    1. [SCSPARTA] "Carolina Spartan" Issues: March, 1883
    2. "Carolina Spartan" Issue: March 14, 1883 A remarkable case of executive clemency took place in Columbia a few weeks ago. Gabe GAFFNEY, colored, from Spartanburg county was in the penitentiary for some crime. Last year C.P. WOFFORD, Esq., sent up papers to Governor Hagood to have him pardoned. The papers were in "the mill" when Governor Thompson took up the old records and after an examination, granted a pardon. Meantime, Gabe had died, and his friends, as well as the attorney and Governor were all ignorant of the fact, insomuch as the chaplain of the penitentiary fails to publish the obituaries of all deceased convicts in the church papers. Issue: March 28, 1883 MARRIED, Wednesday evening the 21st instant by Rev. Dr. Dixon, at the residence of Dr. Crafton, Miss Sallie CRATON and Mr. HINE, of King's Mountain. Soon after the ceremony the bridal party left for King's Mountain, their future home. Miss CRATON was a niece of Dr. CRATON. COURT WEEK On Tuesday of last week, Doc FLOYD, a colored youth was tried for stealing cotton from the field. He was defended by Bobo & Carlisle. The jury rendered a verdict of acquittal. Lang HILL, a "pearl" young white man of Asheville, N.C. was then put on trial and convicted for horse stealing. He was a sewing machine agent and borrowed or hired a horse for a week. He came down to Spartanburg and got to drinking freely and then sold the horse; hence the conviction. It is sad to see a young man of good family throwing away opportunity and character in this reckless way. He was defended by Bobo & Carlisle. The whole of Wednesday was taken up with the case of the State against Worth J.Duncan for assault and battery with intent to kill and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. C.P. SANDERS and W. Waddy Thomson represented the defendant. He was acquitted of both charges. Thursday morning the case of Sam WALKER for the murder of Mose HAWKINS was taken up. E.H. BOBO and J.S.R. THOMPSON, attorneys for the defense. This case took up two days, and the jury handed in a verdict of guilty at 8 p.m. Friday. The trial attracted much attention. The murder was a most cruel affair. The colored people of the community have been greatly excited about the matter and they crowded the Court House during the trial. Saturday morning the case against John FOSTER for wife murder was called. C. P. WOFFORD and J.S. WILSON appeared for the defendant. The jury rendered a verdict of "not guilty". Monday morning there was a dead lock when court opened on account of the absence of witnesses E.M. BOMAR was called up and pleaded guilty to stealing live stock. Daz HUMPHRIES was then tried for carrying a concealed pistol. There being no evidence to sustain the indictment the Solicitor asked for an acquittal, which was granted. The next case called was that of the State against Pat BASKINS and Sarah BALEW, colored, for and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. It was proved that they beat in a most unmerciful manner a little boy living with them and a grandson of Sarah. They occupied about two hours beating the little fellow and washing him down with salt and red pepper. If the witnesses made true statements no punishment short of death would be too severe for these persons. Mr. CARSON represented the defendants. The verdict of the jury in their case was "guilty". Barom FICH was found guilty of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. H.L. FARLOW defended him. Wm. F. O'SHIELDS was tried for the same crime, but was acquitted. J.S. WILSON, being his attorney. W.J. ABERNATHY was convicted of unlawfully selling whiskey. He had left the county and no defense was made for him. Tuesday the Stevens murder case was taken up. After the criminal business is finished the jurors will be dismissed. This will be about Friday morning. Estrayed, from my plantation near Glenn Springs, on night of 11th instant, a medium mare Mule 5 or 6 years old; light color. Any information will be appreciated. L.A. MILLS free post Lisa
