    2. 1913 { much is not readable but I think are important articles, so I'll do the best I can}. MEXICAN VETERAN IN FINAL REUNION Henry Easler , 88, Served Also In Confederate Army Jan.30- HENRY CALVIN EASLER, Sptbg.Co. veteran of the Mexican War and veteran of the Civil War has answered the call for the final reunion. The old soldier died yesterday at his home near Cherokee Spring after an illness extending over two months. Up until that time, though feeble by the weight of many years he fought the grim reaper into four score years and eight. The funeral services were held today at Mount Pleasant Bapt. church, by Rev. W.P. SMITH. The deceased was one of the best known among the surviving members of the Confederate gray and his death has caused gloom to fall upon the new rank and file. MR. EASLER distinguished himself in two wars by his heroic valor. He received a head wound in the siege on Mexico City. He carried the ball which pentrated his body to his death. He was twice married, his first wife being MRS. JANE CANTRELL, who died about 40 years ago. His second wife was MISS LILLIE{ ?Dilie} SPROUSE. The deceased was born near Cherokee, Feb.13, 1825 , almost 88 years. Besides his wife, he is survived by 3 children; GEORGE W., Cherokee Springs, and MRS. EMILE TATE, Cherokee Springs and MRS. NANCY ELRIDGE, of Drayton Mills. MR. EASLER drew a pension from the government because of his service in the Mexican War. ----- January 20.- The funeral of FRANK C, FOWLER who was found dead in bed at his Charles street home on Friday was held this afternoon at Oakwood cemetery, conducted by the rector of the Church of the Advent. MRS. FOWLER and her daughter arrived in the city early on Sunday morning from Boston, where they received the sad news announcing MR. FOWLER'S sudden demise. ----- January 20.- RUBIE LOUISE GLOVER, aged 27 months died at the home of her parents, MR. and MRS. P.T. GLOVER, near Whitney after a short illness. The funeral was held at Liberty church, conducted by REV. E.L. ARCHER. ----- BRUTAL ASSASSINATION OF JONESVILLE FARMER Feb. 1- Following the brutal murder of ROBERT R. COLEMAN, a farmer aged nearly 80 years at Jonesville, last night. A large crowd OF MEN FROM THE SURROUNDING COUNTY GATHERED AT THE LITTLE STATION THIS MORNING BENT ON AVENGING THE SHOOTER OF ' Uncle Bob', if the would be assassin is caught. MR. COLEMAN was shot in a manner similar to the way in which E.D. SMOAK was killed at Cedar Springs several weeks ago. Last night he was in his little cottage alone when an unknown man crept up to ---shutters, fired a shot with a shotgun..the load took the top of his head. His grandchildren returning and finding his body , spread the alarm. J.C. ROBBINS, who is connected with the state penitentiary and who owns the blood hounds, left Columbia this morning arriving at Jonesville. The dogs were put on the trail... it is stated that 'Uncle Bob' had never known to have an enemy in the world. He together with his wife with some grandchildren, kept the little house alone. He was universally popular. This is the third killing in this section. First, MR. SMOAK , then J.A. EDGE was killed at Herberts. No arrest has been made in either of those cases. ----- January 31.- AGED LADY SERIOUSLY BURNED MRS. BETSY McABEE, w/o JAMES McABEE, who resides near Stone Station, was fatally burned yesterday . She was passing to and fro in front of the fireplace when her clothing caught fire and only the work of her husband saved her from instant death. He was severly burned in his attempt to extinguished the flames. DR. LANCASTER, states that the burns are likely prove fatal. ----- Free post- nancie

    3. 1914 OLD SPARTANBURG MAN WRITES INTERESTINGLY OF OLD DAYS A real son of Spartanburg county, who now lives in Haskell, Texas, recently saw in the 'Sovereign Vistor', the official publication of the Woodmen of the World order, the picture of J.J. BURNETT, judge of probate court of Sptbg. Co. Immediately the fraternal spirit, received a letter from the former South Carolian. The letter is filled with what he terms, " the best place in the world". G.J. MILLER, for such is the gentleman's name, was born Feb.20, 1841, at Bivings factory near what is now Reidville. The writer says he attened church at Nazareth. Members of his family are buried there in the Nazareth graveyard and still others are buried at Green Pond church, a few miles to the southeast of Nazareth. MR. MILLER remembers the names of several of the people of that section namely the BURNETT'S, LEONARDS, ARNOLDS and others. He says he recalls JERRY BURNETT, long since dead. One son of this family, says the writer, moved and settled at Adairsville, Georgia, and one of the daughters, he thinks , lives near Reidville yet. Her name is DYER, he says, and futher that she is worth probably $75,000. He also remembers JOE NESBITT, he had two boys, ISAAC and HARPER. MR. MILLER says he now lives in a section of the country where it doesn't take guano to produce crops... MR. MILLER wants to know how many cotton mills there are in the county now. When he left there were three and of very limited capacity. The writer knows the experience of war and he agrees with Sherman in that statement that " War is h-". He says he fought in the civil war under ROBERT E.LEE and STONEWALL JACKSON. He was engaged in several battles in Virginia, Maryland and in one in N.C. Although in his ripe age, he keeps in touch with the gentle slang of the day. In concluded this letter to judge Burnett, MR. MILLER says he will "ring off". Spartanburg had 1,000 people when he left for Texas. Now she boasts of more than twenty times that number. ----- { I'm sure someone can tell us more about MR. G.J. Miller:} Free post- nancie --- Nancie O'Sullivan --- drayton5@earthlink.net --- EarthLink: It's your Internet.

    1. [SCSPARTA] Alberry Cleveland Cannon
    2. Alberry Cleveland Cannon of Spartanburg was married to Carrie Fitzgerald. He was a successful ice merchant, and early Water Commissioner of Spartanburg, and member of Central Methodist Church. Alberry Cleveland and Carrie Fitzgerald Cannon had two sons, (maybe more) 1) Alberry Pearl Cannon, born 10.16.1882 in Spartanburg, who married Mary Ella "Mada" Cowart, called "Dolly" daughter of Martin Calvin Cowart and Mary Pemlia Barnett of Flat Rock, NC also 2) Chalmers L. Cannon (no more info) Alberry and Chalmers moved to Greenville SC. Alberry was a supervisor with the Southern Railway and later went into business with his brother , Chalmers in the Cannon Brother Co, which later was Cannon Wholesale Co on River Street in Greenville, SC. Members of Buncombe St United Methodist Church in Greenville. If anyone has information on Alberry Cleveland and Carrie Fitzgerald Cannon, dates of birth and or death, and WHERE THEY ARE BURIED in Spartanburg, I would appreciate hearing from you. Maybe someone could do a cemetery look up. Thank you Mary Frances Garrison Roberts

    2. 1914 Glenn Springs, April 2.- REV. W.J. ROACH has resigned as principal of the Glenn Springs graded school, and MRS. R.H. SMITH has been appointed his stead. - The Glenn Springs Presbyterian church has launched a new and much needed institution. It has opened in charge of its pastor, REV. W.J. ROACH a home for motherless children, where fathers can send their children and have them educated and well taken care of at small cost. It is often perplexing for a father to decide what to do with his children. Since none of the orphanages of this state will take a child whose father is still living. To such fathers this home commends itself. " The ROACH HOME" for motherless children, while under the control of the Presbyterian church, it is not a denominational home, but a Christian home for all denominations. Glenn Springs is an ideal location and all conditions are ideal for such a home. This home will care for children 12 months of the year. The cost will be $12.50 per month for each child, which will include everything except clothing. - MISS BETTY YOUNG and son, CHARLEY have moved into the Hunter house. - MR. SHAW of Richmond, Va. is the guest of his son JAMES SHAW, at Wirobe Hall. ----- Pauline April 2.- We are sorry to report that CHARLIE, the little son of MR. M.K. 3. I've been trying to help with Gus Lee, here's what we've discovered so far -- I looked in the 1880 census and found a Guss Lee born 1875 living with divorced father Wilber. But this family was black and we're looking for white folks -- So Denise sent me this additional info: "A lady at genforum sent me info one time about a Jimison Lee who was trying to get his son from his father-in-law in 1875. He had stated that he and his wife (Laura Wyatt Lee) daughter of Dixon Lee had been separated since 1871 and that his son was 5 years old. I haven't been able to find Laura yet, to find out if this was him or not. I found a Dickson Wyatt but that didn't tell me much. I haven't found a Jimison" I then found this family: 1880 Census Place: Fair Forest, Spartanburg, South Carolina Source: FHL Film 1255240 National Archives Film T9-1240 Page 199A Relation Sex Marr Race Age Birthplace John B. 1. [SCSPARTA] found yet still lost-lee
    2. I have found my great grandfather in the 1900,1910,1920,1930 SC Census records but still don't know his parents names. He was already married for one year in 1900. Vital records in Spartanburg, SC can't find his death certificate. DHEC can't find his death certificate. His name was Clarence Augustus "Gus" Lee. In 1900 he was in Spartanburg Co., Spartanburg Twp. In 1910 he was in same as above. In 1920 he was in Cherokee Co. In 1930 he was in Cherokee Co., Draytonville Twp. All census records state born South Carolina. One census states carpenter, one states farmer, one states none. He was born between 1870 and 1875 depending on what you are looking at. His tombstone at New Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery states born 11 June 1870, Died 8 Dec. 1940. He was married to Emma Zone Lamb daughter of Francis Marion "Frank" Lamb and Emily Mary Ann Martin. He states in census record that he was born 1875. His age in another census record would mean he was born in 1873. Is there anyone out there who can help me? Denise Gosnell Mangel

    3. I don't know who had asked abt TURNERS, but I thought this was very interesting abt Henry Wheeler ATKINSON below as we have a Henry DeWilde ATKINSON of Sumter, SC, who md. Mary PRINGLE, sister to Wm. PRINGLE who was my husband's GGGG-g'father. Henry DeWilde ATKINSON and Mary PRINGLE ATKINSON removed to southern GA where they lived and died after raising a large family. I have a bit more info on them should anyone need it. I am sure these two men must have been related although our Henry D. ATKINSON was born in the late 1700s. God bless, Dolores M. 1. [SCSPARTA] Confederate Soldier Monument
    2. Nancie O'Sullivan
    3. Issue; November , 1907. JONESVILLE, S.C. MONUMENT JOHN HAMES Chapter, U.D.C., was organized August 2, 1901, in the town of Jonesville, S.C. It was named in honor of a gallant soldier of Union District, S.C. Captain Hames was born Oct.23, 1836 near Jonesville. He volunteered in June, 1861 and went to Virginia as an 'independent'. Later , because of impaired health, he returned home. Soon afterwards a company of young men from his county was formed and John Hames was elected its second lieutenant. That company became B of the 18th Regiment , South Carolina Volunteers and was sent to Charleston. On the 6th of May, 1862 at Camp Guerin he was elected captain. The next month they were ordered to Virginia and in the second battle of Manassas, August 30, 1862, Captain Hames and his brother, Sergeant C.A. Hames , were both killed. Their bodies were brought home and rest in Gilead Cemetery, near Jonesville. The chief aim of this Chapter was to erect a monument to the Confederate soldiers of Union District. After nearly 6 years their hopes were realized and on May 17, 1907, a granite shaft 23 feet high and 7 and a half base was unveiled in the town of Jonesville.... -- page 492-93 with photo of John Hames, the Monument and also a photo of Rev. A.A. James, chaplain. 'The Colonel GADBERRY, would not appoint a chaplain but submitted appointment to a vote of the regiment and A.A. James was elected. At the unveiling of the Monument, Rev. A.A. James had the opening prayer.' ----- Free post- nancie --- Nancie O'Sullivan --- drayton5@earthlink.net --- EarthLink: It's your Internet.
