    3. Cuthbert Harrison, as listed below, is apparently a grandson or other kin to the Cuthbert Harrison who was a Captain in Bland's First Virginia Light Dragoons in the Am Rev. Harrison was a captain of one of the six 'troops' in the unit. 'Light Horse' Harry Lee was another Captain in the same unit at the same time. A Lipscomb relative of mine served under Capt. Cuthbert Harrison in the First VA Light Dragoons at Valley Forge. 3. Chester, Monday, Jan. 21, 1929. CHESTER'S KID SOLDIERS by Arthur Cornwall In the summer of 1864 South Carolina called on her 17 year-old boys and men between 45 and 50 years of age. These troops were known as reserves and were carried to Florence, where they guarded the Federal prisoners confined in the stockade near the town. In November, 1864, South Carolina called out her 16 year-old boys and men under 45 years old, known as bonded men, and school teachers under 45 years of age. These troops were formed into a brigade of 4 regiments and were known as South Carolina State Troops. They were carried at once to the front and mustered into the Confederate service by General De Saussure at a point about half way between Grahamville and the battle field of Honey Hill. They performed all the duties that any troops were called upon to perform, serving in the trenches at Honey Hill and doing picket and vidette duty along the coast from the Savannah river to James Island. They were on James Island the night Charleston was evacuated and retreated with Hardee's army to Raleigh, N.C. From Raleigh they were brought back to S.C. and disbanded and sent to their homes, James Island the night Charleston some weeks after General ROBERT E. LEE'S surrender. These troops were composed almost entirely of 16 year-old boys, Company H, Third Regiment, for example, had an enrollment of 50 and only 7 of these were men. The Third Regiment had for its field officers COL. ARTEMUS GOODWIN, LIEUTENANT COLONEL HARRINGTON, MAJOR McIVER and ADJ. CAPTAIN SAMUEL GAILLARD and all of these had been in service before. Under such officers these troops were well drilled and were under good discipline and on the march from the sea coast to Raleigh, there was no straggling among the ' kids' and they were often congratulated upon their staying qualities. They never had any clothing, shoes or blankets issued to them, and never received one cent of pay. They had about enough rations issued to keep them hungry, but they were always in a jolly good humor and ready for anything that turned up. CHESTER'S LIST FOLLOWS: Company A, 3rd Regiment State Troops- Capt. GILES J. PATTERSON. First Lieut. -W.D. CORNWELL Second Lieut. - S.LEROY BOYD Third Lieut. -W . GILL WYLIE First Sergeant - J.H. 3. Judy, I'm researching my Henderson family in Spartanburg County. I can get no further back than my GG-Grandfather John A. Henderson b. 1/1/1861 d. 6/11/1928. He and his wife and some family members are buried at the Daniel Morgan Cemetery in Cowpens, SC. I mention this because there are several Henderson's buried in the same area and one of them is a James Henderson (cannot make out the dates). There is also a Jimmie H. Henderson b. 1832 d. 1917 and a Mary Jane Ellison Henderson b. 1852 d. 1933 wife of J. H. Henderson. If you're interested you can find my Henderson lineage at http://beaty-cox.org and there are photos of the tombstones for the above mentioned Henderson's in my cemetery project link at Daniel Morgan cemetery. Pat Webster http://beaty-cox.org --------------------------------------------------- Does anyone have information on the George M. Henderson family. He married Nancy Emlie Taylor about 1857. They had the following children, who was most likely born in Rutherford County: 1. John Thomas Henderson who married Sarah Ann McKinney (this is my line). 2. Sarah Ann (Sally) Henderson, (don't think that she was married.) 3. James (Jim) Henderson, (may have married a Mary). 4. Levinah E. Henderson 5. Peter Amaziah Henderson married a Mary E. 6. George Bunyon Henderson who married Effie Susanna McBrayer. He is buried at Holly Springs Church Cemetery. 7. Isaac N. (Newton) Henderson 8. William J. (Joe) Henderson Thank you. Any information on this family would be great. Judy Henderson Carver

    3. August 9, 1929. KILLED IN ACCIDENT MRS. RUTH THOMAS, age about 75, mother of MR. WILLIAM B. THOMAS, who is employed in the clothing dept. of Jos. Wylie and Co. in Chester, was killed instantly yesterday evening about 7:30 o'clock, when the auto in which she was riding collided with another car driven by MR. W.H. STROUD, who lives near Great Falls. The exact cause of the accident is not known but from what is stated it appears that MR. FRANK M. THOMAS, son of MRS. RUTH THOMAS, who was driving , had just entered the highway from his home. THOMAS suffered a bad cut on his head and neck, a broken collar bone and left shoulder. MRS. JANIE WOOD of Newport News, Va., sister of THOMAS, who was visiting was severely bruised. Her daughter, CHRISTINE, received a deep cut on the head. MISS CURREN THOMAS, also a sister of THOMAS, received bruises. MISS JULIA STROUD, sister of W.H. STROUD was badly shaken up. MR. STROUD'S two children, LOUISE and LAWRENCE were also injured. The injured were brought to the Pryor hospital in Chester. ---------------- Tuesday, April 16, 1929. EARLY HISTORY OF FAIRFIELD COUNTY The following article appeared in the Yorkville Enquirer of recent date and is taken from MillS' History of 1826: The first settlement of this district took place about the year 1745. COL. JOHN LYLES and his brother, EPHRIAM, were among the first settlers; they located them selves at the mouth of Beaver Creek, on Broad River. EPHRIAM LYLES was killed by the Cherokee Indians in his own home, but by a wonderful interposition of Providence, the Indians were off and left LYLE'S wife and 7 or 8 children in it, after killing a negro, who was outside of the house. The LYLES were natives of Brunswick, Va., but moved to this country from old Bute county, N.C. About the time of the settlement of the LYLES, CAPT. RICHARD KIRKLAND, the grandfather of MR. REUBEN HARRISON, settled on the Wateree river, at or near COL. PEAY'S plantation. KIRKLAND was a Virginian and a man of great wealth in those days; he owned fifty brood mares. By the county court act, [ the work of the late Judge PENDLETON] the upper country was divided into counties. At that division the name of Fairfield was first given to this section of country, and in all probability it owes its name to the mere good pleasure of the author of that act. Winnsborough is the seat of justice of this district and it is one of the most pleasant and flourishing villages in the state. It was the Headquarters of Cornwallis... { this is all I have on this article }. ----------------------- LANCASTER NEWS ITEMS IN BRIEF Major NEAL, the 12 year old son of MR. and MRS. O.L. NEAL of Midway street received a severe gash across the face and nose on Wednesday night when he was hit and knocked down near his home by a car driven by CLAYTON RODGERS. It is said the boy was playing in the street with other boys about dark and ran out from behind a car and directly in front of the RODGERS car. - A mild case of smallpox was discovered here a few days ago and promptly quarantined. The patient , a young white man named VERNON HUNTER, who lives on South Main street, is now recovering and the quarantine has been removed. ------------------------ Tuesday, June 25, 1929. MRS.
