    3. June 13, 1936. COWPENS BATTLEGROUND NEWS [ By M.E. Ellison] June 11- Coming as a shock to this community was the death of MART MARTIN, 63, of Chesnee, who died in a hospital at Spartanburg Wednesday afternoon after several days illness. MR. MARTIN was born and reared in this section and lived here until a few years ago. After the family moved to Chesnee he often visited here. Surviving him is his widow, MRS. LOU ELIZA MARTIN; 2 sons, EARLY MARTIN of Campobello and VIRGIL MARTIN of State Line; 4 daughters, MRS. VIRGIL JOLLY, Chesnee, MRS. JOHN H. HAMES, Chesnee, MRS. JOE MARTIN of this section and MRS. C.A. LEE of Shelby, N.C.; one sister, MRS. MYRA VICKERS, of this section, and one half brother, M.L. MARTIN of Chesnee. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren. The people of this community sympathize with them in their loss. - G.V. PRICE, who underwent an operation last week, has returned home from the hospital and is doing fine. - MRS. C.M. JOLLY who is a patient at the Mary Black Clinic, is improving and is expected home this week. - WINFRED SCRUGGS, BROADUS and ROBERT ELLISON and LAWRENCE WILLIAMS attended a party Saturday night at State Line given by MISS HELEN PARRIS. - A good rain is needed here very badly. The threshers are threshing grain in this section. ---------- GOWDEYSVILLE NEWS [ By Elizabeth Wilkins ] June 11 - MR. and MRS. ROY CARTER of Spartanburg were Saturday night guests of MR. and MRS. ODELL MORRIS. - J.G. KENDRICK, HOWARD PRIDMORE and W.A. SPEARS made a business trip to Gaffney Monday. - MR. and MRS. R.B. McABEE and son, George, were Sunday guests of MR. and MRS. SAM BALDWIN of near Pacolet. - MRS. JOE BELUE, MISS SARA GARNER and MISS BESSIE GREGORY were Wednesday guests of MRS. ODELL MORRIS. ---------- June 9 BROADUS S. ALLEN IS DROWNED AT FT. WORTH BROADUS ALLEN, 40, of Fort Worth, Texas, formerly of Gaffney was drowned Saturday while out fishing. News of MR. ALLEN'S death was received here Sunday morning in a telegram from his wife, MRS. PEARL ALLEN, to her brother, CLAUDE V. LIPSCOMB. MRS. ALLEN is a daughter of MR. and MRS. JOHN H. LIPSCOMB of the Goucher community. MR. ALLEN was bookkeeper for The Ledger for a period of time about 15 years ago. The family had been away from Gaffney for a number of years. He was a typewriter salesman and while away from home had mailed a special delivery letter containing three $1 bills as presents for each of his three sons, EARL, B.S., and HOMER, for completing their school courses. The letter with the gifts was received the day after MR. ALLEN'S body was brought home after being recovered from the creek in which he drowned. ---------- STORK WINS RACE WITH REP. BENNETT Bennettsville, June 6 - NEVILLE BENNETT, Chairman of the house ways and means committee, lost a race with the stork early today. He rushed from Columbia before daybreak to be here for the event, but missed it by 2 hours. The 9 pound boy was christened NEVILLE JR. ---------- STATE LINE NEWS [ By Hazel Hamrick ] July 30- Friends and relatives of MRS. CLIFF JONES are sorry to know she has typhoid fever. Her daughter, MARY SUE, is improving after being ill for some time with the fever. - MISSES GRACIE McGINNIS and RACHEL HICKS have returned to their home here after attending summer school in Asheville, N.C. - MR. and MRS. CARLIE GREEN and daughter of near Forest City, spent the weekend with the formers parents, MR. and MRS. O.M. GREEN. - MR. and MRS. CLING SCRUGGS spent the weekend with their daughter, MRS.
