My John Bishop was son of William Glover Bishop and Sarah Barnett Ballenger. John was born 13 June 1770 in Lincoln, Lincolnton County, SC, but he married Elizabeth Perry of Spartanburg County SC. Their ten kids were all born in Sartanburg County SC: William, John, Charlotte, James J.S.H. Perry, Joseph Clifton, Audria, Cynthia Addis, Margaret, Elias S. (ours), and Nancy. The father of these 10 kids is buried in Mt. Calvary Presbyterian Church Cemetery in near Clayton's Cove in the Clay Community of Jefferson County. Alabama. The family left SC for AL in 1821. Elias (b. 1809) married Mary Alice Cowan Richey, who went by "Alysey," 4 Feb 1828 in Blount Springs, Jefferson Co. AL. They were married by Charles C. Clayton, JP, who was married to Aylsey's sister Eliza Richey. The Richeys came from the Pendelton District SC in around 1820 to Jefferson Co. AL. Elias had 11 kinds, including my James Oliver Augustus Biship, who was child #1, born 14 April 1830. Elias moved the family to Red River County Texas in 1839 and later gravitated to Upshur County TX by 1847. The Richey clan came along to TX in 1839, too.. James O. A. Bishop b. 14 April 1830 married Margaret Stiles on 5 March 1850 in Upshur Co. TX. They had 6 kids, all born in Gilmer, Upshur Co., TX. James died of illness near New Orleans during the Civil War. We have at least one of the letters he wrote to wife Margaret and children while away during the Civil War. My great grandfather was child #5 Joseph Benton Bishop b. 4 August 1860. After her husband died, Margaret married three more times, having another daughter, who died at around age 3 and two more sons. She moved from Upshur County to Milam County and finally to Williamson County, just north of Georgetown, Texas. Here Joseph Benton Bishop married Eskalana Maria (pronounced like the wind Mariah) Hampton. They were parents of my grandfather John William Bishop b. April Fool's Day 1886, who married Janie Agnes Snowden on 30 December 1908. My mother Annie Agnes Bishop was their second child b. 21 September 1916. She will be 96 on her next birthday. Her older sister Iola lived to be 93. That's my Bishop line stemming from Spartanburg SC!! How about you other Spartanburg SC Bishops??
