Saturday, January 31, 1920. NIGHT FIREMAN IS FOUND DEAD J.W. FORD, 50, was found dead this morning in the greenhouse of CHARLES A. MOSS, in Oakwood cemetery. Death was due to heart trouble. MR. FORD , who kept a store on a street connecting Drayton and Rock Cliff, was acting temporarily as fireman of the plant, in the absence of the regular fireman, MIKE DOWND, who is sick. Last night was FORD'S first night on the job. MR. GARLAND MORGAN, who is employed by MOSS, went to the man's house earlier in the evening to request him to work during the night. MR. FORD agreeing. MR. MORGAN and MR. FORD proceeded to the conservatory, arriving there about 8:30 o'clock. MR. MORGAN reported this morning that when he and MR. FORD separated last night the dead man was complaining of a pain in the region of the heart. This morning when MR. MORGAN reported for his usual duties he found the body of MR. FORD near a furnace in the section of the building. The body was discovered about 7:30 o'clock. The man had been dead some time . MR. FORD was married and his wife survives him. He was well thought of in the Drayton village. { Was there a greenhouse in the Oakwood cemetery and why did they need a fireman ? } ------------------------------ Monday, Feb.2, 1920 CLARENCE WILSON TILLOTSON, 35 years of age, died at his home in Drayton village yesterday afternoon of influenza. The funeral will be held this afternoon from the Cannons Camp Ground Methodist Church. Burial will be in the family plot in the churchyard. MR. TILLOTSON, who had been employed by the mill a number of years, enjoyed the confidence of all who were acquainted with him. He is survived by a widow, who was MISS PEARSON and the following brothers : CLYDE, LAWSON, JAMES, CLAUDE, HOWARD, EUGENE and LEWIS TILLOTSON. With the exception of the last named, the surviving brothers are all residents of either the city or the rural section. EUGENE is connected with the Citizen Electric Co. of North Church street, LEWIS TILLOTSON, a resident of near Newton, N.C.,who is here for the funeral , arrived last night. The deceased was born and reared in the Cannons Camp Ground community. ------------------------------ CHEROKEE- Our little friend LEESE WILLIAMS is up and playing around again after having a bad spell of whooping cough. - MR. D.H. CROCKER, the miller, is recovering from a severe attack of lagrippe. - The Cherokee quartet composed of D.H. CROCKER, ED WARREN, BILL YOUNG and C.W. FOSTER will sing Monday at 3 o'clock. - MR. O.W. FOSTER has moved to his new Bunkalow on Main street. - MR. M.W. TURNER has moved on Johnson street. - MR. SOLOMON POTEET of Carlisle has moved on Church street. - DR. W.W. PAINTER has purchased a new automobile. ------------------------------ LANDRUM - The roads are almost impassible in some sections. Nothing has been done on the roads around Landrum in several years. - MESSRS JOHN CANTRELL and ERNEST SMITH will move to Marian, N.C. in a few days where they will do a general merchantile business. - MRS. J.A. GRAHAM has gone to Charlotte, taking with her, her little son L.C. for medical treatment. - MISS ALMA MORRIS of Greenville is visiting relatives near here. - CLIFFORD MALLORY, THORNWELL EARLE and JOHN CHRISTOPHER , students at Furman University, are spending a few days with relatives. ------------------------------ nancie o. - {suppose to sleet and snow here tonight! }
