Sept. 29, 1911 AT AGE 86, MR. EASLER TAKES A 12 MILE 'HIKE' MR. HENRY CALVIN EASLER, who is 86 years old, walked from his home to Spartanburg, a distance of 6 miles and back yesterday afternoon. The 12 mile 'hike' gave him no more fatigue than it would have given a healthy man one-fourth his age. " Uncle HENRY" , as he is affectionately known lives below Cherokee Springs . He has spent most of his life in that section, having been born near Cherokee on Feb. 13, 1825. He had a little obligation to meet in town and combined business with the pleasure of a brisk walk by making the trip afoot. After attending to his business he greeted several friends, made some purchases, and with his arms full of bundles, started homeward with a long, swinging stride. EDWARD PAYSON WESTON was acclaimed for his feat of pedestrianism performed at the age of 70. When MR. WESTON was a child of 6 years, MR. EASLER was a soldier, fighting Mexicans. He was the sole surviving Mexican War veteran of Spartanburg county. He was wounded in the battle at Mexico City. MR. EASLER is also a Confederate veteran. He enlisted in 1863 and was assigned to Co. C, 23rd Regiment, under CAPT. ISAAC EPTON. With his present vigor, it looks as though MR. EASLER would easily pass the century mark. { Mr. Easler died Jan.29, 1913. The bare fact, plainly stated, is that MRS. L.C. McGUINN, who lives on Limestone street, 70 years and some months old, without teeth for 14 years, is now growing a full set of good teeth. A reporter yesterday went to the home of MRS. McGUINN and asked concerning the teeth. " Granny", as the old lady is known, stated most emphatically, when questioned by the reporter, she very willingly opened her mouth and showed eight fully developed new teeth. The swollen condition of the gums seemed to indicate that still more were on the way and she will shortly have a full set. Granny stated that she first discovered the coming of her teeth while in a hospital in Norfolk, Va., where she was undergoing treatment. Her doctor announced to Granny that she was again growing new teeth. --------------------------------------------- UNION, Sept. 10- MISS MARGUERITE BLOCKER, of St. Petersburg, Fla., who is visiting her aunt, MRS. I do show Nancy as a daughter of Thomas and Anna Pearson, however I did see a discrepance about Anna's last name. One researcher has said Delaney, another has said it was Hughes, daughter of Robert and Anna Hughes. I have not done any research myself on Thomas's wife, so I cannot say for sure. Maybe she was a widow when she married Thomas and that has led to the two last names, I just don't know. Please use this simply as a guideline and use to verify for yourself, I have Thomas Pearson born 1780 the son of Anthony and Mary PENNY Pearson. This Anthony was said to be born after 1755 in Granville Co. NC. Though the right age, I have not seen any record of Am. Rev service for him. Anthony is supposedly the son of William and Mary THORPE Pearson. This William is said to be born 1736 in Isle of Wight Co. VA the son of Frances and Mary TURNER Pearson. Most of this information I believe I found on Ancestry Tree. My personal r! esearch goes down to Anthony Pearson, born 1814, married to Malinda Waddell, who would be a brother of your Nancy Collite. Hi Betty It's so nice to hear from you. I hope you and yours are well. Thanks for the added info to my Bomar files. Merry Christmas, Judy
Sunday, May 18, 1952. What Spartans Were Reading NEWS OF 20 YEARS AGO This is what Spartans were reading about May, 18, 1932- compiled from the files of the Spartanburg Herald-Journal. Spartans were told their automobile license plates for 1933 would be black, numbers on white background and that they would carry the slogan, " The Iodine Products State". ALLEN SETTLES, 16 year old son of MR. and MRS. J.H. SETTLES of Inman, was named South Carolina's outstanding 4 -H member. He represented some 6,000 state members at national convention in Washington, D.C. In previous years, C.D. McMILLIN of Campobello and CARROLL BRANNON of Inman had won the honor. AMELIA EARHART PUTMAN took off on a flight to Paris to become the first woman to fly over the Atlantic Ocean alone, and Spartans were recalling that she visited here just a few months before. She landed at Memorial Airport in her autogiro Nov. 12, 1931. She was welcomed by Mayor BEN HILL BROWN and A.B. TAYLOR, Chamber of Commerce president. She told a Herald reporter, " I do not believe the time is far distant when trans-Atlantic flying will be conducted along commercial lines". SAM M. HENRY, who had been appointed sheriff a little more than a year before, announced he would run for office in 1932 elections. He was appointed to fill out the term of N. LEONARD BENNETT, who died. Spartanburg High School presented its annual 'Gymnastic Circus' with over 100 performers. Coach H.R. DOBSON was in charge. Organization of new club, the P.G. Club, was noted. New members must have eaten at least 12 hotdogs at a single sitting to qualify. PAT GARNETT, who ate 15, gave the club its name became its president. HORACE ABERNATHY, whose score was 14, was made vice-president. Other officers were SIMPSON HYATT, with 13 to his credit and LLOYD CANTRELL, both of whom ate 13. According to the by-laws, anyone who could score higher would replace the officers. ----------------- May 11, 1952. OLD LANDRUM HOME BEING TORN DOWN AFTER 75 YEARS OF USE Landrum - One of Plantation and lived with his son the oldest landmarks in Landrum is being razed to make way for the new supermarket which will be erected soon by LITTLEJOHN and SMITH of Community Cash Stores, Inc. The old residence, built by the REV. JOHN G. LANDRUM for whom the town was named, is being torn down. It was erected in 1876 about the time the railroad was built from Spartanburg to Asheville. Today the structure, oldest building in Landrum, stands near the Southern Railway. The railway was known then as Richmond and Danville Railroad. The house was occupied by MR. LANDRUM till his death in 1882. He moved there from the Pacolet River Plantation and lived with his son FURMAN and his family. In the old building was reared 4 children and 3 grandchildren, the latter sons and daughters of J.G. LANDRUM of Commercial National Bank. To make way for encroaching business houses and shops, the house and surrounding lots were sold in 1920. All the lumber for the house was sawed at the sawmill a few hundred yards from the building and all weatherboarding, flooring and other parts were hand-dressed. The contractor engaged in tearing down the building said you rarely find such good lumber in sills and joists, floors and ceiling as is found in this old structure. Other businesses on the property are Landrum Drug Co., Arthur Belue's Grocery and The T.W. Petty Mortuary. ---------------
Nov. 23, 1892. - MRS. MARGARET J. MOORE died Thursday Nov.17, 1892 and was buried Friday afternoon in the old cemetery. From her girlhood up she was remarkable for consistency of character and purity of life. She was devoted in her attention to and care of her parents while they lived. For many years she was a teacher in the Sunday School and her seat in church was never vacant, if she was able to attend. Her many virtues are a rich legacy to relatives and friends, if they will only imitate her. - W.P. IRWIN went out to Nashville last week to attend a Jersey sale, thinking that he would buy one or two. He found the prices too high. Little calves, not much bigger than a rabbit sold for $40. up. Cows were all the way from $100. to $200. That shows that the 'mild-eyed Jersey' is still in demand and always will be while men fancy, the beautiful and useful combined. - Aunt LIN', who has been living in MR. GEO. COFFIELDS back yard for many years quietly passed away Sunday afternoon. She was 75 to 80 years old. In the old days she belonged to LEM FERNANDES, of Limestone Springs and for many years was the attendant of his wife, " Aunt Sallie". She has had the kindest attention and best care from MR. COFIELD'S family. - The Methodist preachers of the city and county have gone to Charleston to attend conference. Messrs. JNO. N. CARLISLE, J.K. JENNINGS and W.K. BLAKE will also attend. ------ November 6, 1892 SAM SWITZER killed his brother-in-law JOHN CHEEK in Laurens county about 7 miles from Woodruff Monday. They had a quarrel and fight and it is said that CHEEK was going into his house for a gun when SWITZER knocked him down with a brick and then struck him in the head with a hatchet. CHEEK died Tuesday morning. ------ Febuary 8, 1893 MISS SALLIE TUCK, sister of CAPTAIN J.W. TUCK, died at her home Monday Feb. 6, 1893. She had been sick with pneumonia about one week. She was a pious and consistent member of Bethel church for years and was entirely resigned to death. Her Christian faith upheld her during her great suffering and while crossing the dark valley. She was about 66 years old and was buried Tuesday at the family burial ground. - The Gaffney vicinity is noted for people who live to be very old. We believe that a circle described with an eight mile radius with Gaffney as a center would sweep in more very old people than any other section of the county. - J.H. SLOAN bought 900 bales of cotton from one man in Athens, Ga., last week. He is having it compressed for shipment. - All hands who wish to hire by day should report to W.A. PARKS. - Thanksgiving turkeys came in with a rush last week. They sold at 50 cents up to $2. for gobblers weighing 20 to 25 pounds. Chickens brought 15 to 20 cents. --------- nancie o. - share, don't sell.
Nov. 23, 1892. FROM GRASSY POND MR. EDITOR- I kindly ask you for space for a few happenings around and about Grassy Pond. Providence has given the farmers corn in abundance, cotton a plenty. Corn is selling from 40 to 50 cents. A nine months school opened up at the Grassy Pond school-house this morning. PROF. DAGNALL is principal. MR. DAGNALL has our best wishes, and we hope he will conduct a good school and command the esteem of his many patrons. A great deal of sickness prevails in our neighborhood now. MR. A.J. McCRAW has been suffering very much with rheumatism. DR. JNO. WOOD and MRS. JNO. JONES have been very sick with fever and their recovery is not as yet very promising. MR. J.Q. LITTLE has been improving a farm on the Cherokee Creek, better known as the P.O. LEMMONS farm. He has ditched out the bottom land, thus rendering about 20 acres of very fine bottom fit for cultivation. We find MR. LITTLE is an industrious man, one who is not afraid of manual labor, and also one who is indeed, very kind to his tenants. Week before last , a large cur dog arrived at the P.P. GOFORTH Mills and at once began to display hydrophobic capers. The miller ran out and began to pelt it with rocks, but to no avail. The dog pushed him until he had to run, and then in turned on MR. AB McCRAW and he just barely escaped being bit. Several shots were discharged but MR. A. McCRAW, the noted marksman, with his muzzle-loading rifle had to kill it at last. REV. C.M. TEAL is the pastor at the Grassy Pond Baptist Church. He is an excellent preacher and is esteemed by all of his folks. ------------ November 16, 1892. MRS. ELIZABETH WILLIS, widow of DAVID WILLIS died the morning of Nov. 9, 1892. She was about 79 years old and her maiden name was CLEMENT. During her last years she had the kind ministrations of her daughter, MRS. EMILY CUDD. - MR. J.N. HOLCOMBE brought in a potato to this office Saturday that is about as long as Cleveland's victory is big. It was the red variety and measured 31 inches with a portion of one end broken off. One to three inches were gone. ------------ Feb. 8, 1892. MR. THOMAS M. WOOD, who lived in Cleveland County, N.C., died January 25. He lacked only a few days of being 75 years old. He was the father of W.C.S. WOOD, near Grassy Pond. He was an excellent citizen and served his day and generation faithfully. - We are sorry to state that MR. J.W. DANIEL, Sr. of Thickety was taken sick on the street Monday with pains in his breast, was carried to DR. DANIELS office and telephoned for DR. HEINITSH and being absent on another call other medical aid relieved him in about three hours. He is now at his brother A.C. DANIEL'S in the city, thinks he will be able to return to Thickety tomorrow. When at home with loving wife and family attention and rest, he will be able for work in a few days. - When the ground hog came out last Wednesday and saw the bright sunshine, according to tradition , he hastened back to his winter quarters to remain for a month, Sunday and Monday's freeze indicated that the ground hog knows a thing or two about the weather. ------------ Nov. 23, 1892 ZENO MARTIN one of G.H. CAMP'S constables went to arrest a negro by the name of GIST last week. GIST took MARTIN'S pistol away from him and shot him in the hand and then left. - JONES W. BUSH, near Campton, lost his barn, a milk cow and a buggy by fire Saturday night. He does not know how the fire was started. MR. BUSH has been very sick for several weeks past and is just now recovering slowly. His troubles come together. ------------- nancie o. - { hope I'm not repeating many of the articles}.
