1935 COTTON BALE, RETAINED AS RELIC Laurens, Sept. 17.- Cotton must have been king to HENRY THOMPSON, Cross Hill planter for he thought so much of one bale of cotton , he refused to sell it in 1863 and today it is unsold. The bale now is in possession of HALL FLEMING of Ora, a grandson, though it weighs a bit less than the original 454 pounds because of souvenir hunters have plucked tufts of the fleece now in a bonded warehouse. THOMPSON, a slave owner, ginned the bale on a horsepower outfit and wrapped it in cloth bound by ropes. Thirty years ago it was rebaled with jute and steel ties to preserve it. Cotton has gone as high as 43 cents a pound- just after the war and just after the civil war was selling for 40 cents but the bale , handed down through the family is being preserved as a relic. ----- DEATHS AND FUNERALS Campobello, Sept. 14.- MRS.
