Hi, Would like to talk to someone in the area regarding McElveen kin. Looking for the parents of my ggrandmother Leticia McElveen who married James H. Hancock. Leticia was born c. 1850. Her children included Roxie Hancock m Lynch; Earl Hancock, Keith Hancock and Jeddie Hancock m Ernest Linwood Yarborough. Jeddie and Ernest Yarborough are my grandparents. Leticia is buried at Byrd Cemetery in Timmonsville in a plot beside one of her daughters, Roxie Lynch. I do not know where James is buried. I grew up in what is now Florence County at Sardis. I believe Letitia's parents probably lived near the area. I have searched all of the Willilamsburg info I could find and no luck...perhaps someone in Sumter would have some information. I would appreciate any help. Thanks. Kay Yaroborough Goff
Thanks for that info Bubba. Even though I think I only meet him once (when I was 12) I do know Robert China. He was my mother's brother. I have met one cousin this way. He was only a year old the when I came to Sumter. I'm trying to see what or who else it out there. Thanks! Robin
A few years back (two or three) a gentleman came down from Charlotte and brought an extensive history of the China Family....I can remember part of it....the first person that they were decended from was a man named Norton....he had a plantation that was straddled Turkey Creek on the Eastern side of the city....this land was the China Dairy Farm whne Dr. China was killed by Mrs. China in l924 (25?)....the City shops are there today......Think if you will contact the Sumter County Museum you will find genealogicl charts and pictures of many in the family......there were two China's here....one Dr. A. J. China was doctor and also druggest....on Main Street....(have Post Card of this) and the other was his son Dr. Archie J. China of the famed Sumter murder......Also have picuture of China residence on Main in l901......Musuem Archives is best source for most of this......I rember a black officer named Robert China....he was not the first black officer on the Police force but the second....a man named Burns was first.....I have met Officer China that is currently on force ....he has nice manners and had nice visit with him talking about his Mom and Dad.....Mrs. China helped us get her street (Gates) in the City when I was Mayor and we were trying to bring cities services to the black community in South Sumter......This was not the first annexation in this neighborhood...but was second and it came at a good time to be a plus in our goals......hope all this helps......regards....bubba -----Original Message----- From: Robin Gray <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Monday, June 22, 1998 5:11 PM Subject: Re: [SCSUMTER-L] AFRICAN AMERICAN CHINAS Thanks anyway. would love an order form for Alan's book about Potter's raid. My husband's ggggrandfather. Thomas Connors was part of this. Thanks for the information and for the order form email to [email protected] Sally Connqrs
Hello all, Excuse any typoes. I have a mashed finger. (Door,Ouch). The long awaited, Illustrated Recollections of Potter's Raid is now available by Allan Thigpen of Sumter is now published. It's great. Allan has done a fantastic job. (I bought 2 yesterday. My husband works with Allan and they talked almost everyday about when the book would be back from the printers and then the bookbinders.) The book "contains the memoirs of soldiers and civilians who were witnesses to the events, as well as excertps of official records, newspaper accounts, and personal letters to family and friends." The book has over 300 pictures and maps and is about 700 pages long, with a full index. If you don't recall what Potter's Raid is all about, take a look at the page on my Sumter site about Sumter's history. Let me know if you would like an order form. I have scanned the one that Allan gave me yesterday. (One side anyway. The side with the order slip.) The Sumter County Genealogical Society is handling it. It's $30 plus $3 shipping. (No tax since the society is non-profit.) Bye, Cindy
Barbara - A very good suggestion. In the course of "discovery" on certain law suits in which I am involved, I have found that CD-rom is the most economical methodology for copying large numbers of documents. (1) It is less expensive than microfilm or large-scale paper copying, (2) storage of the "copies" is not a problem, (3) indexing is facilitated, and (4) sharing via disk or the Internet is easy [for example, a number of family Bibles are available at the Virginia State Library ... a breeze to download and print out without leaving my desk]. cld -----Original Message----- From: Barbara Eberly <[email protected]> To: Charles L. Looking for any information on HUDNALL, specifically William Henry "Harry" HUDNALL out of Sumter SC, Jefferson Davis HUDNALL also b. in Sumter. Any HUDNALLs out of Texas. Any HUDNALLs out of Oklahoma, Payne Co., Lincoln Co., Osage Co. and Oklahoma Co. Looking for Mode JOHNSON or possibly Mose. I'm not sure where he was from, AL is what I've seen. He ended up in either MS or OK, possibly even TX. He would have been born about 1840. His wife was Dolsa PILGRIM / PILGRAM. She is also on the elusive list. She would have been born about 1840 also, not sure where. She was Cherokee, Mode was white. They had one child that I am sure of, Dolsa JOHNSON b. 10 Nov. 1861/63 in Kemper Co. MS. Dolsa is not on any of the Indian rolls. Thanks... Vickie L. Carter
Seeking information on the McBride family this area, this time period. I have "Gamel" McBride as the father of Margaret Elizabeth, born 1824 in Sumter Co. Have seen the surnames Gamble and Gambrell in the county -- wondering if there is a connection. Also, could Gamel be misconstrued as an entry for Samuel? Trying to draw some conclusions to assist in research that has little basis in fact at this point. Margaret Elizabeth McBride married Samuel Edwin Dickey Johnson in Sumter Co. about 1841-2. Charlotte
In a message dated 98-06-05 11:33:04 EDT, you write: << ELLIOTT, SC located in Lee County/ ELLIOTT Baptist Church located in Lee County/ ELLIOTT School (historical) located in Lee County/ ELLIOTT College located in Richland County/ ELLIOTT Cut identified as "a channel" in Charleston County/ ELLIOTT House Museum located in Beaufort County/ ELLIOTT Lake identified as "a reservoir" located in Privateer, SC in Sumter County/ and ELLIOTT Millpond located in Clarendon Count >> Here's one more for you I found while checking for the above in the book, South Carolina Highway Historical Marker Guide, no author listed, published by the SC Dept. of Archives & History, 1992. p. 49 "Temple of Sport. US 17, W of its junction with SC 303, between Ashepoo and Combahee Rivers, near Green Pond. On top of this ridge stood a sylvan temple erected before the Revolution by Colonel Barnard Elliot, patriot and sportsman. The structure was supported by columns in the classic manner. The site, a part of Colonel Elliott's Plantation 'Bellevue' afforded an excellent stand for hunting deer. Erected by Colleton County Historical Society--1969." Also, there is an historical home in downtown Charleston whose name eludes me at the moment although it is quite famous. It is a hyphenated name, the _______- Elliott House. I suppose it is named for two old Charleston families who occupied it at some point-- only speculation. URQ
Resending because I got the addresses wrong originally.
This is my John. What is your connection? Do you have any of his descendants? Faye
Faye wrote, I have gathered information on 3 Hodge lines. The families are John b. 1775, I have a John HODGE born 1775 and died 1854. He married a France DAVIS and they had a daughter Jane Elizabeth HODGE and she married a William Henry HUDNALL. I don't have any information John's parents or siblings. Rose
I have gathered information on 3 Hodge lines. The families are John b. 1775, Benjamin b. 1764 and Abraham b. 1755. 1 believe they are brothers. Benjamins will of 1815 mentions John but Abraham was dead by this time. Sibblings listed in this 1815 Will are: John Benjamin Lydia m. Norton Jane Elizabeth . Haley Mary m. McCleland Holland m. McCeland Sarah m. Courtney & Nichols Martha m. Hodge or remained single. They were in SC by 1790 but came from NC. This line had been in this country for quite some time. At the present I am most interested in documenting their parents, where they came from and extending the line in both directions. Any info appreciated. Faye
