"The Free Lance" Issue: July 17, 1903 CUT SLEEPING MAN Gaffney, July 14, -- On Monday night about 12 o'clock Goldie DAVIS, who was drinking at the time went to his room at the Hapton boarding house near the Gaffney Manufacturing Company and found the electric light globe gone. He had previously broken two earlier in the fight. No being able to make a light he went to the bed of V.M. INGRAM, who was sleeping, and cursed him and then began cutting him with his knife. Mr. INGRAM jumped out of bed and grabbed a chair to defend himself when he was attacked by Winner DAVIS, Goldie's brother. Both of the DAVIS boys made their escape. Mr. INGRAM was painfully cut about the face and neck. Dr. SETTLEMYER was called in and dressed the wounds. A warrant has been sworn out for the arrest of both the DAVIS boys. It is supposed that they went back to North Carolina, they having come here from Forest City about 10 days ago. --It is reported here that a Negro living on Broad River was trying to kill his wife last week. He cut at her seven times with his knife and was stooping down to pick up a rock to hit her with when his mule kicked him back of the head and knocked him silly. Since the blow on the head the Negro has been crosseyed and foolish. His wife woman-like is nursing and waiting on him. BAIL GRANTED TO WHAM Laurens, July 15-John G. WHAM was granted bail in the sum of four thousand dollars by Judge DANTZLER this afternoon at 7:30 o'clock. WHAM killed L.W. RAMPAGE on July 9. The Charlotte Observers' theory that bloodhounds never catch fugitives is strengthened by the failure of the animals to get a scent of WHAM Thursday. Even the alliterative, "Wheres Wham?" could not spur them on to a discovery of the fleeing homicide. EDWARDS on the 4th of July. LOCAL AND PERSONAL [Spartanburg] --It will probably be of some interest to Spartanburg people to know that John WHAM, who killed Lafayette RAMAGE near Clinton last Thursday, had a brother-in-law who formerly lived here. This was John A. COLEMAN, a well known cotton buyer, who died about five years ago.
