"The Free Lance" Issue 2-19-1904 A Postmaster in Trouble A warrant has been issued against Postmaster J. T. ROBINSON of Cowpens, charging him with violation of sections 3890, 3891 and 3892 of the revised statutes of the United States, which relates to the unlawful detaining of mail matter in the postoffice at Cowpens and otherwise interfering with matter addressed to another person than himself. Mr. ROBINSON has given bond for his appearance before C. S. Commissioner McGOWAN on Monday next. The case of B. F. PERRY who was charged for transporting whiskey, has been indefinitely postponed it being understood that PERRY is to leave the state. It will be remembered that Perry carried an eight gallon jug of whiskey to a house in this vicinity where he subsequently poured the content of the jug into quart bottles, demi-johns etc. [more- copy cut off] CRESENT CRINKLES: -R. P. JONES is preparing to open a general store and S. F. JONES has about completed his new dwelling. -There is some sickness in our neighborhood. R. F. POLLARD and R. R. POLLARD are sick. -Mr. and Mrs. Rowdy POLLARD who have been living at Enoree have returned to their home at Cresent. -W. J. JONES gave a musical entertainment to the young people which was much enjoyed by all present. -Mrs. Dr. Jones is convalescing. -Mr. and Mrs. R. P. JONES visited relatives at Enoree last week. DONE AT DUTCHMAN: -T. M. BILLINGS is quite sick. -Mr. and Mrs. Eb WEST have a fine daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Dave WEST also have a newcomer at their house. -Henry WESON visited his mother, Mrs. P. R. LAWON last Sunday. -Gist SMITH is milling at TRIMMIER's mill. He grinds three days in the week. -Linder CARRIER is moving from Spartanburg to the LINDER farm near here. -W. S. SMITH went to Union on business Friday. CROSS ROADS NOTES: -J. WINGO left for Tennessee yesterday to buy live stock. -Miss Annie M. and Gillie SETTLE spent Sunday at A. M. HAMMETT's. -Miss May HAMMETT of this place is visiting her brother at Fork Reads. -Dr. H. R. BLACK and wife spent Friday evening at J. T. COOPER's. -Misses Cora and Alice COOPER visited their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. WINGO near Wellford Saturday night. -Mrs. Catherine BUSH who has been very sick is some better. -J. T. Wingo is sick with grip. FINGERVILLE FACTS: -Mr. and Mrs. Hadden LEE have been quite sick for the past two weeks. -Mr. and Mrs. Hadden LEE have a new boarder, a baby boy. NOTES FROM SWITZER: -The young people of this neighborhood were delightfully entertained by a valentine party given by Misses Lunie and Nannie WRIGHT last Friday night. -Angus HATCHETTE of Bishop spent several days last week with his sister Miss Bessie HATCHETTE. -Arden WEST and Woodward ALLEN of Pauline have been visiting Harry WOFFORD. -Mr. and Mrs. DORRAH (?) of Laurens have been visiting their sister, Mrs. Bessie WRIGHT. Messrs MARTIN and McCLINTOCK and Miss ESTES of Ora have been visiting at C. M. WRIGHT's. LENIOR HAPPENINGS: -There was a man through this community today making pictures of our homes and families for the world's fair at St. Louis. -James and Maggie SPROUSE of this place visited friends as of near Campobello last Saturday and Sunday. -J. C. and P. L. SPROUSE are getting along nicely on J. W. PARRIS' building. -Hazel PARRIS of Cherokee is quite ill at this writing. -William MOSLEY and wife of Martinsville were quests of J. C. PARRIS and family of this vicinity last Sat. and Sun. EVINSVILLE EVENTS: -Miss Kate HOLCOMBE spent last week with her sister, Mrs. E.C. WATSON of Laurens. She will go from Laurens to Chester to attend the marriage of Miss Annie Steinkuble(?) for whom she is to maid of honor. She will visit relatives in Cheraw before returning home. -Dr. B. E. HOLCOMBE will spend a few days with his mother this week. -Capt. E. R. HUFF and W. M. ALEXANDER went to Spartanburg Saturday. -Mrs. Dora WALDROP has been quite sick for several days. -Rev. E. Z. JAMES will preach at Grace Chapel monthly on the 1st Sunday morning and in the afternoon of the 3rd Sunday. Will Not Prosecute Forger J. R. HALL, the young man who has recently figured in the double role of forger and atempted [sic] suicide, has caused the Central National Bank of this city to be paid the $75 that he secured from it and will be permitted to remain in Louisiana or any other place that may suit his tastes except Spartanburg. It will not be advisable for him to come to Spartanburg again. It is not known here whether he has modified his views as to committing suicide, but as nothing has been heard of further activity in that line it is presumed that he has at least postponed any plans that he may have in this direction. T.P. CUTHMA who has been living in the city for several months will go to Fair Forest and enter the mercantile business. Constable J. L. WILLIAMS arrived in the city yesterday afternoon with Chas. YOUNG who was convicted by Magistrate E. POTTER of Cowpens for obtaining money under false pretense. YOUNG was given 30 days on the chaingang.
