    3. Friday, Oct. 19, 1928. PROF. J.B. WATKINS DIED MONDAY AT BELTON HOME J.B. WATKINS, 73, one of the outstanding educators of the state for more than forty years, died Monday afternoon at his home in Belton, after a prolonged illness, following a stroke of paralysis suffered nearly 5 years ago. Funeral services were held Tuesday from the First Baptist Church of Belton. The service was conducted at the graveside in the Belton cemetery. The new mound and the grave of MRS. WATKINS , who died 4 years ago, were blanketed with a great wealth of beautiful wreaths, a collective tribute of love to his memory from scores of friends throughout the section. Pastor J.M. BURNETT spoke tenderly of the influence and usefulness of MR. WATKINS as a teacher and Christian gentleman, saying that he had touched the lives of hundreds of young men and women... J. BARNES WATKINS was the eldest son of HENRY WATKINS and HANNAH CULBERTSON WATKINS and was reared on the farm in the Centerville section of Waterloo township. After attending the schools, he entered Furman University, graduating in 1881. He began teaching schools of Laurens county and for 19 years he was head of the Honea Path school. For years he was superintendent of Laurens city schools, 2 years at Anderson and 12 years at Belton. In 1889, MR. WATKINS married MISS LEILA BURTS, daughter of the late REV. R.W. BURTS. One son, HENRY WATKINS and 2 daughters, MISSES GRACE and ETTA WATKINS survive. He is also survived by 2 brothers, J.N. WATKINS of Greenville and Federal Judge H.H. WATKINS of Anderson and 2 sisters,, MISS FANNY WATKINS, faculty of Winthrop College, and MISS SALLIE WATKINS, teacher in the Florence high school. ---------- LANFORD YOUTH AT LAURENS HOSPITAL RALPH WALDREP, 13 year old son of MR. and MRS. C.L. WALDREP of Lanford, has been a patient in the Laurens hospital for the past several days, recovering from a painful injury suffered when the lad was thrown or fell from a saddle mule he was exercising. His condition was favorable yesterday and is expected that he will continue to improve. At the time of the accident RALPH was 'warming up ' his favorite saddle mule for the " races" which have been held at intervals by the boys and girls of the community who like the more or less strenuous diversion of mule-back racing. ---------- Friday, Nov. 16, 1928 Funeral services were held yesterday from the Methodist church, Watts Mills, for MRS. MARY ETTA COTHRAN, wife of B.B. COTHRAN, of the village. The services were in charge by the REV. J.A. MARTIN, who was assisted by the REV. W.B. JUSTUS of Lydia Mills. MRS. COTHRAN, who was 73 years of age, was stricken with paralysis early Wednesday morning at her home, death ensuing about 6 o'clock Wednesday night. She is survived by her husband, B.B. COTHRAN; one sister, MRS. E.J. LEISTER of Greenville, 4 sons, A.B., Lowell, N.C., R.J., Laurens, D.T., Berkeley, Calif., and J.P. COTHRAN of Union; 5 daughters, MRS. T.W. BENNETT, MRS. E.J. JESSE, MRS. J.C. THOMAS, of Laurens, MRS. W.R. ROGERS of Glendale and MRS. W.R. WILSON of Greenville. ---------- nancie o.
