Smith of Cedar Springs. We are working on groundbreaking slave genealogy research on behalf of the Magnolia Plantation Foundation in Charleston, SC, to reconstruct family lineages of enslaved people on Drayton family plantations. We are researching Adam Frost, who was first owned by the Drayton family in Charleston, sold to Dr. Frost of Charleston, and lived on the farm of M.B. Smith after the Civil War. His obituary, dated May 17, 1907, appeared in the Charlotte Observer and states that the Frost family came to Spartanburg County as refugees in the Civil War and settled at Cedar Springs. After the war they returned to Charleston but Adam Frost stayed in Spartanburg County. He died in May of 1917, at his home near Cedar Springs on the farm of M.B. Smith, where he had lived for 20 years. The 1880 census shows an Adam Frost living next to Sanford Smith in the Pacolett township. Could Sanford Smith be related to M.B. Smith? We would so appreciate any leads or details you might share if this information sounds familiar. The USF Africana Heritage Project is an all-volunteer research project and website sponsored by the Africana Studies department at the University of South Florida.
