" The Free Lance" Issue: March 25, 1904 "A spoiled child is almost as bad as one that is too fresh" TRIED TO KILL SPOUSE Annie BOWLER Attempted to Cut Her Husband's Throat Annie BOWLER, a dusky denizen of West Henry Street, remained away from home all last night and this morning at 5 o'clock she climbed through a window into the room where her husband was sleeping and drawing a razor rushed at the gentlemen with the intention of severing his head from his body. James, for that was the unfortunate husband's name, jumped out of bed and placed a chair between his person and that of his irate spouse. Thus protected he backed her up against the wall and held her there impaled on the legs of the chair until he saw a good opportunity to escape when he fled from the house and went to a telephone to summon the police to his aid, leaving Annie and her razor in complete charge of their domicile. Annie began her exploits yesterday afternoon by gravely announcing that she had determined to depart the troublous paths of this world and had inserted into her internals a sufficient quantity of morphine to float her gently away. She lay down on a bed and floated for four hours, while the neighbors flocked to her room to witness the tragic spectacle of the demise of Annie and the melancholy end of love's young dream, for it was on account of domestic troubles and the indifference of her husband that Annie was led to her supposed rash act. James however, continued indifferent and finally Annie further enraged by the failure of her pretended self destruction to move him to sorrow or excitement, got up from the bed and cussed out the whole outfit. The attempted tragedy of this morning was the sequel. A barn and contents on the premises of Geo. S. TURNER at Campobello were totally destroyed by fire about 3 o'clock Sunday morning. The cause of the fire is unknown. ALVIN STEWART IN JAIL Alvin STEWART who lives on Judd McKINNEY's place near Glendale contracted for supplies with a leading merchant of this city and also obtained a buggy from Spartanburg Firm and left the county. He was arrested by Deputy Sheriff HAYES near the North Carolina line yesterday and is now in jail to answer the charge of obtaining goods under false pretenses. ARRESTED FOR STEALING Georgia May CONNELLY, Gertrude STAGGS and Minnie GALES were arrested in Greenville yesterday by Deputy Sheriff BALLENGER charged with stealing $41.20 from Tom MORRIS, colored of this city. Officer S. E. WEST brought them over yesterday and they are now in jail waiting investigation. HEARD AT HEBRON: -Mrs. J. M. WOFFORD has a narrow escape recently from being shot. She was cleaning out an old safe taking out old papers, and fragments and when she got through taking out the papers she picked them up and threw them in the fire place and struck a match to burn them. There was a loaded shell in those fragments and it exploded. She was sitting in front of the fireplace. She said she was covered with powder and smoke and paper and fire. It frightened her very much. "The Free Lance" Issue March 4, 1904. Alleged Rape Near Pacolet A negro named Crip ANDERSON was arrested at Pacolet Monday afternoon and lodged in the county jail in this city charged with rape. The crime is said to have been committed three weeks ago on the person of Mrs. Mary Ann HILL, who is 78 years old. The delay in reporting the crime is claimed to be due to the fact that Mrs. HILL and her daughter, Mrs. Millie LOW, had been terrorized by ANDERSON and were afraid to make his deed public. Wakefield Captured Sheriff GILREATH received a telegram late yesterday from Chief of Police WATSON of Waynesville, N.C. saying that Thomas WAKEFIELD, charged with the murder of James HICKS near the Block House ten days ago, had been captured and lodged in jail says the News. The message also stated that WAKEFIELD's brother, who was implicated by the coroner's jury, would soon be caught as it was known where he was hiding. The facts regarding the killing having been the result of a quarrel which took place in the Block House section where a number of sporting men has assembled to witness an interstate cocking main. HICKS was a native of Union. Escaped From Insane Asylum J. G. WILKINS who escaped from the insane asylum some time ago, reached his daughter's home near Cherokee Sunday. Several other inmates escaped with WILKINS, but they were subsequently captured and taken back. WILKINS, however, was more shrewd than his companions in evading capture and after 10 days walking obscure roads and sleeping in the cold without shelter, he reached his daughter's home broken down and fatigued. His mind however, seems clear at times. He tells a very rational story of the hunger and privation endured on his trip from Columbia to Spartanburg. F. C. WEST, clerk of the county board of commissioners is confined to his room with the mumps. Algie MEREDITH was committed to jail yesterday by Magistrate BRIGGS of Woodruff for larceny of live stock. Boy Accidentally Shot Boyd BAILEY aged 16 years, was shot and seriously hurt at the home of his parents on the farming lands of R. H. BARRY, near Moore yesterday. The shooting was accidental. Boyd and his brother, aged 12 during the absence of their parents from the house, were playing with an old cap and ball pistol. They thought that the weapon was unloaded and while the young lad held it he playfully pointed it at his brother and pulled the trigger. The pistol was discharged and the load took effect in the boy's forehead. Singularly said incident of the affair is that Mr. and Mrs. BAILEY the parents left home Tuesday to attend the funeral of a relative in Gaffney. The house was in the charge of the boys and it was while in this city returning home yesterday that the news was imparted to the parents over the telephone. Drs. WARD and COAN are attending the little sufferer, and thought his condition more favorable this morning. Miss FINCH Hurt by Collision At three o'clock this afternoon a Clifton car ran into a buggy on Magnolia street, upsetting it and throwing to the ground Miss FINCH, its occupant. Miss FINCH was painfully hurt about the face and head and was taken to Heinitsh's drug store, where she was given surgical attention. She is a daughter of Simpson FINCH, who lives near Ardella. [more] Mrs. W. J. WILSON in a Hospital Dr. O.W. LEONARD returned from Baltimore last night where he carried his sister, Mrs. W. J. WILSON of Reidville a few days ago to have an operation for appendicitis. The operation was not performed and he left her in a hospital in Baltimore. Her husband, W. J. WILSON and Dr. D. O. BENNETT of Reidville left today for Baltimore and will perhaps move her to Philadelphia. Free Post Lisa
Hello listers; taking Janet's advice I checked out ther Old map of Spartanburg at the site she gave us. I found a place on there named "ANDERSON'S MILL" . Is anyone familiar with the ANDERSON family that refers to? I'm looking for my 3rd greatgrandfather's family. He was HIRAM KING ANDERSON, son of WILLIAM ANDERSON. As you can imagine, this is like looking for a needle in a haystack! My Hiram was born ca 1787 in SC. Any info on the family connected to ANDERSON'S MILL greatly appreciated! Nancy Noel
Hi Darrell: There is an 1825 Spartanburg map on the Spartanburg web site. It is very large and detailed but doesn't print well. Take a look at it and if you like it I can e-mail a jpg file to you.
