    2. "Carolina Spartan" Issue: January 23, 1884 Anderson NESBITT, colored, had his arm sawed off last week at Nesbitt's saw mill on Tyger. He is the fourth man that has been sawed up at that mill in the last two years. Dr. Marsh CRATON and his brother, John will leave for Mumfordville, Ky., this week. They will make that place their home. Michael MOORE of Wellford, is improving. The ball has been located in the base of the jaw bone. Dr. Joe CARPENTER of Jonesville, was improving when last heard from. Prof. HUGHSTON, of Cedar Springs, has nearly recovered from injuries received some time ago. Last week we received through the post office at this place a marriage notice of Milow GILBERT and Annie WILLIS, which had J.T. McELHENNY's name to it. On Monday before we published, Miss WILLIS, a sister of the girl mentioned in the notice, came to the office and gave our foreman, Mr. Fleming, the same notice. Mr. John Milow GILBERT, the son of Pink GILBERT, says he supposes that he is the person alluded to and that the notice was published either through spite and malice or in a spirit of unaccountable mischief. At the time this marriage was said to take place, he was in the Flat woods engaged in fox hunting. Mr. McELHENNY, denies sending the notice and publishes the following statement: Spartanburg, S.C., Jan. 18, 1884 To Mr. Chas. Petty: Dear Sir: this is to inform you that I did not send the within marriage notice (the one alluded to above) for publication. It is a forgery on me. Jas. T. McELHENNY. Issue: January 30, 1884 W.H. WHITE of Valley Falls, and M.E. JOHNSON, of New Prospect have been appointed Notaries Public by Governor Thompson. Last week Thos. W. IRWIN, W.P. IRWIN, R.P. WHITE and A.L. WHITE spent two and a half days hunting in the neighborhood of Landrum. They killed 235 partridges and 10 to 15 rabbits. They had five dogs which were tolerable tired at the close of the hunt. THE OTHER SIDE Last week we had John Milow GILBERT's denial of his marriage with Annie WILLIS. In order that both sides may have a hearing, we now give certain other statements, bearing directly on the case. Annie WILLIS now states that she was married to John Milow GILBERT, by Rev. J.T. McElhenny, Saturday night, October 20th, 1883. They wished to keep the marriage a secret until Christmas and gave fictitious names to Mr. McElhenny, he taking the name of Tom CANNON, and she that of Millie FOSTER. The marriage notice was published at the suggestion and with the knowledge of Milow GILBERT. MR. McELHENNY'S STATEMENT Saturday night the 20th of October, 1883, or about that date, I was aroused from my bed about 10 o'clock, by two persons wishing to get married. The man did most of the talking and gave his name as Tom CANNON, a son of Ben CANNON and her name as Mollie FOSTER. I questioned them closely as to their identity, for I did not wish to marry them without knowing something about them. He reported that they were from Clifton. I being satisfied that they were of age joined them in marriage. Since that time Annie WILLIS has been to my house and so has Milow GILBERT. I feel sure that Annie WILLIS is the woman I married as Mollie FOSTER and I have good reason to believe that Milow GILBERT is the man who called himself Tom CANNON. J.T. McElhenny. Mrs. McElhenny says that these two persons mentioned above came alone to their house and asked to be married. Besides, her husband, Mr. McElhenny, the only witnesses were herself and Miss Lizzie McElhenny. In a few days after the marriage Annie WILLIS called and stated to Mrs. McElhenny that she was the girl that was married and that they had given wrong names and she knew they were doing wrong a the time. When Milow GILBERT called a few days ago, she recognized his as the same person that was married as Tom CANNON; and she is sure that he, Milow GILBERT and Annie WILLIS were married by [cut off] MARRIED January 15, 1884, by Rev.
