    2. "The Free Lance" Issue: April 10, 1903 LOCAL AND SPECIAL --Mrs. J. W. BAGWELL, who has been quite ill for some time at her home near the city is now improving. --The monthly report of Chief FANT for March shows that 68 gallons of whiskey and 30 dozen bottles of beer were seized. The fines amounted to $425. --Dr. O. W. LEONARD returned to the city today to resume the practice of his profession here, during which time he has been attending his father who is now greatly improved. --W. H. CREWS has bout a half interest in the tobacco business of J. W. ALLEN. Mr. CREWS has also purchased a half interest in the Coca Cola bottling works owned by Mr. ALLEN. --The county commissioners are still discussing the matter of appointing road overseers, which has been delayed for some time. The overseers will be appointed soon but just when it would be impossible to state. --Geo. O. TENNEY has secured a $100,000 contract for constructing a dam and power plant at Nealy Shoals near Una station. --Jack GOSNELL one of the owners of the team and liquor seized near Whitney, was arraigned before United States Commissioner McGOWAN and bound over to the next term of the United States court. --J. H. GOSNELL of this county has been appointed by the governor as one of Spartanburg's representatives at the Cane Growers Convention in Macon, Ga., which convenes May 6. {Sugar Cane? - wonder if this is the Jack mentioned above} --The wagon, whiskey and Winchester rifle seized from the white man, Jack GOSENELL recently by state constables, will be forfeited to the United States unless claimed within 30 days. --Miss Jessie DEAN has been appointed sponsor for Camp Joe WALKER at the reunion to take place in New Orleans in May. OLD OFFENDERS CAUGHT Pete JACKSON and Ernest THOMPSON, two Negroes of this city, have been arrested for engaging in a fight in a Negro pool room some weeks ago. JACKSON escaped after the trouble and was not seen any more until yesterday when he was arrested. CAVINS CHRONICLES: [April 6] --J.A. PEARSON is progressing nicely with his vegetable farm. H has about completed his waterworks for watering the truck. R. M. WOOD is in charge and they will push things to success. --Mr. and Mrs. Matt WALKER and little daughter Eulah of Hobbysville spent Sunday with relatives in this section. --M.C. PEARSON went to Charleston last went with a car load of fine cattle. [sic] --Dr. W. R. WALKER of Hobbysville was here last week. The doctor is an expert with a violin and banjo and made some fine music at the home of George TAYLOR. CRESENT CHRONICLES: [April 6] --The saw mills have invaded Crescent and are sawing up the timber that the recent storms blew down. Capt. R. T. NEWMAN is having a fine lot of logs sawed as also is W. P. FOWLER. --Miss Mattie WADDLE has been sick, but is better now. --Bobo NEWMAN who has been sick for a long time, is able to start to school. --The Free Lance is welcome visitor to our home, and we always took to see if Eph GOODLOE has a letter in it. We wish both The Free Lance and Eph success. INMAN NEWS: [Apr. 9] --A fine baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. G. L. SEWELL last Tuesday. --D. B. CANADAY is building a new residence on the Inman Hieghts. --A large force of carpenters are busy on Colonel GANTT's new house and the work will probably be finished by the first of May. --Many of our people are much displeased on account of the methods said to have been employed to force the retirement of Dr. Willie WALL from the county board of education and 100 of our best citizens have signed a petition asking for his reappointment. --News has just been reached of the burning of Baylis JACKSON's house on Z. L. MARTIN's farm 2 1-2 miles east of here last night. Practically everything in the house was destroyed. Origin of the fire is unknown.. --Mr. HUMPHREY's shop was broken into last night, but nothing is missing. It is believed that he work was done by would be burglars in search of tools with which to break into some of the stores. --Miss Bessie CAMP came up from Limestone and spent Saturday and Sunday with her father here. free post Lisa
