    2. Ken Schmidt
    3. Faye, Jordan is a small community near both Manning and Davis Station. It is a crossroad on SC 262 towards Santee dam, and extends into the farm area towards Davis Station. Davis Station is between Jordan and Summerton. I have "kinfolks" at that time (and today), in this area of Clarendon...as well as Bloomville, Foreston, Paxville, erc. Dee in SC

    3. Jordan is a crossroads on the road between Manning, SC and the Lake Marion area called Wyboo, as that road heads toward the Lake Marion dam. It is a mile or so before the highway crosses the "first water". There is a church or two and there used to be a store or two. Ervin & Betty Shaw poptop@usit.net Lexington, S. 2. The only way I know is to join the Sumter County Genealogical Society. It's only $15.00 a year. You also get to visit the Genealogical Society free for the year. The address is The Sumter County Genealogical Society, P. O. Box 2543, 219 West Liberty Street, Sumter, South Carolina 29151-2543 Phone number 803-773-9144. The Watchman is always good. Jackie

    2. The NAACP would find that book offensive. If it doesn't agree with their way of thinking then it is not only offensive but racist. I often wonder how they seem to remember and know how their anscestors were treated when I remember nothing about how my anscestors treated them. I didn't even know my anscestors had slaves until I read it in a will about three years ago. Another one of those unanswerable questions.

    1. Re: [SCSUMTER-L] CSA
    2. Faye, Thanks for the info. Hope you will not object to my passing on to an African-American friend. I understand there was a James Russell who was a freeman and African-American that served in CSA in Walterboro, SC. This info was printed when the NAACP wanted the Confederate Monument at the Walterboro Courthouse removed from the courthouse grounds. Perhaps the Sumter Genealogical Society should look for a copy of LIFE ON THE OLD PLANTATION IN ANTE-BELLUM DAYS written by Rev. I.E. Lowery, a former slave on the Frierson plantation who removed to Columbia, SC. I know this book is out of print but perhaps someone could find it in a specialty shop. I would surely be willing to contribute toward the purchase price. It's likely the book would be of use to our African-American genealogy researchers but the book depicts life in slavery as far less restrictive then most have assumed... Regards, Gene

    3. Hi folks, There have been big doings here in Sumter recently. For those of you who don't receive the Sumter newspaper, here are some links to the website that will be of interest. http://www.theitem.com/city/citydesk7.html http://www.theitem.com/city/citydesk8.html http://www.theitem.com/city/citydesk9.html My nephew and I attended the unveiling of the statue of Thomas Sumter. We walked over with the parade from the museum to the courthouse. I had thought for a while that we wouldn't get to. My brother, Timmie, had an emergency kidney operation Saturday morning and I was at the hospital. Tuomey hospital is across the street from the musuem and Timmie's room happened to face the musuem. My mother and sister in law were able to watch the parade from his window and report to him what they could see. He was still sort of groggy then, but by the time that my nephew and I got back from the unveiling, he was sitting up, having a milkshake. Cindy

    3. Just had a wonderful interview last night with a new found elderly family member who gave oodles of information on my SC OLIVERs. She made mention of a Halleytown/Hollytown (unsure of spelling) that was located about 10-12 miles outside of Manning, Clarendon Co, SC (in the direction of Summerton). Apparently this was on present day Hiway 301, on the road that runs from Summerton to Manning. This is circa 1920-40. She also mentioned that Elizabeth Baptist Church (outside Manning) was sometimes called Halleytown Church. I am confused, because it would seem to me that if Halleytown was 10-12 miles outside Manning on the way to Summerton, that would almost be in Summerton. Anyone familiar with this community? 3. The article from the Stiles diary is continued from December, 1999, which was up to 1896. Sorry, I should have put that at the top of the page. About half-way down the first column on page 7 you'll see where 1897 begins. It's right between December 31 and Jan 2nd.
