    3. Dot, Those Bakers are shown on pages I copied at the SC Archives of the Sumter County Probate Court 1800-1906 Index. I copyied pages with names I was looking for and these Bakers just happened to be on some of those pages. You can order copies of any of these estate papers from the SC Archives. You can also order copies of the Propate Court Index pages for the "B" listings. You didn't say whether or not you are a subscriber to the SCRoots or Coker email forums. So, I don't know whether or not you've received the help files about the archives I distributed recently. From your reply, it looks like you are in the SCSumter forum. But, I didn't post the help files in the SCSumter forum. Steven J. 3. Deborah, Are you a subscriber to any of the Rootsweb.com email lists? If not, you might want to join the SCRoots-L and the SCSumter-L groups in particular. There is also a new Coker-L group you might want to check out. I don't know, but I would expect there is also a Baker-L group. Here is some quick info I have readily at hand on a few Bakers in Sumter District, South Carolina. I'll try to remember to let you know if I come across more. I usually post information on the lists mentioned above. If you're on them, you should see my posts from time to time. Jane E. Baker estate papers Bundle 177, package 31 filed May 9, 1885 Thomas F. 3. Tom, Think the Kings highway was what is now hwy 17 although through the years it has been moved around a bit to remove curves and many alts. have been added to by pass cities and heavy traffic areas. Just above Mt. Pleasant you can take a right off 17 go down a ways and see where the original crossed. I have been told that the Old Wagon trail is now hwy 1. If memory serves correctly the marker at the hwy 76 crossing calls that the kings hwy from Camdin to Charleston. Perhaps there were several. Frank

    3. This was just posted to the Sherwood list with a recommendation to visit this web site: http://members.aol.com/RoadTrails/roadtrai.html THE KING'S HIGHWAY >From Boston to Charleston on the King's Highway was about 1300 miles. It was possible to travel this road by wagon, averaging about 20-25 miles per day. A traveler making the entire journey would have taken at least two months. Conestoga freight wagons, drawn by four to six strudy horses, were especially designed for mud with iron-rimmed wheels nearly a foot wide. The road's origins are traced to the old Delaware Indian trail (across Jersey) which Peter Stuyvesant used to force out the Swedes in 1651. Then in 1673, in response to King Charles' wish that communication be established between his colonies, the first crude riding trail was created for mail service between Boston and New York. Named the "Boston Post Road," it eventually expanded into "the King's Highway." By 1750, a continuous road existed for stagecoach or wagon traffic from Boston to Charleston, linking all thirteen colonies, but the road was a difficult one to travel. During the Revolutionary War, the King's Highway as a link between the colonies helped them to coordinate their war efforts. However, the name was looked upon with such disfavor by American patriots that many began once again to use the name "Boston Post Road." In Cassie Nicholas book "Historical Sketches of Sumter Co." page 43 she states that Stateburg was situated on the Charleston-Camden Road, sometimes referred to as "The King's Highway" and sometimes as the "Back Country Road". She goes on to mention how Stateburg was laid out in 1783, laid out around the High Hills Tavern with the above road as the main street. 1. [SCSUMTER-L] 1820 Sumter District Census in Text form
    2. Cynthia Ridgeway Parker
    3. GUESS WHAT ! I just uploaded a new and improved version of the 1820 Sumter District Census. It loads fast. Just don't print it quite yet because I have to get one more page from Barbara and she is snail mailing it. Also, I have a typo that I have seen in the bit about when the census was taken. Plus at least one set of numbers is out of line. Ya'll look at it and see what you see that needs fixing and please let me know. I am really sort of tired of looking at it for a while. I spent 3 days getting those columns of numbers straight. Lanny worked himself to the bone sending it through his OCR software and then fixing the errors that the software made. He really worked a long time with it. Someone is working on the Clarendon one too. It will be ready as text in the near future. I am also making a page for the 23rd Regiment Company I from Summerton. Nelson McLeod sent me a roster that he copied from an old paper. I will have that up by the weekend. I am swamped with page stuff right now. I need to update the Alice Drive Middle School page. I have two things to add to the announcements page but that will have to wait. I am going to eat supper now and quit playing computers for the evening. Cindy

For those who would like to know where some of their families went, I am listing those found in Choctaw Co., AL in 1850 and 1860. A couple have their burial places noted. 1. Re: [SCSUMTER-L] QUERY: King's Highway vs River Road?
    2. Cynthia Ridgeway Parker
    3. Damita, I have thought about that same thing before: more than one road being called the King's Highway. The one here in Sumter County, 261, from Pinewood through Stateburg and on to Camden is called the King's Highway. Highway 17 along the coast from Myrtle Beach to Georgetown is called the King's Highway. I am just guessing, but maybe roadways that were built before the Revolution and paid for with the King's money were referred to as the King's Highway. I have never read that anywhere; it just seems sort of logical. Something that we could look into somewhere, somehow. We need more of a historian to anwer that. Poor us, we are just family tree rooters who happen upon history in connection with our folks. Good hunting, Cindy

    1. [SCSUMTER-L] QUERY: King's Highway vs River Road?
    2. Damita D. Green
    3. On Highway 261 near the intersection of 76/378 and 261 in Sumter County, a few miles before Statesburg, stands a SC Historical Commission marker entitled "Early Charleston Road". It makes reference to this road as being called "The King's Highway". I thought I had read or heard somewhere that the River Road (Clarendon COuty road 76) which the Richardson Cemetery and one of the site's of St. Mark's CHurch (more SC Historical sites) is located on, was also referred to as the King's Highway. What present day road(s) really comprise the King's Highway? 1. [SCSUMTER-L] PRINGLE cemetery
    2. DPringles
    3. I will post the directions to the PRINGLE cemetery now, and I will post the same for the CHANDLER cemetery later. The old PRINGLE property is located on the right on Brewington Road just past Concord Presbyterian Church traveling towards Mayesville. There is an open field with a stand of trees in the center where the old home stood. The cemetery is to the left in the woods located at the back of this property. I have not been to this one, but was told the directions by my late father-in-law, Samuel Mayes PRINGLE, Sr. Many of the the PRINGLES are buried in the Concord Churchyard but this family cemetery would have the graves of William PRINGLE and his wife Elizabeth MCCOY PRINGLE as well as others. Another small PRINGLE cemetery is on the Brewington Road across Hwy. 378. The cemetery is located between Mayewood High School and a house that, at one time, belonged to the FINCHERS. This cemetery contains marked graves of John PRINGLE and his wife, but certainly has some unmarked graves also. If anyone needs further infomation on the above, please let me know. Thank you! Best regards, Dolores Pringle Myrtle Beach, SC

    1. [SCSUMTER-L] Fullwood famiily query
    2. Deborah Byrd
    3. I am interested in infromation on the Fullwood family of Sumter District. I have copies of the wills for James C. Fulwood dated May 1839, Robert H. Fulwood dated Dec 1854, and William J. Fullwood dated Sep 1832. I am trying to find out how this family ties in with Andrew Jackson Baker and John W. Baker who along with Fullwood cousins McKnight and Anderson were involved in a legacy dispute with R. H. Fulwood over the estate of James C. Fullwood and William J. Fullwood. 1. [SCSUMTER-L] DWYER and JOYE Families
    2. Wm McI
    3. Searching for information on the DWYER and JOYE families in Old Sumter District. I know that Samuel DWYER served in the Revolution and died in 1832. His son James DWYER (1784 - 20 Jan 1866) was my ggg grandfather. His daughter Martha E. DWYER (4 Dec 1815 - 3 Apr 1885) married Francis E. JOYE (6 Jul 1812 - 26 Aug 1838). Their children included Sarah Adelaide JOYE (who married John Franklin McINTOSH) and Legrand Wheeler JOYE (who married Martha Theresa RHAME). I would appreciate ANY information on these DWYER and JOYE families, I have a fair amount to share on RHAME and McINTOSH families. Thanks, Bill McIntosh
