    1. [SCSPARTA] The Freelance Spartanburg Paper 1904
    2. Nancie - you shamed me into it! I will be posting information contained in parts of a newspaper published for a short period of time in Spartanburg, called THE FREELANCE. These pages were copied by someone else [and graciously shared with me] to extract weddings and deaths for publication in a genealogy quarterly - so I won't be able to post those, but there is a lot of other good information. This paper included a lot of news from surrounding communities - that gives us a little glimpse into the lives of our ancestors. I'll apologize in advance for any spelling/typo errors. "The Freelance" Issue 2-5-1904 Reported Shooting at Enoree A report comes from the Enoree Mill neighborhood that a negro boy is in a very critical condition and not expected to live. The story is that a son of Cunningham HANNA met the boy in the road and informed him that he was going to kill him. He proceeded to put his threat into action by shooting the negro in the arm. The wound was slight and the negro did not seem to care much for it. Meeting him again the next day, HANNA said that he proposed to finish the killing job. He fired on him again, the ball entering the body and the wound being a severe one. No arrests are reported here yet. A Bridge Completed Marsh's Shoals bridge, which was swept away by the Pacolet flood was completed yesterday. E. H. HARRISON had supervision of the work. The bridge is a substantial wooden structure 140 feet long and 18 feet from the water, connecting the Walnut Grove section with Woodruff. Issue: 2-10-1904 D. A. FARR is quite ill at his residence here. C. H. FOSTER was quite sick all last week, but is out again. Grace LITTLEJOHN, who has been home to see her father, J. H. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Edwin BAILEY, Dr. and Mrs. M. A. DRUMMOND, Misses Ellie FEW, Eva GOODLETT, Helen IRWIN, Louie JAMES, Don JAMES and Luther MARCHANT. Joseph J. died March 28, 1916 in Morgan Township, Cherokee Co., SC The information listed on his Death Certificate list his name as John J. Caldwell, born Aug. 21, 1837 in Gaston N.C.. Occupation was shown as farmer. It also shows him as being married? Mother and Father are listed as Don't know. He is buried in the Mountain View Cemetery with just the initials J.J. on the marker. The information was provided by his son William E. Caldwell of Dillon, S.C. The Obit for William E. listed his father as John Josiah and stated he served in the War Between the States and fought for the confederacy. I have not been able to locate any thing on that. On the 1910 census for Morgan Township, Cherokee Co. there is a James J. Caldwell, age 72 with wife Bessie, married 3 years. On the 1920 census she is listed as a widow in the house of Landrum B. Blanton in Limestone Twp. As you can see it is very confusing. Where would I need to go to try and locate a marriage license/application or what ever is available for the marriage in 1907? I presume it was somewhere in that area. If anyone has any information on this family or can be of assistance I would greatly appreciate it. Unfortunately I don't live there, but I do make occasional trips through that area. Tanya C. Rothwell Researching: Caldwell, Gibson, Edwards, Kelly and others from NC and SC
