The bank and post office will be closed, and that will be the nearest approach to a celebration we will have. Miss BURROUGHS, of Virginia, is spending a few weeks with her sister, Mrs. CRIGLER. John B. HENNEMAN is at home from the University of Virginia. Major Ben H. RICE and wife, and Miss Mary WOLLACE of Union are visiting the family of Dr. DUNCAN. Last week Mr. WAKEFIELD, near Reidville, had $180 stolen from his house. Our Chief, J.B. KING was sent for, and on investigation arrested Richard MILLER, colored, about 19 years of age, on the road to Wellford. He ascertained where he had spent $80 and one 20 dollar gold piece had Mr. WAKEFIELD's initials cut on it. MILLER confessed to spending [cut off] Issue: July 11, 1883 Mrs. J.B. CARTEE, of Inman, was filling a lamp with kerosene from a jug, last Wednesday evening without putting out the lamp. The oil caught fire and the lamp dropped to the floor and fire was communicated to her clothing and that of her little daughter, Etta, who was near by. James CARTEE, a son, did all he could to extinguish the flames, but the little girls was so severely burned that she died the next day. It is thought that Mrs. CARTEE is not dangerously burned. We are indebted to Rev. T.V. GOWAN for these facts. Issue: July 16, 1883 A woman by the name of Eliza SCRUGGS living near Arrowwood church was arrested last week for selling whiskey. She waived examination before the Trial Justice and was bound over to answer at the next term of court. Wm. G. BLAKE has taken the school at Cherokee Springs. He began last week with about 40 pupils. R.T. CASTON, Esq., of Cheraw, and L.E. CASTON, of this place, went mountainwards Saturday. They expect to ramble over Western North Carolina for the next two weeks. Miss Carrie McMAKIN and Miss Minnie JONES accompanied by Miss Lily CARLISLE to her house in Chester last week. They will remain there two or three weeks. W.R. LIPSCOMB and his wife are spending their honeymoon at White Sulphur Springs, Hall county, Georgia. MARRIED: LIPSCOMB - LAFAR On the 5th of July 1883, at the residence of the bride's father in Summerville, S.C., by Rev. S.A. Weber, Editor of the S.C. Advocate, Mr. W.R. LIPSCOMB of Limestone Springs, and Miss Sue M. LAFAR. Issue: July 25, 1883 J.J. HANNAN, painter, was on a scaffold at Wellford last week, and it suddenly gave way and he fell about 18 feet. He was stunned somewhat, but not seriously hurt. Mrs. Margaret STROBLE, wife of Daniel STROBLE was very sick Monday, being stricken with paralysis. Her friends do not expect her to survive the attack. A soiree will be given by Miss Ollie THOMPSON, Friday evening, the 27th inst., in the hall at Cotton Exchange Row. Admission for gentlemen 50cts.
