1914 OLD SPARTANBURG MAN WRITES INTERESTINGLY OF OLD DAYS A real son of Spartanburg county, who now lives in Haskell, Texas, recently saw in the 'Sovereign Vistor', the official publication of the Woodmen of the World order, the picture of J.J. BURNETT, judge of probate court of Sptbg. Co. Immediately the fraternal spirit, received a letter from the former South Carolian. The letter is filled with what he terms, " the best place in the world". G.J. MILLER, for such is the gentleman's name, was born Feb.20, 1841, at Bivings factory near what is now Reidville. The writer says he attened church at Nazareth. Members of his family are buried there in the Nazareth graveyard and still others are buried at Green Pond church, a few miles to the southeast of Nazareth. MR. MILLER remembers the names of several of the people of that section namely the BURNETT'S, LEONARDS, ARNOLDS and others. He says he recalls JERRY BURNETT, long since dead. One son of this family, says the writer, moved and settled at Adairsville, Georgia, and one of the daughters, he thinks , lives near Reidville yet. Her name is DYER, he says, and futher that she is worth probably $75,000. He also remembers JOE NESBITT, he had two boys, ISAAC and HARPER. MR. MILLER says he now lives in a section of the country where it doesn't take guano to produce crops... MR. MILLER wants to know how many cotton mills there are in the county now. When he left there were three and of very limited capacity. The writer knows the experience of war and he agrees with Sherman in that statement that " War is h-". He says he fought in the civil war under ROBERT E.LEE and STONEWALL JACKSON. He was engaged in several battles in Virginia, Maryland and in one in N.C. Although in his ripe age, he keeps in touch with the gentle slang of the day. In concluded this letter to judge Burnett, MR. MILLER says he will "ring off". Spartanburg had 1,000 people when he left for Texas. Now she boasts of more than twenty times that number. ----- { I'm sure someone can tell us more about MR. G.J.
