    2. "Carolina Spartan" Issue: February 6, 1884 Perry E. CHAPMAN, near Mount Zion Church has lately been appointed Notary Public by Governor THOMPSON. Polly CROWDER has not yet found her dog with grayish blue eyes-yellow with darkish colored back, long legged, . . . He is a mighty smart, fierce, quick dog, and a good yard dog. She believes the dog has been stolen and sold, and she would like some information about him. She especially wants to get her dog back. Last Saturday was Candlemas, a festival of the Roman Church, originated very early in its history. On this day the candles for the service are brought in by the members and blessed by the priest. It is also called "Ground Hog Day" for it is a popular tradition that this little animal comes out of his winter quarters on that day if he sees his shadow he hastens back, knowing that winter is not over and that hard weather is yet to come. If it be cloudy or raining he remains out, the severity of winter being over. The following rhyme respecting Candlemas Day is universal in Ireland and Scotland: If Candlemas Day be dry and fair, The half of winter's to come and mair; If Candlemas Day be wet and foul, The half of winter's gone at Yule. To the same effect is the old prediction: If Candlemas Day be fair and bright, Winter will have another fight; If Candlemas Day be clouds and rain, Winter is gone not to come again. Si sol splenescat Maria Purificante. Major erit glacies post festum quam fuit ante. Which means: If the sun shines on the Feast of the Purification there will be more ice after the feast than before it. MARRIED: --On January 23d, 1884, by W.T.
