    2. I was born and raised at Beaumont and remember Mary Leigh who of course was quite a bit older than me. I worked a few years in Beaumont Mill in my late teens and am familiar with the duck yarn. Yes, Beaumont can be very proud of Miss Leigh. **************Start the year off right. 1. [SCSPARTA] Slave Genealogy Research: M.B. Smith, Cedar Springs?
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: toniheadr Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.southcarolina.counties.spartanburg/5381/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, I am writing from the USF Africana Heritage Project, seeking help in identifying M.B. Smith of Cedar Springs. We are working on groundbreaking slave genealogy research on behalf of the Magnolia Plantation Foundation in Charleston, SC, to reconstruct family lineages of enslaved people on Drayton family plantations. We are researching Adam Frost, who was first owned by the Drayton family in Charleston, sold to Dr. Frost of Charleston, and lived on the farm of M.B. Smith after the Civil War. His obituary, dated May 17, 1907, appeared in the Charlotte Observer and states that the Frost family came to Spartanburg County as refugees in the Civil War and settled at Cedar Springs. After the war they returned to Charleston but Adam Frost stayed in Spartanburg County. He died in May of 1917, at his home near Cedar Springs on the farm of M.B. Smith, where he had lived for 20 years. The 1880 census shows an Adam Frost living next to Sanford Smith in the Pacolett township. Could Sanford Smith be related to M.B. Smith? We would so appreciate any leads or details you might share if this information sounds familiar. The USF Africana Heritage Project is an all-volunteer research project and website sponsored by the Africana Studies department at the University of South Florida. You can read about our Drayton family research at this URL: http://www.africanaheritage.com/Lowcountry_Africana.asp Many Thanks! 3. Hi Judy: So many people like to read the posts on the bulletin board so when the technology became available to gateway the posts to the mailing list, I accepted. It does get confusing I agree! There is a little "message" at the top of the post that tells you the message is gatewayed and gives the hyperlink in bright blue so you can click on it to view the post. You will be prompted for a username and password when you try to reply to the post. The system doesn't allow duplicate usernames so it might take a couple of tries to find one that hasn't been taken. When you get your username and password established, be sure to write it down because it is yours to keep and you will want it if you decide to post again. I copied and pasted the original message for you. If you will notice, the bright blue hyperlink for the post is there. If you click on it you will be taken to the post. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.
