1929 U.D.C. Notes: South Carolina- The Daughters of the South Carolina Division have been instrumental in having the legislature make an increase this year in Confederate pensions. The ranks are thinning fast and the remaining few deserve this increase. A special appropriation of $100. to clean the statue of Gen. Wade Hampton, on the capitol grounds, was also secured by the Daughters, the need of this having been brought before the State convention at Columbia in December and the legislature petitioned accordingly. The birthday of Robert El. LEE was fittingly observed at the Confederate Ho0me, Columbia, where there are 58 veterans and 16 Girls of the Sixties, the program being arranged by the Central Committee. "TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT" <http://genforum.genealogy.com/mcentire/messages/237.html> Re: Zach McEntire, Polk Co, NC>Fannin Co, TX Posted by: Christyn Burkham Date: June 15, 2001 at 12:30:10 In Reply to: Re: Zach McEntire, Polk Co, NC>Fannin Co, TX by Teresa of 405 Thanks, Teresa. New updates on my research have found that Zach is indeed the son of Aaron and Susannah McEntire. And, it looks like his wife is Myra Crocker, not Crockett. She had 5 children before marrying Zach. Myra, in 1870, was a domestic servant for Susan McEntire, Zach's mother in Rutherford County, North Carolina. Zach and Myra married sometime between 1880 and 1885. Then, they moved to Spartanburg County, South Carolina. Later, they moved to Fannin County, Texas. Zach died there in 1905 and Myra died there in 1923. I still don't know if Crocker was a maiden or married name or who the father of Myra's first 5 (of 10) children were. Any information from the McEntire clan would be appreciated. This is for those seeking more information on Minerva Croker aka Crocker who may be found on the 1850, 1860 and 1870 S. C. census. 1850 census:Spartanburg Co. She is living next to James & Rebecca Conch who is living in next Household to James CROKER aka CROCKER, Here is the census: H.H. 1557: Minerva CROKER, age 32; Female; S. C. (It does not state her status of widow or unmarried). Sarah " , age 5 ; F. Mila " , age 2; F. Jason " , age 1/4,M. H. H. 1558; James CONCH , age: 49, Farmer; S. C. Rebecca (I believe this is Minerva Croker aka Crocker's sister and the daughter of James CROKER AKA CROCKER) age: 46, F. Leecel Conch age; 20, m. Silron " age: 18, m. Martha " age: 16, f. Charlotta " age: 14, f. Ezikel CONCH age: 12, m. Ehsa " , age: 10, f. Simeon CONCH, age: 8, m. Kerry " , age: 6, m. William CONCH, age: 37, m. H. H. 1559 - 1559: JAMES CROKER; age: 60,- m.: Farmer, S. C. Nancy " ; age: 23: f. (I believe she is a daughter) John " : age: 22: m. Farmer: D. A. Croker: age: 18; f. Nicey " age: 12, f. Alexander CROKER: age 6, m. Luncida RUSH : age: 28, (I believe a widowed daughter) Now, notice in the 1860 S. C. Census, Martinville P.O. ; her name is spelled CROCKER, and JAMES CROCKER'S youngest son, ALEXANDER CROCKER is living with her as a day laborer, he is not a negro....as Helen wrote me...he is her youngest BROTHER... and the JAMES CONCH's are still nearby...in H. H. 579 and Minerva CROKER AKA CROCKER , age 38 (oops, she forgot her age should be 42.) is H. H. # 595: Washerwoman Her daughter , SARAH is now called MINNIE CROCKER: age, 15, f. MILA is now spelled MYRA CROCKER; age: 13,(bn. 1845) f. Jason is no longer in the home, he would have been age 11: She has two younger daughters: Elizabeth age: 6, f. Ann ; age 3, f. I fully believe this woman Minerva CROKER AKA CROCKER had her children out of wedlock...... 1870 S. C. census find her in the Spartanburg Co. twp. of CHEROKEE; LIVING ALONE: H. H. 275; CROCKER, MINERVA; age: 50 (opps: forgot she was 52), f. Keeping House. Series : M. 593- Roll: 1508 pg. 398 So, my conclusion is MINERVA CROKER aka CROCKER was the daughter of JAMES CROCKER bn. 1790 in Spartanburg Co. S. C. whose wife is presently unknown...and parents maybe one of Arthur and Maryan CROCKER'S descendants... Mila or Myra was bn. in S. C. not N. C. as her McEntire descendants seem to think... there is a MINNIE in the Henry C. CROCKER family but she was born after MINERVA'S SARAH MINNIE CROCKER, IN 1880'S... Hi Sally and Leigh I find the queries regarding Cartee/Carter to be quite interesting. In my Civil War data base for Spartanburg district, I have a Ransom Cartee who served in 13th SC Infantry, co. E. Don't have an enlistment or muster out date. In fact, have no further data about him. In MS there was a Ransom Carter who served in the 26th MS Inf. Cos. E/I. According to the NPS CW SSS there were no Cartees to serve in MS. Seems reasonable that he may have been in the 13th SC in the first year of the war. He probably did not reenlist in April 1862, but went to MS where he enlisted in the 26th MS. The following is a brief history of the 26 MS Inf taken from the NPS web site. There is little doubt that this Ransom was from Prentiss, MS, which seems to pins him down to the person in question. 26th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry 26th Infantry Regiment was organized during the summer of 1861 at Iuka, Mississippi. Many of the men were from Prentiss, Itawamba, Tishomingo, Perry, and De Soto counties. The regiment moved to Tennessee and was one of the units captured at Fort Donelson. In this fight it lost 12 killed and 69 wounded of the 39 officers and 404 men engaged. After being exchanged, it was assigned to General Tilghman's and J. Adams' Brigade, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. The unit reported 7 casualties at Coffeeville, totalled 420 effectives in April, 1863, and lost 2 killed, 5 wounded, and 10 missing at Champion's Hill. In February, 1864, it was ordered to Virginia and placed in J.R. Davis' Brigade. It fought at Cold Harbor, endured the battles and hardships of the Petersburg trenches, and ended the war at Appomattox. Only 4 officers and 8 men surrendered with the Army at Appomattox. Only 4 officers and 8 men surrendered with the Army of Northern Virginia. The field officers were Colonel Arthur E. Reynolds, Lieutenant Colonel F.M. Boone, and Major Tully F. Parker. Maybe he had brothers in Spartanburg to also serve in the 13th SC Inf. John Cartee/Carter (Carter is listed as an alternate name on thee roster) 13th Inf Co. E John was on the 1860 Spartanburg Census. Perry Duncan Cartee/Carter was also in 13th Inf Co E and in April 1862 reenlisted in 5th SC Inf. 2 Co. K. Perry was buried at Cooley Springs Baptist Church. Married to Louisa J. Culbreath. On 60 census and was drawing a pension in 1907. Most references to the spartanburg Cartees also refer to them as Carters. Hope this may clear up some of the confusion instead of adding more. Let me know what you think of the above. My great-grandfather definitely went by Ransom CARTER. I found Ransom in both the 1850 and 1860 Spartanburg census - To me the 1850 is spelled Carter. I believe the 1860 does also - however, the print out that I have is sorta small - could be Cartee. On all family data that I can find on the web Ransom is not listed as a child even though he his shown on both census records. Ransom went on to Prentiss Co., MS sometime between 1860 and 1863 since he was in the Civil War from that part of MS. In 1873 he married (in Prentiss Co., MS) Roxanna Elizabeth Tucker. After a few years they went on to Hunt and Fannin Countie in Texas .Do you know if there was ever a probate of Caleb Cartee's estate. Perhaps Ransom was mentioned and where he lived. If you live in Spartanburg perhaps you would know where I could look up that information. Thanks for replying so soon. > Sally Pohl > spohl1@centurytel.net

Hi Judy I am sure you can help with the Evans. In my records I have 2 Oliver Evans. One was in the Holcombe Legion, Co. A and died of disease, 3/20/63 at Wilmington, NC. Broken Fortunes says he was age 18 and from Spartanburg. The second Oliver Evans was probably from Greenville. He was in the 16th Inf. Co. C and was KIA at Franklin, TN, 11/30/64, according to Broken Fortunes. There was a Oliver Evans in the 9th SC Inf, Co. E/I who survived. This is probably one of the other Olivers. The 9th Inf. was disbanded in April 1862 when the Confederate Army was reorganized. According to the death dates he could have been either of them. I have not shown this Oliver in my records. I show below the other Evans that I believe were from Spartanburg. Of the 6 men shown, 4 of them died and the other 2 were discharged for disability, but John Hamilton later joined the 5th Reserves. Isaac seems to be the only one that escaped a crippling condition. That is probably because I just don't have the record to show it. I have very little data beyond what is shown. John H. was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Spartanburg, but I don't know when. He was married to Harriett D. Choice. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: CARTER/CARTEE Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EgB.2ACI/2595 Message Board Post: I am looking for any information on CALEB CARTER (or Cartee - may have changed name to Carter). He was in 1850 and 1860 Spartanburg Co. census. Both census show a son by the name of RANSOM CARTER, my great-grandfather. Does anybody know for sure if James Cartee changed his name to Carter or were the Carter and Cartee families seperate. All help will be appreciated.
Recommended reading for those interested in the issue of slavery: "They Were White and They Were Slaves The Untold History of the Enslavement of Whites in Early America" compiled by Michael A. Hoffman II, ISBN 0-929903-05-6 . A well documented commentary, often documented from paragraph to paragraph. Excerpt from the book review " the slave trade in WHITES, hundreds of thousands of whom were kidnapped, chained, whipped, and worked to death in the American colonies." I am a descendant of "indentured servants" who became citizens of Spartanburg County, SC eventually, thus my interest in this publication. Mr. Hoffman does not gloss over the defination of 'indentured servant." Shirley Wagstaff, a southern transplant to Bandon, Oregon
