Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EgB.2ACI/2578 Message Board Post: I am trying to find some info on my great grandparents. I have been told that they lived in and are buried in Spartanburg, SC. Their names are Samuel Sanford and Emma Massey Sanford. Samuel is originally from Crabtree, NC. I know nothing about Emma Massey. Maybe her family is from Spartanburg, SC. They were married in Haywood Co, NC on 18 Feb 1881. Samuel was 27 and Emma was 18 at the time of their marriage. I have been told that Emma died when my grandfather was still an infant and the year of her death would have been about 1897/1898. Samuel died when my grandfather was still young, in the early 1900's My grandfather William Crawford Sanford was then returned to Crabtree, NC to be raised by some of Samuel's family that still lived there. ANY information anyone has about these two would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

    2. Nancie O'Sullivan
    3. July, 1929. Article from the 'Confederate Veteran' magazine. MARK D. CHAPMAN was born at Spartanburg, S.C., on March 23, 1845 and died January 7, 1929, in his 84th year. Joining the Confederate army in 1862, when 17 years of age, he served in Company F, 1st South Carolina Artillery, stationed at Fort Sumter, near Charleston, S.C. He joined Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's forces in 1865 and served on scout duty at Columbia. The army was moved from here just before Sherman burned the city. While on picket duty at Bentonville, N.C., he and his companions were captured by Sherman's army and was taken to Mare's Island, N.Y., by boat and held there as a prisoner for 6 months. While there the prisoners underwent many hardships, the worst being hunger. He was returned by boat to Charleston, where he received his discharge from the army with which he had served to the bitter end. ----- Free Post- nancie --- Nancie O'Sullivan --- drayton5@earthlink.net --- EarthLink: It's your Internet.

    1. [SCSPARTA] Jason Greer Confederate Veteran
    2. Nancie O'Sullivan
    3. Article from the 'Confederate Veteran' magazine , dated November, 1929. JASON M. GREER Judge JASON M. GREER, for many years prominent in the political life of Union, S.C., passed away at his home there on June 21, 1929, after an illness of several months. He is survived by two sons and two daughters. His wife, who was MISS NANNIE BYERS, proceded him to the grave many years ago. Jason M. Greer was the youngest of 7 brothers to volunteer for service in the Confederate army. All of the brothers served four years. He was among the 16 year old boys who volunteered from Union County and served with Company B, under Capt. D.A. Townsend, 4th South Carolina Regiment. These boys went in box cars to Augusta, from there to near Savannah, Ga. They were in front of Sherman to Charleston, then to Cheraw, where they guarded 500 Yankee prisoners [ captured by General Hampton], took them to Raleigh, N.C. and there turned them over to the military authorities. The company composed of these boys was sent to Spartanburg to resist the coming of Kilpatrick's raid, but the boys got news that Lee had surrendered and disbanded and came home, where each one later had to give up his beloved gun to the Yankee garrison placed there for a few months. For more than 27 years Judge J.M. GREER served Union County in public and appointed offices. A native of Union County, he was born about 7 miles south of Union, on June 6, 1848. During the early part of his youth, Jason Greer attended school at the Old Male Academy [ which stood where his residence on South Church St. stands] under the tutelage, of Prof. D.A. TOWNSEND. The funeral services were from the Grace Methodist Church, at Union. He was a life long member, a man of deep convictions . For a long lifetime he served his generation faithfully and with honor to himself. ----- Free post- nancie --- Nancie O'Sullivan --- drayton5@earthlink.net --- EarthLink: It's your Internet.
