    3. One of my primary lines is the Browns in Spartanburg & Laurens Counties; however, it is hard as the dickens to find where and to whom they all belonged. I work on them 24/7 without getting very far, it seems. Will be glad to share anything that I have. The Jesse Brown that you mentioned, is he the Jesse Brown son of Roger Brown (whose will was probated in Laurens County)? I think this Jesse Brown had a daughter by the name of Lavina, but I have no idea who she married. These folks were in Spartanburg and Laurens county in the early 1800's. Gloria -----Original Message----- From: SBrockBooker@aol.com [mailto:SBrockBooker@aol.com] Sent: Saturday, January 04, 2003 9:48 PM To: SCSPARTA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SCSPARTA] John Jesse Brown I am trying to find out who John Jesse Brown was married to. My original info has his wife as Nancy Lanford, widow of Samuel Buise. Now according to what one researcher has come up with he was married three times--1) Nancy Lanford 2) Nancy Buice 3) Nancy Patterson. Did John Jesse Brown have a daughter, Lavinia who married James Monroe Rhodes? James Rhodes was supposedly killed in 1864 by Bill Brown in retaliation for the way James Rhodes treated Bill's stepsister who was James' wife. This is not my line but I am trying to help a friend straighten out his line. Any info on any of these people would be greatly appreciated. Another tidbit of info about James Monroe from my dad follows: "He was killed by William Brown, supposedly the brother of his wife, Lavinia, with a singletree or singletree bit. William Brown escaped to VA but was later cleared of murder charges by Lavinia Brown Rhodes." I am also interested in updating my list of children by Benjamin Freeman Rhodes and Mary Ann Crow. Thanks, Ken Rhodes My note: Nancy Lanford could not have been a second wife if Lavinia Brown Rhodes testified for her brother who had already killed him. I do not believe there was a Nancy Lanford that married James Rhodes. I think they mean Lavinia Brown was the d/o Nancy Lanford and John Jesse Brown. I would love some input from someone in the know.

    3. 1935 COTTON BALE, RETAINED AS RELIC Laurens, Sept. 17.- Cotton must have been king to HENRY THOMPSON, Cross Hill planter for he thought so much of one bale of cotton , he refused to sell it in 1863 and today it is unsold. The bale now is in possession of HALL FLEMING of Ora, a grandson, though it weighs a bit less than the original 454 pounds because of souvenir hunters have plucked tufts of the fleece now in a bonded warehouse. THOMPSON, a slave owner, ginned the bale on a horsepower outfit and wrapped it in cloth bound by ropes. Thirty years ago it was rebaled with jute and steel ties to preserve it. Cotton has gone as high as 43 cents a pound- just after the war and just after the civil war was selling for 40 cents but the bale , handed down through the family is being preserved as a relic. ----- DEATHS AND FUNERALS Campobello, Sept. 14.- MRS. 3. Ann and All; This is a very controversial signature, don't you think? As A Christian WAC Veteran, I feel Mr. John Ashcroft should never have said that. God send his Son to die for us as an example as what we as Christians should live our lives as Christians plus remove the need of human sacrifice So many forget that the Sun/Son He/she was God He/She in the flesh. This isn't a religious war,or is it? Who can sends our sons and daughters into combat if it isn't the Will of Our God? Our daughters are now involved as combat soldiers, and We all are obligated to defend our God ,country , and our families. Sorry, but, couldn't pass this up, believe it shouldn't be a signature on a Genealogy mailing list, as seen, can cause controverse Happy New Year! Blessings,Do As You Will but Harm Ye None! 3. You must be in error, because that is a marriage announcement by the parents or the couple themselves. I do believe that the spelling of the groom's surname is missing an "i" or an "y"; believe it should be BRYANT or BRIANT., instead of BRANT. I believe I would check my marriage records again as well as the census. This lady could have been married twice , once to Daniel Bryant and secondly to Homer Harrison. blessings; Evelyne Crocker Crocker and Briant (Bryant) Descendant, Historican and Researcher. > In a message dated 01/01/2003 11:32:33 AM Eastern Standard Time, > NosDrayton@aol.com writes: > > >> BRANT- STEVENS >> DANIEL BRANT and MISS ESSIE STEVENS , both of Glenn Springs >> section , >> were married yesterday afternoon by Magistrate J. 3. Yes! Nancy, I am sure that the CROCER should have been spelled "CROCKER", The "CROCKER" name has been misspelled so many times, if you look on the 1790 S. C. Census you will see that his brother, SOLLOMON surname is spelled as Croaker, Antohny's was spelled Croker as was my great grand father Miles in Ms.was CROKER. I have found the surname spelled the following , french sp. CRE'VECOEUR; CRAKER, CRAWCOUR, CRE(E)GOR, CRECKER, CROKER, CROAKER, LE CROCHERE AS WELL as our present Americanize CROCKER. But, let me assure you it is not COKER, that is another surname taken from the castle "Coker" in Somerset England, another of my lines on my mother's side. It according to what nationality and language, the writer is as to how our name is spelled, I believe CROCER is a typo but sound the "C" and you will hear "CROC(K)ER". Yes, most definatly , this is our ANTHONY CROCKER brothe rof SOLLOMON who fought together in the BATTLE OF COW PENS...
