Co., SC 1900 census and found Ollie Smith, Male, age 18 born Sept 1881 in SC. He is in the house hold of Josephus Smith and wife Jane, born in SC June 1832 & April 1839 resp. There are two sibs in HH...Avaline 41 yrs. & single & John S. age 21. It records they had 12 children and 9 surviving in 1900. Then in the 1850 census I found Josephus age 18 born SC in 1832 in HH of A. Smith and wife Nancy both born in SC age 53 and 49 resp. There are several children listed as sibs of Josephus. I didn't find A. & Nancy in the 1860 Spt. census. Nor did I find Josephus there; so they may have moved or died early. If either of them lived beyond 1913 a Death Certificate required that year by the FEDs would give the parent's names. Apply in the state of their death by obtaining a form from SC.gov (or whatever state they died in). Ollie should have one which would prove who his parents were for certain and give you the maiden name of his mother. In SC the archives in Columbia have these records for easy access as does the Spartanburg library. Thought your Smith might connect to my Peter Smith line whose descendants move to SC from Westmoreland Co., VA but didn't find anything yet. There is another prominent Spartanburg Smith line from PA and I have lots of data on it but didn't see a connection at this time.
