    3. Hi Faye, I'm researching Courtney in the Sumter area, specifically Samuel Thomas Courtney, b. March 25, 1817 or 1818. I have not so far been able to confirm his parents. I'll be happy to share what I have with others researching the family. 3. Cindy, Thanks so very much for your kind offer to photo Col. Benbow's gravestone! I have often gone to your SC webpages and am delighted that the rosters of the 23rd SCV are included there. My actual relationship to Colonel BENBOW is that of first cousin, three times removed. I do not believe that he ever married or had a family and, therefore, he has no direct line descendents... at least none I can find. I am making him a personal project of mine because I think he was quite a fascinating person, a brave leader, and that he deserves to be remembered. I was not aware of the "Henry Laurens Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans" that you say was commissioned last year. ...Can you recommend anyone associated with that group who I might correspond with? I did here from Windy, the archivist, who contacted me almost as soon as I posted this yesterday!.. and I'm just about to e-mail her now to order the material available at the archives. I sincerely appreciate your help with this request.. (and will happily reimburse for any film, processing, or mailing costs) Thanks again! 3. I am trying to find out the tie between AMY HAMPTON (maiden name unknown) whose husband Richard died in 1803, and these families mentioned above. Amy and Richard apparently never had children before his death. Amy outlived him by 30 years. In her 1843 will she named the following people: Niece ELizabeth Lansdell (Landsdale?) Joshua A. Spears James M. Pitts Niece Amy Adelaide Spears Susannah Brunson Anderson A Spears Henry Spears Melbry Ann Norton James Clark Richard Hampton, Amy's husband, had a sister named ELizabeth who married Mason Spears, but this family removed to MS in the early 1800's long before Amy's will was written, and none of the names of their children match these names anyway. Richard's sister MARY married a Clark and had children Lucy and William. Perhaps this is James Clark. Perhaps these are relations through the brothers and sisters of AMY and not the Hamptons... Can anyone enlighten me? Regina Roper

    3. Ann, The next time that I go to Manning, I plan to take a photo of Col. Benbow's gravestone. It will eventually be posted on the two pages that I have with rosters of the 23rd SCV. I have photos somewhere of when the Henry Laurens Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans was commissioned last year, but I have to look for them. This was at the cemetery, at Benbow's grave site. I should have taken a photo of his grave site then. Windy, who is the archivist, will mail out copies of things that she has there in the archives. Just get in touch with her. Her email address is on the Clarendon page. Just go to the Clarendon Archives list. In fact, she is on this mailing list. She wants me to come over to Manning and do a book signing, so when that's set up, I will get over to the cemetery and get the picture. I can't promise when that will be. My cousin, Dee, and I are going to do the book signing event together, and just have to get with Windy about when they are open on a Saturday that both of us are available. Cindy

    1. [SCSUMTER-L] Colonel Henry Laurens BENBOW, CSA Manning, SC
    2. Ann Chernow
    3. Hello, everyone: This is my first time posting here. I have been told by other researchers that : "Henry Laurens BENBOW started out as a Capt. commanding I Co. 23 Infantry (Sprott Guards) but by the end of the war he was a Colonel commanding the 23rd Inf Reg. He was wounded and captured at Five Forks Va. a few days before Lee surrendered, and while in the hospital he was visited by Lincoln. Colonel BENBOW is buried in the Manning cemetery and there is a picture of him and one of his gravestone in the Clarendon County Archives." I would very much like to have a copy of whatever material is available on him from the Clarendon County Archives. I already have one photo of him found in a book on the Civil War, but would love to have information on and/or photo of his burial site. Does anyone here visit those Archives? Would you be able to look for this info for me? (I'd be happy to reimburse for any expenses or exchange research favors here in Nashville.) If not, do the Archives accept requests for copies of materials, etc? Also, I understand that his father was Moses Martin BENBOW who was a lawyer, and served in the SC legislature. Any fellow BENBOW researchers here? I am descended from Moses Martin BENBOW's brother Evan BENBOW, b. 1818 SC, lived in AL. Would love to exchange information. Thanks, Ann Chernow Nashville, TN chernow2@mindspring.com

    3. Andrina: I have been out of town for the last month and just returned home and found your query about the Jones cemetery off of US 521 between Sumter and Manning. I am descended from this Jones family and it is known in the family as the Anthony B. Jones Cemetery. I am not descended from Anthony Jones but from his brother Ludolphus B. Jones. Howard Jones that lives in New York is descended from Anthony and I have some information on the people that are buried there. Are you descended from the Jones family of William Brittian Jones? If you are contact me and maybe I can help you, because I have a large file on the Jones descendants. 2. Mayor Bubba seems to be a volcano of information, so.... Does he, by any chance, know anything about Dr Jacques Bishop of Bishopville, Lee Co? I have never run into a more elusive figure than Dr Bishop. Although the town is named after him, no one seems to have any info whatsoever about him (other than his date of death). Got any ideas where I might find any leads? Thanks much and best wishes for the new year, Marcie Bowen-Astley

    3. Alex Haley taught them how, never mind that written history shows different. Read this about my poor aunt, taken from a newspaper. It can be assumed that 'The sympathetic negro ' had been a slave, from looking at the dates. Can one honestly think that "The sympathetic negro ", would have tried to save my aunts life had he been treated as bad as we are now led to believe? Lavinia being the grandaughter of Moses. Charles Westberry 4th grgrandson of the Rev. Moses Westbury of The High Hills Of Santee. ----------------------- Polly, William And Sarah Stanfill - The Valdosta Times - Saturday, February 9, 1878 Arson And Murder. Polly, William, And Sarah Stanfill Perish In A Burning House. Mrs. Lavina Stanfill; The Mother, Burned, Perhaps, Mortally. The Torch Plied By Her Step Son-In-Law And Step Grandson. One of the most terrible cases of arson and murder was committed near Ocean Pond, in this county, last Sunday night - the house belonging to Mrs. Lavina Stanfill, wife of the late Wm. Stanfill, and the victims being her three little children, aged respectively, nine, seven and four years. During the night a negro man on the place discovered the dwelling on fire, and hurrying to the scene of the conflagration, arrived just in time to arouse Mrs. S., after considerable effort, from a deep sleep. She awoke to find herself quite cut off by the surrounding flames, and with a desperate plunge for life succeeded in getting out severely burned, from which she will probably never recover. The poor little children were unable to escape, for it was impossible for any one to reach them. The oldest, a little girl, was seen to clasp the youngest in her arms and make a desperate struggle to escape, but the fire fiend had her entirely surrounded, and she but hastened their end by running into the jaws of a fast approaching and terrible death. She swooned and fell, and naught could be seen but the dim outlines of the two struggling forms in the lake of fire. The other child was unseen, but perished further in the house. The sympathetic negro carried the suffering woman to his house and then returned to the smoldering ruins to keep vigil over the ashes of the innocent victims of a hand too foul to touch the earth with its pollution. When the daylight brought relief to the solitary sentinel the neighbors gathered in and a search for the cause of the fire was made, and not in vain. Tracks were found to where a horse and mule had been hitched in the woods near by, and the tracks of the horse and mule led to Mr. Joseph L. Howell's residence, just across the Florida line, who was a son-in-law of Mr. Stanfill's - he having married a daughter by Stanfill's first wife. Mr. H. appeared at the door and at the sight of the men turned pale and trembled. He being out of the State and the party having no authority to arrest they had to leave him. The news of this harrowing affair having spread like wild fire over the country, and several persons having came forward and testified to numerous threats Howell had made to the effect that he would burn down her house over her head, a party of gentlemen gathered together and crossed the line with the intention of bringing him over at all hazards, but when they went to his house he and his son William had fled for parts unknown. The difficulty seems to have been this: After Mr. Stanfill's first wife died he married a Miss Lavina Westberry, a woman whose character was not suppose to be beyond reproach, and his son-in-law, Mr. Howell, and his children by his first wife, were very much embittered by the act, and until the old man's death they were on anything but amicable terms. After the death of Mr. Stanfill came a bitter contention over the estate; however the liabilities were greater than the amount of his property, and after much litigation and trouble the widow got a dower, and the rest of the property went to the creditors. This was the cause of the trouble. The evidence before the coroner's jury gives a better idea of the subsequent plot on the part of Howell and his son to destroy the property and the lives of the second wife and her children; and how they endeavored to get Mr. Miller Clayton, another son-in-law of Mr. Stanfill, by his first wife, and his sons into the foul game. The reader will agree with us that this is one of the most horrible deeds of the kind on record and let us hope that the hounds of justice will never rest until the guilty parties shall be brought to a just and merited punishment. -----Original Message----- From: VisitHeaven@aol.com [SMTP:VisitHeaven@aol.com] Sent: Wednesday, January 12, 2000 8:31 PM To: SCSUMTER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SCSUMTER-L] CSA The NAACP would find that book offensive. If it doesn't agree with their way of thinking then it is not only offensive but racist. I often wonder how they seem to remember and know how their anscestors were treated when I remember nothing about how my anscestors treated them. I didn't even know my anscestors had slaves until I read it in a will about three years ago. Another one of those unanswerable questions. ==== SCSUMTER Mailing List ==== Rootsweb has a search engine available for its mailing lists.
