"The Free Lance" Issue 2-26-1904 Mare Stolen At Enoree J. C. FOSTER of Enoree has a fine mare stolen from the stable at his farm near Cavins Saturday. She was a dark bay mare about eleven years old. Congressman JOHNSON has selected the farm of R. H. BARRY near Moore Station as the model farm for the up-country. A Peculiar Accident Sallie wife of Wm. MAXWELL, a colored woman living on Col. T. J. MOORE's place had a had a peculiar accident Tuesday. When stewing some apples in a half gallon tin can she took the lid off and the contents exploded, burning her face and clothing badly and closing up both her eyes. Some of the fruit struck the ceiling over her head. It is not believed that the woman's sight is lost. WALNUT GROVE GLEANINGS: -Roy STRANGE who has been sick all winter seems to be improving. -L. M. and O. W. HARRISON went to Spartanburg Friday to hear Mr. BRYAN's speech. -Gen. S. F. STRANGE will celebrate his 70th birthday on the 29th of February. His birthday only comes on leap year and he is expecting his children and grandchildren to be with him on that day. We hope he may live to see many more leap years yet. DUNCANS ITEMS: -Robert E. DUNCAN who has been in the employ of O. M. MOORE for the past ten or twelve years as clerk, has gone into business for himself and has opened up a first class stock of groceries. The firm name is Duncan & Grier. -There was a sociable given at H. P. McMAKIN's on the 13th in honor of Miss Louise WOOD of Spartanburg. On the same night there was a pound supper given at Parker GREERs. -A. M. GOLDEN will leave in a short while for Georgia for the purpose of representing a nursery company. -P. A. KELLER is making some repairs on Middle Tygar Church. -Clarence EDWARDS and wife of Greers visited friends and relatives in this community last week. -Anderson & McMakin are running their saw mill on full time. CROSS ROADS CHRONICLES: -Miss BUSH who suffered a severe stroke of paralysis some days ago is still in critical condition. -The friends of Joseph McELRATH will be glad to learn that he is able to be out after a severe attack of grip. -Mrs. T. B. MARTIN and daughter Miss Annie MAY of Fair Forest visited in this section Saturday. -Landrum STAGGS has tired of farming and turned his attention to the cotton mill this year. -Miss Fannie POOLE visited Mrs. Mamie CUNNINGHAM yesterday afternoon. -Miss Johnnie CUNNINGHAM and Miss Emma WINGO were the guests of Capt. J. T. CUNNINGHAM's family Monday afternoon. -Misses Sue and Sallie MABRY two of Cross Roads most charming young ladies were at Fair Forest today. -While Cliff MABRY one of the young sports of this section, was exercising his mule yesterday afternoon, he had the misfortune to lose the dashboard off his buggy, it being kicked off by his mule.
