Hello, I am Deborah Byrd I am looking for information on the family of Hannah Scott wife of Redden Byrd b. abt 1776 in Sumter dist. died 1856 in Darlington Dist. the son of George Byrd and wife Sarah. Hannah was born in 1802 possibly in Wayne or Bladen Counties NC. She died 1864 in Darlington District. Her parents were suppposedly Elizabeth Ritter and Andrew Scott. According to Elizabeth's obituary she was the daughter of Moses Ritter and Hannah Bradbury of Wayne and Bladen Counties NC. Elizabeth was born in 1760 and moved to Sumter county in 1821 and died in Autauga county AL in 1847/8. Thanks for any help you can give. Deborah Byrd
I am searching for the parents of Mary FELDER (b. 1833) of Clarendon County who married Charles Christopher THAMES, Jr. My records indicate her parents were Joseph M. & Margaret FELDER. Having not found a single Joseph FELDER in SC before 1900, I have a "hunch" that Mary's parents might have been Josiah FELDER and Margaret GAYLE. Any information on the families of Josiah FELDER (born 1808) and Margaret GAYLE would be greatly appreciated. Josiah FELDER's parents were John FELDER and Margaret WILLIAMS. My hope is that a GAYLE or WILLIAMS researcher might have dates and spouse for the Mary FELDER that was the daughter of Josiah FELDER & Margaret GAYLE and grandaughter of John FELDER & Margaret WILLIAMS. Thanks, Bill McIntosh
Hello Sumter District list members, I thought that I should let you know that Rootsweb will have some outages in the very near future. You can read the messages that I received today. They are pasted in below. This outage will affect the Sumter, Clarendon, and Lee pages and possibly this list. Any mail sent will not be lost. It will just be held until the servers are back up. Rootsweb is growing in leaps and bounds. Have a super weekend. Cindy Hi all - We'll be moving www.rootsweb.com (and hence usgenweb.org, usgenweb.net, worldgenweb.org, ... ) onto a bigger Internet connection within the next week. Unfortunately, because this requires the coordination of a cast of players which may include RootsWeb, the admins at another site, Pacific Bell, two or more computer components vendors, Federal Express, a locksmith, and our next-door neighbor's mother-in-law, it is virtually impossible to predict exactly when things will happen. But here's what you'll see from outside RootsWeb. Over the course of the next week, the main Web server will be down about 5 times for 30 minutes each as we upgrade various subsystems. And the Web server will be down 1 time for about 3 hours as we shift to the new T1. Ordinarily, we do this kind of work at two in the morning, but because of the coordination problems some of this is probably going to happen dead in the middle of the business day and possibly right in the middle of peak hours (Pac Bell likes evening work. go figure) Anyway, I apologize for a little rockiness during the next week. By next Friday we'll be running a much bigger and faster Web server that has at least two T1 pipes all to itself. Cheers, B. -- Dr. Brian Leverich Co-moderator, soc.genealogy.methods/GENMTD-L RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative http://www.rootsweb.com/ P.O. Box 6798, Frazier Park, CA 93222-6798 [email protected] ______________________________ Hi all - The stars just aligned properly, and we're going to be able to move www.rootsweb.com www.usgenweb.org www.usgenweb.net www.worldgenweb.org onto their own load-balanced pair of T1s this afternoon. The bad news is that we'll be down for about 3 hours dead in the middle of the day today. We expect to go down at about 12:00 noon Pacific, and return to service at about 03:00p Pacific. The mailing lists, the USGenWeb Archives search, and all other parts of RootsWeb will *NOT* be affected by this move. As I mentioned earlier, there will be an additional 5 or so 30-minute downs over the next week as we upgrade the Web server's hardware. I thought that some of you might be interested in my granduncle Joe. E. Richburg's obituary from the local paper. I know that many of you keep up with all of the Richburg descendants. Happy New Year, I hope that everyone is having a wonderful new year. School starts back tomorrow, and yes I am looking forward to it. I much prefer my summer break when the weather is warm. I having been receiving so many bounced e-mails from the list recently that I thought that I should let you all know what happens when the rootsweb computer listserve robot thing-a-ma-jig gets a bounced mail, due to a mail box being full usually but with AOL, hey sometimes that stuff just bounces. With 3 bounces from the same address, the computer will unsubscribe you automatically. The bounced e-mails are sent to me as list owner. I used to try and forward them on to the person, but I gave up. When a mailbox is full, it's full. I now delete any bounced mail that I receive from the list. Don't feel bad if the computer at rootsweb unsubsribes you. It unsubscribed me yesterday and I had to resubscribe. I can't understand why it did. It told me that I had too many bounces but all of the bounced mail comes to me and none of mine came back to me. My mailbox couldn't have been full because I check my e-mail everyday. I get 50-70 messages a day now (I am on the NC-SC list and a lot come via that list) and there have been times when I have seen 400 or so in my mail box when I didn't check my mail for 4 or 5 days for some reason for another. I think that it messed up. I have checked my mail everyday since the holiday started. (I missed checking on Tues. sometimes due to a class I was taking but that's over with now.) So, what I am attempting to say is that that computer robot can make an error. Just resubscribe. I have the digest set to go out every 24 hours or when it gets to a certain size, whichever comes first. The 24 hours usually. Of course if there are no postings it won't go out. I am now using my spare research time going through old newspapers in the Sumter County Archives. (In the basement of the Sumter County Genealogical Society building. Actually the building belongs to the county and the archives and rents the top to the Society for $100 per month.) I am transcribing everything that I see that might be of genealogical interest. This is going to take me a very long time. The first box that I was handed has a variety of old papers from Columbia and Charleston. Some as old as 1856 and some as "new" as 1929. It will take a long time because I am reading a lot of the stories. They are so enjoyable. I liked this story from the Carolina Herald in the year 1856. (I am telling it as I remember.) A man in Ohio filed for divorce. He and his wife had been married for almost two years but he was suing her for divorce on the grounds of fraud because he said that she was not fulfilling the marriage contract. They had been married only on few days when he came home and found her gone. She had steadfastly refused to come back and he had just finally given up hope. Her statement was that she was glad that he had filed for divorce. If he hadn't, she had intended to do so herself because she would never have married him if she had known that he had a bald head. The judge granted the divorce. Happy New Year, Cindy

Merry Christmas to all of you and your ancestors From Me and all of my ancestors. Faye
Merry Christmas to All once more, Some of you know about the new photos on the Clarendon County Archives pages. I also have some of Oak Grove if anyone is interested in an e-mailed copy. I have photos of the church and the old 1 room school house. (My Lowder great grandmother who is also Dee's Lowder grandmother taught there. Her maiden name was Timmons.)I took the pictures Sunday before last (on the 14th of Dec.) so the church has Christmas wreaths on the front doors. If you are interested, let me know. It will be my Christmas gift to you all. If a good many are interested, I may just send them out via this list. I compressed them a great deal so they don't take up much K at all. Happy Holidays. I am up late because of Christmas vacation and because I slept late this morning. (Until 8:30 no less.) I am still so awake that I am going to read a while. (Sean is up watching T.V. while I type. I have a picture of him holding a huge bass that he caught at Santee (Lake Marion) about a month ago. I just might put that one on one of the web pages somewhere. I have a photo of the Santee River that I plan to put on my Palmetto State Roots page. There's not much of the river left. Most of it is under Lake Marion now. What was the mighty Santee does not have the flow of water that it had when I ancestors traveled the river. Most of the water was diverted to the Cooper River long ago. Off to read now, Cindy
Cindy, Just to let you know, I have never had any problem reading any of the writing on the Sumter pages. I'm not sure what this even means as far as fancy writing. Keep volunteering; you're doing fine, and you have the added fact that the Sumter pages look far more attractive than most! Merry Christmas! Best regards, Dolores Pringle Myrtle Beach, SC
Hello everyone and Merry Christmas, I received a complaint this a.m. via e-mail about someone not being able to read the Sumter and etc. queries due to "fancy writing." I will paste it below without the name or sender's address. I let the person know that there is not any fancy writing on the pages as I see them in my browswer. The only font codes used might be an italics in a title every now and then. There is no "fancy writing" in the surname or queries. I am assuming that the problem is with this lady's browswer. The surnames and the queries are in simple plain text as would be on a typewritten pages. They are your basic font. I do not code the fonts at all so they are plain text. What do all of ya'll see when you look at the pages. It should be what's set as default in your browswer. Unless you have changed it, it is a very, very plain text. ____________________________________________________________ Here is her message. Cindy, I am going to make a complaint about the the way the queries are written. Especially the Surnames. I can't read half the surnames when they are written in that fancy writing. This is not just Sumter County, but the other Counties also. I go in & read most of the counties queries. If I have information which will help other, I reply to the queries. If I can't read who they are inquiring about then there is no way I can help them. ___________________________________________________________ I would also like to remind folks that I am a volunteer. I spend more time doing these pages now than I do with my own research. I hope that the rest of you feel as I do that encourgament is more appropriate than complaint. Cindy
There is an extremely large amount of Hodge genealogy being taken as fact when it is erroneous. The person with the ability to correct it refuses to even look at documentation. Since much of this relates to my direct line I hope to get it corrected by as many people as possible. I will list two individuals and documentation here with more to follow. I will gladly share any information and documentation with anyone that is interested in the facts. John Hodge b. 1775 Benjamin Hodge b.1764 These two were brothers as documented in will of Benjamin 1815. I have all SC census listings John 1790-1850, Benjamin 1790-1820.
