LAURENS MILL INCREASES WAGES It was stated here this week that effective at once the Laurens Mill operatives would receive an increase in wages amounting approximately to ten percent. { I would like to say that my mom went to work in the mill at age 14 in 1929 in the cloth room, folding material with a lady named Irene Gault. Her wages was $7.45 per week and she had to give her father $5.00 of her wages when she got paid ! Wonder how many kids would do that today if they had to ?} ----------- Gray Court, March 28 - A gloom of sadness fell over Gray Court Monday morning when the death angel came and carried away the spirit of MRS. BESSIE WHARTON OWINGS, widow of the late MR. GUS OWINGS. She was a consistent member of the Baptist church, loyal worker and devoted mother. The burial was made Tuesday morning at New Harmony church, after the funeral conducted by REV. B.F. CARSON, assisted by REV. C.W. WATSON and a minister from Woodruff. MRS. OWINGS is survived by 3 children, VIRGINIA, LEE ETTA, and RICHARD; by her mother, MRS. J.E. PATTERSON, of Woodruff and the following brothers and sisters; L.C. WHARTON, of Union, MRS. WILKES WALLACE of Gray Court and MRS. JAMES WOODRUFF of Woodruff. She is also survived by one half brother, JAMES T. PATTERSON and by 2 half sisters, MISS JOANNA PATTERSON and MRS. W.C. WRIGHT. ---------- JAS L. DAVENPORT, former member of the police force, has been elected fire chief in this city. Plans to increase the efficiency of the dept have also been made by the council. ---------- LAURENS BASE BALL CLUB ORGANIZED FOR NEW SEASON At a meeting of base ball enthusiasts held Friday night in the city, the Laurens Baseball Club was formally organized for the new season , by the election of WILLIAM G. LANCASTER, as president, J.J. ADAMS as vice-president and CHAS. F. FLEMING as secretary and tres. ---------- MURDERED MAN IS SAID TO BE FROM LAURENS Abbeville, Feb. 7 - WILLIAM FOSTER ANDERSON, of Laurens, was shot and killed last night about 6:30 o'clock at his father's home near Abbeville- Greenwood county line. He was going out to feed the stock and as he got outside of the door was shot through the head and died instantly. The firing was done from back of a feed house 125 yards distance. The deceased was 24 years old and the son of WALTER ANDERSON, who moved to the old KLUGH home to live just before Christmas. WILLIAM ANDERSON was making preparations to move to the county and was visiting his father at the time he was shot. The deceased was a married man and is survived by a wife but no children. WALTER ANDERSON, father of WILLIAM, stated that he thought the bullet which killed his son, from parties unknown, was meant for him.] ---------- LAURENS CHURCH HONORS YOUNG MISSIONARY AND WIFE REV. and MRS. J.WASH WATTS and their baby boy JOHN D.W. WATTS, second , left Laurens yesterday on a journey that will take them to the ancient city of Jerusalem and the Holy Land where they are to become missionaries as representatives of the Southern Baptist Convention.The well wishes and God-speed of many friends and relatives accompany them. ---------- LOCAL AND PERSONAL- March 16. MR. J. SCOTT GEORGE who has been employed at Gastonia for the past three months in connection with the operation of the ice cream plant operated by two Laurens men, COKE GRAY and EARL WILSON, returned to his home several days ago to resume his farm work for the year. - MRS. GORDON DUCKETT and little daughter of Anderson are visiting at the home of MR. and MRS. W.T. CREWS. - MISS WIL LOU GRAY, state adult school supervisor, spent the weekend with home folks. - MISS ELEANOR BALL, who spent several months in Laurens and is now engaged in newspaper work in Spartanburg, was the guest of her grandmother, MRS. B.W. BALL during the past weekend. - S.H. BARTON who recently underwent an operation at the Laurens hospital expects to be able to return to his home the first of next week. - MRS. J.J. ADAMS is at the Laurens hospital for treatment and is reported as doing nicely. - MRS. JAMES ELLEDGE of the Boyd Mill section of the county, is at the Laurens hospital undergoing treatment. - MR. CHARLEY POWERS, of the county, is at the Laurens hospital recovering nicely from an operation for appendicitis. - JAMES McCRAVY, a well known song leader, left Saturday for Morganton, N.C. where he is conducting the song services in connection with revival services, led by the pastor of the Baptist church, the REV.
