from Sumter, Cindy P.S. Sometimes some of you ask how can you help. If you are able to, send a donation (money and or papers/books etc.) to the Clarendon County Archives and History Center. They are just getting started and have lots of bookshelf space. If you would like to "adopt" a census, just send a donation of $34. Let them know that you found out about their grand opening from web page and this list. Windy was so excited to get a web page. She has made me feel really useful in doing one for the Archives. When folks let her know that they are seeing it, she will be tickled to death. P.S. #2 I haven't really proofed the update on the archives page yet but I have some new stuff there. I know that I have some typos. I will get them fixed. I also need to put something on about the donations and the census adoptions. I love it when ya'll point out typos to me. I really, really do. It saves me tons of time. ;) Hint, hint, hint.

    1. GEORGE SCOTT/MARTHA GIBSON/SPRY DESCENDANTS?
    2. CALDWELL
    3. Looking for information on family and ancestry of GEORGE SCOTT and MARTHA GIBSON who may have married in the Sumter District in 1808. They also could have married in another SC area. Their first child was named MEHETIBLE SCOTT. Was there a connection between them and MEHETIBLE SPRY (dau of Phineas Spry and Mary Huggins) who married ROBERT GIBSON in the Sumter area about 1750. Robert Gibson was dead by 1769 when James Gibson and Sarah Gibson his children administered his estate. Another son was Phineas Gibson. Could Martha Gibson who married George Scott have been a daughter or granddaughter of James Gibson (son of Robert Gibson and Mehetible Spry). I am also interested in contacting others who have Spry, MacGregor, Murrill, Huggins, Gibson, and Chandler.

    3. Yesterday was the state society meeting here in Sumter. I went and had a lovely time. The former mayor of Sumter, Mayor Bubba was the first speaker. As always, he had the audience smiling and chuckling right away. Brent Holcomb was there with a load of his books for sale. I didn't purchase any because our local society was getting some for the archives. I did buy a book that our local society brought in from the Sumter County Museum. The Museum has a few of Sumter District by Janie Reville left. They are only $5. They are quite small but well worth the $5. The reason for the price cut is that they are left overs from when Hurricane Hugo struck Sumter (it was very bad here, Charleston got the press but that hurricane picked it's speed back up over Lake Marion and just about swept Clarendon and Sumter Counties away too back in 1989). Anyway, they are nice little books and the only damage that can be seen is the paper cover which can just be removed. They do smell of the damp but for $5 they can't be beat. The museum address and phone number: Williams Brice House and Gardens 122 N. Washington St.P.O. Box 1456 Sumter, S.C. 29150 803-775-0908 I don't know how many they have left or what the shipping would be but they are a deal. Alan Thigpen of the Sumter Society spoke next. He has just completed a book about the Battle of Dingle's Mill. (See Sumter County History page on the Sumter page for a little about it) We can't wait for his book to come out. If he had had it from the printers yesterday he could have sold a good many. His book will be ready by the first of the year. (He wished for before Christmas but....) Then the main speaker spoke. She wrote a book about Julia Mood Peterkin. We were all just fascinated. (She had slides of old photos too.) Julia Peterkin was from Sumter. Her father was a Dr. and operated the Mood Infirmary (sort of a hospital). Her grandfather was Presbyterian minister. She married and moved over to Calhoun County. At the age of about 40 she became a writer. She won a Pulitzer Prize for one of her novels. She was the first woman to do so. They changed the rules so that a woman could receive the prize. (This was in the roaring twenties.) She wrote of plantation life in the South after the Civil War. She set her books in an imaginary plantation. The setting was really where Brook Green Gardens in Georgetown County is now. The Univeristy of Georgia Press is going to republish some of her work. (The last time any were in print was in the 1960s. She died in 1961). What amazed all of us is that we had never heard of Julia Peterkin and she was from Sumter. The lady who wrote the book is from Arkansas. She holds a Ph.D. in Southern Literature and teaches at Trident Tech in Charleston County. It took her 10 years to write the book. Anyway, it was just so interesting, that I had to share it. Maybe some of her books are in libraries. I will be checking the Sumter Library. I did buy the book about Julia Peterkin's life. I read the preface today. I am already hooked. Take care, Cindy

    3. Hell'o fellow researchers. I have come to beg and I am not ashamed to do so. After 18yrs. of researching I have a favor to ask, and I don't even know if this can be done, so here goes... Can someone that has a South Carolina Marriage CD please check for all JACKSON marriages in every county ? All I know for sure is my Mr. Jackson (don't have first name) married a lady named HANNAH ? @ 1820-1822. I believe his first name is Charles, but I could be wrong. This has been the bane of my existence for the last 18 yrs. off and on, but thanks to computer and CD's maybe something can get accomplished. I know there has to be a kind soul there in S. Carolina that will take mercy on me. Thanks for your time. Kay in Texas
