OBIT-- Greenville News--Mar 26, 1915-- RICHARD T. M'ELREATH,OF GREER IS DEAD Beloved Man Passes Over the River To Rest in the Shade of the Trees. GREER, March 25 ---{Special} --- The kindly, familiar face of Mr. Richard T. McElreath will be missed by scores of friends, who were accustomed to see him each day on the streets of Greer, for on Tuesday night at 10 o'clock he heard the voice of the captain of his salvation and answered the last roll call. Mr. McElreath was born Nov. 18, 1844, and was, therefore, in his 71st year. He entered the army of the War Between the States when he was 18 years old and was under the command of Capt. A. H. Dean. He was in 12 battles, including the three days' engagement at Gettysburg, Penn. Mr. McElreath was a calvry soldied and after the death of Gen. J.E. B. Stuart, Gen. Wade Hampton was made commander of all of the horsemen belonging to Lee's army. It was during the thickest of the fight at Upperville, Va., that a minie ball that was intended for Gen. Hampton hit Dr. H. V. Westmoreland and who, at the time, was thought to be mortally wounded. Fighting side by side with Dr. Westmoreland was Mr. McElreath, who was given permission to carry his friend off the battlefield. To know him was to love him. He had a kind word for everyone, so unassuming, gentle as a woman, with a heart as tender as a little child. He is survived by his widow and two daughters, Mrs. Mattie Wood, Mrs. Wilson and a brother, Mr. Mike McElreath. The funeral was held Thursday morning at 11 o'clock at Woods Chapel where the deceased was a devout member since early manhood. The exercises were conducted by Rev. Sam T. Creech, the pastor, Miss Bertha Smith of Hampton-Lee chapter, U. D. C., read an eulogy to Mr. McElreath. ====================================================== Death Certificate--#4680 County--Spartanburg Township--Beech Spring Town--Greer Name--R. T.
