    1. [SCSPARTA] "The Carolina Spartan" Issue: September 1& 8 1880
    2. "The Carolina Spartan" Issue: September 1, 1880 Mr. L.A. MILLS has some of the finest pigs we have ever seen in Spartanburg. They are thorough bred Berkshires. Mr. MILLS has shown great zeal in bringing improved stock to this county. He will sell a pair or two of these pigs for $12.00, not one third of the amount paid for the original pair he bought. The Yankee is not the only individual that can adroitly use the pocket knife. Mr. B. K. O'SHIELDS, living near Friendship Church in this County sent to the Spartan office a watch chain, whittled out of chincapin wood, which shows considerable ingenuity. One part of the chain consists of four bars in which a ball is cut. The links are about one inch long and are well cut. Wellford: Dr. H.E. DeBARD's dwelling house was burned down one night last week. Some colored persons going from church discovered the flames and aroused the family, but it was too late to save everything of value. The fire originated in the room where the cooking stove was. TOMATOES Mr. Editor:--You recently said that the pronunciation of this word was in some way a shibboleth of the pronouncer's age. Here in New York City the universal pronunciation so far as my observation goes is to-may'-toes. I pronounce it to-mah'-toes. Which of these is nearest eighty? New York, 28 Aug., '80. Corsair. From the above it will be seen that our Institute is attracting attention even in New York. It was jocularly said by Professor JOYNES in his admirable lectures on the English language that as this word was pronounced in three different ways, the age of the person might be approximated by the method of pronunciation. The word being Spanish the "a" in the second syllable was at first pronounced like the word awe. The next pronunciation was like the syllable ah. The last like "a" in fate. The first pronunciation indicates 80 years; the second, 50; the third "sweet sixteen," one of whom the Editor of the Spartan is which. He would also add that the dark age is indicated by saying "tomattusses." Issue: September 8, 1880 W.M. McCRAVY, assisted by some neighbors, captured in Tyger River near Burnt Factory, a Sturgeon, last Monday, weighing 185 pounds,--7 feet 7 inches long and 3 feet 4 inches in girth. Some supposed that this fish came up the country to spend the summer. He like all low country people was making for the S. & A. Road. Saturday the 21st of August, Richard BOMAR of Limestone Springs was married to Miss Emma BROWN. They stole a march on their young friends and it was not known for a week that they were married. free post Lisa
