Mr. McElreath was born Nov. 18, 1844, and was, therefore, in his 71st year. He entered the army of the War Between the States when he was 18 years old and was under the command of Capt. A. H. Dean. Wade Hampton was made commander of all of the horsemen belonging to Lee's army. It was during the thickest of the fight at Upperville, Va., that a minie ball that was intended for Gen. Hampton hit Dr. H. V. Westmoreland and who, at the time, was thought to be mortally wounded. Fighting side by side with Dr. Westmoreland was Mr. McElreath, who was given permission to carry his friend off the battlefield. To know him was to love him. He had a kind word for everyone, so unassuming, gentle as a woman, with a heart as tender as a little child. The funeral was held Thursday morning at 11 o'clock at Woods Chapel where the deceased was a devout member since early manhood. The exercises were conducted by Rev. Sam T.
