    3. Cousin Dale, Thanks for the information. Good to find a new family connection. My Uncle Fred T. Coker Jr. is living in Myrtle Beach, SC and has a ready memory about much of the family. Most of the material which I have came from him and my father. My Grandfather Fred T. Coker Sr. moved from somewhere around the Hebron-Cades community to Columbia before 1920. He raised his three sons in the Olympia Village community in Columbia. The connection I'm most interested in proving is the parentage of Whitley Coker Sr. Uncle Fred is confident he knows the connection, but I haven't seen any documents which establish it beyond doubt yet. I think this research may need to be done in North Carolina or Virginia. Someday I'll take the time and do the research. I want to add more Coker information on my web pages someday when I have spare time. If you have anything that might do well there, please send it my way. Especially any images of family members. Keep in touch, Steven J. 3. There were serveral newspapers during that time frame. One I just was reading last week was the Sumter Watchman. There's an excellent article in 1866 regarding the Dingle's Mill event during the Civil War. The ones I have found have been the actual papers and on microfiche at the South Caroliniana Library of USC in COlumbia. I'm sure someone else will be able to give you more info. If not, contact the South Caroliniana. Damita On Sat, 24 Jan 1998, Deborah Byrd wrote: > Hello I questions about the ealry newspapers of Sumter/Clarendon/Lee county area. 3. Dale, I have a LOT of information on the Coker family. Most of the information was collected by my Uncle Fred T. Coker Jr. and my father James F. Coker, deceased. The focus of their research was the Whitley Coker Sr. line. Whitley Coker Sr. came to Sumter District before 1790 and is shown on Mill's Atlas. Two of the main Coker lines in South Carolina are the Caleb Coker line (Hartsville Cokers) and the Whitley Coker line (Sumter District Cokers). Both of these two lines descended from Cokers who came from England to Virginia in the 1600's then spread into North Carolina and later into South Carolina. The oldest Whitley Coker line cemetary I've seen is in Puddin Swamp. My Uncle Fred T. Coker Jr. showed me the cemetary site about 15 or more years ago. Some of the tombstones had been destroyed but several were standing and legible. Cokers known to be buried at the Puddin Swamp cemetary include: William David Coker 3/06/1821 - 3/03/1900 wife Hazeltine 1/19/1833 - 3/16/1871 Margaret Coker 5/19/1856 - 3/15/1889 Henry Coker 5/15/1854 - 1/27/1867 John J. Coker 3/05/1860 - 2/14/1893 Robert J. Coker 10/07/1850 - 9/22/1855 James Myers "Moss" Coker Jr. 8/12/1857 - 11/24/1925 Joseph Cunningham Coker 9/05/1859 - 1/18/1889 Wonder if anyone has done anything since then to protect, preserve, or restor the cemetary site? Does anybody know? I would be glad to exchange information with other family members. Steven J. 2. Cynthia Ridgeway Parker
    3. Hello list, Well I recieved a message today from my server letting me know about bouncing e-mail (rootsweb always forwards the SCSumter ones to me). All of us on Farmers Telephone (Infoave) FTC-I.net had our mail bounce. Now the curious thing is that I was talking to my cousin Dee's husband Ken ([email protected]) last night about the e-mail not coming in or out yesterday but that we could get on the internet. That has happened quite a bit recently. Once when I contacted our ISP they admitted that they had had trouble with the e-mail. They told Dee the same thing. Then Ken has contacted then about it and they insisted that it's with his computer. (How come mine had the same problem across the county and I have a Mac and Ken has IBM ? Hmm) Anyway, we didn't get the mail that went out over the list yesterday. Goodness knows what else bounced back that folks sent to me. This morning I had 89 messages. That's because I didn't get to my mail yesterday afternoon. So, this is just to let the FTC and Infoave folks know that our mail bounced and maybe someone out there on our list not with those ISP's will send a copy to me and I will send it out over the list. Here is a bit of what I got and the next time that they tell Ken that it's his machine, he can show them the entire message. Ken, I will forward all of it to you. This is everyone who did not get their mail. Note all of the ftc ones and I bet that the Charleston and Orangeburg ones go via infoave too. 3. Hello fellow Old Sumter District Researchers, Our numbers are growing. I saw at least 3 subscribe messages in my mail box, just today. (I receive CC of them and all of the bounces that don't make it through the robot.) Last night the disks at Rootsweb went into an overload. So if you don't see your message which you posted yesterday by the end of today then please resend it. It may have gone out to become "Lost in Cyberspace." Plus, the Digest was turned off while the disk problem was being resolved so if you got your digest in EMAIL mode it is because that is the way it was sent by Rootsweb to help with the backed up mail. (I don't think that a digest of our list went out yesterday. Maybe, I am on mailmode but there haven't been a lot of messages to create a digest recently. It does go out every 24 hours as digest if there is only one message anyway.) Anyway Brian (of Rootsweb) estimates the problem is over and by now all is back to normal. Happy researching, Cindy in Sumter

Also, does anyone know > where St. David's Parish and St. Mark's Parish would be "located" now? Here is a description of St. Mark's Parish From History of Sumter County by Dr. Anne King Gregorie pg. 24 "During the 1750's so many new settlers dame to live in the High Hills and adjacent country, that the region became of political importance. In 1757, therefore it was made into a new parish called St. Marks' with representation in the Commons House of Assembly. The line which separated St. Mark's from the Prince frederick's was an extension of the northwest line of Williamsburg Township to the Santee and the Pedee. St. Mark's embraced all the area between these rivers northward to the North Carolina line, and was the largest of the parishes." I have a map that shows the parishes. Prince Frederick (created 1734) looks to me to have covered what is now Williamsburg and parts of present day counties west of present day Horry and Georgtown. (All Saints and Prince George Parishes were along the northern coast of S.C. with All Saints hugging the coast line and Prince George spreading out some to the west to what is now the N.C. border. Prince Frederick was west of Prince George. St. Marks was west of Prince Frederick with the Santee River being its southern border and the Pee Dee River being its northern border separating St. Marks from St. David's. St. Davids was north of St. Marks and they both shared a border with Prince Frederick. Another map that I have show the St. Davids Parish border with St. Marks more closely as Lynches River. (Present day Lee County river) Seems to me that St. Davids has present day Florence, Darlington, and some of the other counties which are in what is known present day as the Pee Dee section of S.C. I would add Chesterfield, Marlboro counties to that list. Looks like Marion County was probably in Prince Fredericks, along with Dillion County. I do know that in driving through Society Hill, S.C. to take my son to Boy Scout camp that there is a St. David's Acadamy. Society Hill is a very old town. It's in Darlington County, almost in Chesterfield because not long after you turn off to go to the camp you are in Chesterfield. Good luck, Cindy

Hudson, Berta, unknown. His parents were James or Billy Yarborough and Mary Elizabeth Scott or Parnell. She later married a Kirby. Place of burial unknown for her. Ernest and Jeddie are buried in Byrd Cemetery in Timmonsville,S.C. I have been unable to locate a birth or death certificate for Ernest. If anyone knows anything about this family or if you are researhing this family. Please let me know. Ernest and Jeddie had 14 children: James Frazier,Annie Laura,Linwood,George Dewey,Essie Mae,Leon Dove,Nell,Ray Coit,Dwight L,Sammie Lide,Mendel H.,Minnie,Julian and Louise. My father, Mendel and his sister Louise Yarborough McKay are the only members of this original family still living. Since I can not locate a death certificate for Ernest that might provide proof of his father's name and place of birth. I am hoping that perhaps someone in Sumter County might provide information on his sister Annie who married Motte McGee from around the Olanta area. If I could find her date of death perhaps I could locate her death certificate. A number of the above mentioned family members would have lived in Sumter County at various times and mainly involved in farming. Also, does anyone have access to the 1880 Sumter or Clarendon census records that might show a Mary Elizabeth Yarborough as head of the household with children Ernest,Annie,Moilly and Berta or Mary Elizabeth Kirby and Ben ? Kirby with the above named children? I would appreciate any help or words or encouragement. Thanks, Kay Yarborough Goff

    1. [SCSUMTER-L] Downtime for Servers upgrades
    2. Cynthia Ridgeway Parker
    3. Hello everyone, Everyone read the message about the Friday downtime for the Rootsweb web servers. They were down Pacific Time starting about 3:00 for sure because I couldn't get into the Clarendon page at 6:30 South Carolina time. (3:30 Pacific) Here is the latest message from Brian of Rootsweb. The servers will be down again today for a few hours. Happy researching. I spent the afternoon in the Sumter County Archives reading old newspapers again. (I am transcribing the genealogical information and it is fascinating.) Cindy Hi all - As many of you know, yesterday RootsWeb moved our main Web server onto a new pair of load-balanced T1 connections to The Net's core mesh, so we now have a total of 4 T1s' worth of outbound bandwidth. That should last us awhile. The next upgrade we plan is to double the memory in the main list server (lists.rootsweb.com) to 512 MB of DRAM. To accomplish that, we'll need to take the box entirely offline for 2-3 hours and there may be some brief downs after that while we tune things up. The downs will occur during the next 48 hours, and possibly as early as this afternoon if all goes well. After the main memory in the list server is upgraded, the next box we'll be upgrading is the search engine server. The new search engine server will have a gigabyte of DRAM and 45 GB of very high- speed RAID-5 disk storage. When the search engine upgrades are complete, we'll reindex the list archives, reindex the USGenWeb archives, give Marc Nozell all the space he'll ever need for the list archiver (:, and set up scheduled reindexing so the list and USGenWeb Archives searches stay fairly close to current. As always, I'd like to express RootsWeb's appreciation for your support. With a gigabyte of memory costing $3,500 and a RAID-5 array costing $7,500, we couldn't be doing all this without the support of RootsWeb's Members, Sponsors, and Donors.
