    2. "Carolina Spartan" Issue: July 23, 1884 Married by Captain James Wood N.P. at his residence Sunday night, the 20th instant, Josephus LEMASTER and Miss Ella KIRBY, both of this county. Ed DAWKINS, colored, living near Cedar Springs was arrested last Saturday for an attempted rape on a little girl, the daughter of one of his wives. She is about ten years old. He is bound over to answer at the next court. The large stable of Jno. W. MAXWELL, opposite W.C. Cannon's Warehouse, was burned Monday night. The fire originated from some unknown cause about 11 o'clock. Loss about $500. The Wash Thompson House, just below the stable, was saved by the timely aid of the Hook and Ladder Company. Last Thursday Mr. Henry White DEAN of Floyd County Ga., and Mrs. Anna B. FLEMING of Spartanburg were married by Dr. Whitefoord Smith. Mr. DEAN is a native of Georgia, a first cousin of the late Major Hosea J. DEAN and a son of Dr. Alvin DEAN who emigrated from this county nearly sixty years ago. It gives us pleasure to state that Mrs. General ANDERSON who has been in Atlanta several weeks under medical treatment has improved very much, and hopes of recovery are entertained. John F. MILLER has been appointed assistant Marshal in place of Mr. Newland. Mr. and Mrs. LOCKWOOD have their daughter, Mrs. GILLESPIE of Marlboro county with them. She is attending the Institute. J. M. NEWMAN, Esq., is at home after an extended trip tuning and repairing musical instruments. Mrs. FARLEY's kitchen and contents were burning Sunday night. Supposed to be caused by the stove. B.M. LANFORD's storehouse and goods, at Woodruff, were burned Monday night about one o'clock. The cause of the fire is unknown. Tuesday morning John DODD and several of his neighbors were much interested in a bear hunt. It is said that a genuine black bear is in the neighborhood and all hands had turned out to capture him. One of the mighty colored hunters claimed that he saw the bear, but only for the smallest fraction of a second. The reason that he did not get a better view of Bruin was because he the hunter had no eyes in his back. free post Lisa
