"Carolina Spartan" Issue: July 9, 1884 When Captain COPELAND was living at New Prospect, he stocked a large pond with carp, putting in some in three different years the first having been introduced in the fall of 1879. Mr. E. P. CLEMENT, who now owns the pond, was cleaning out the **** a few days ago and caught two of these fish. One of them was 22 inches long and weighed five pounds. Mr. W.W. LANCASTER, living between Philadelphia Church and Glenn Springs, had a mule killed in his stable by lighting. Monday evening, the 30th of June. The stables was set on fire and burned. Loss $400. W.S. JOHNSON, near Walnut Grove left a stalk of cotton at our office two and half feet high with a bloom that came out on the 3d of July. There were 25 forms it. [sic] On the 5th Capt. Jas. L. DEAN living in town reported his first bloom. J.H. HADDEN, near Wellford, had one the 3rd. Miss E.F. HENRY has returned from Wytheville, Va., where she had been teaching in a Female College. She is at Prof. DuPre's. J.B. CLEVELAND, S.J. SIMPSON, J.K. JENNINGS, Prof. F.C. WOODWARD and L.G. POTTER of Spartanburg and A.N. WOOD, of Gaffney City left for Chicago last Firday. L.P. MURPHY, clerk in GEDDES's Store, was severely attacked with Meningitis, or some similar disease Saturday evening. He was better Tuesday. Daniel KERR let a horse run away Monday evening. It demolished a buggy and bruised Mr. KERR. The horse and buggy belonged to Mr. BOYD, of the firm of Traylor and Boyd. Prof. A.B. STALLWORTH and wife, of Woodruff, were at the Merchants Monday, on their way to Hendersonville. "Carolina Spartan" Issue: July 16, 1884 Some of the finest peaches and apples we have seen this season were brought to this office last Saturday by Mr. Daniel WILLIS. They were large and juicy and well flavored. Captain Joe SPRIGGS has raised the largest smooth tomatoes we have seen this year. Mr. P.A. WALL, a teacher at Soddy, Tenn., a son of the late Jason WALL, was in town last week.
